So id like a couple general tips

1. What is the best government to get into after despotism? (i know there is a huge debate over this...)

2. How many cities should i build? (roughly) and how far apart do i space them?

3. How do i get gold? (mines, tax collectors, trade?) How do tax collectors work?

4. What should i research in the middle ages (i feel comfortable w/ research early, but not later?)

5. On a related note, how should i go about deciding what to research? What paths can/should i take

6. Any other tips that will help a new player...

Anyway, thanks for the help guys. HELP!

Ok, so im new to the game and i need some help. I get to the point where i have 10-12 cities and a strong military. When i get to the middle ages and switch to monarchy i suddenly am poor.

My treasury is depleted, i have to turn research and happiness to 10% each just to break even with the treasury. I have an ungodly amount of mines built all over, but for some reason im still poor. I worked a little with tax collectors, but i dont know how to raise money other than mines.

Before i turn poor, i just own both militarily and culturally. Suddenly i lose my treasury and my citizens start to starve...what's wrong?

Also, on a semi-related note, ive built libraries, aquaducts, courthouses, temples, etc. in many of my non-capital cities. Is this necessary? Culturally its great, but what should i do with my border cities?

Thanks for the help. They(of course) spawned on this continent far away from me, and ate up the Japanese and Celts. So they are the giant pink blob on the other side of the map. They have only a couple of unimportant late middle age techs on me, and we are both in the industrial age without any industrial age techs yet. So they decided that they'd just come and land a crap load of knights and pikemen in the middle of my northern territories. I missed the landing, so I didn't prepare, and they killed the archers I had defending those two cities. My ENTIRE army is on the other continent messing up the Zulu, so I'll have to use only newly built knights.
This is highly irritating, and I don't even know if I'll continue. Blah! I'm sure I could defeat their landing forces, I just really, really don't feel like doing it-and then having to rebuild all the auto-destroyed buildings.
Civ 3 AI is so peculiar in its actions. Normally it is so unable to land any force of consequence, and then it comes and does this!
Screenshot:

Civ III Complete

Well.. my son.. the future Civ player.. decided to run off with my disc. ANY BUGS OR PROBLEMS, PLEASE TELL ME, I'm already working on the 1.6 patch, and i plan to go to 1.9 then work on something else.
The Scenario is that you can play as either England, France, or one of the 3 nations I edited on a very detailed UK map(with a bit of northern france). The three nations are Scotland, Whales, and Vikings. All the units up until the the Modern age have been customized a bit, some can move further, or not as far, are more expensive or stronger

all the civs can only use certain units. For example. The vikings can't build settlers. They have 4 to begin with, they have to take over enemy cities to expand, but they are the only ones with galley's and they have them available right away, allowing them to get a headstart, but then later, in the middle ages they will be at a disadvantage with less types of units available. Things like that.

To use the map, probably click save, and save it right to your scenerios folder in the Civilization III directory.

Uploading Scenerios and Maps

I love making scenerios and maps with the civIII editor, but i really want to share it, does anyone know somewhere i can upload them at so ppl can download them?

How do you guys handle...

I have a question. I'm a recent convert to the game and yet I seem to be developing my own 'way to win' which I could imagine could make the game quite tedious in the long run, just repeating the same actions again and again.

So I was just wondering... do those of you who have completed hundreds of games vary your strategy from time to time? How often do you prefer to try things like cultural dominance rather than the more simplistic 'kill everybody' approach?

Also, what diificulty level do you play at? So far, I've noticed that the AI just cheats at the hardest levels and makes for a pretty irritating game. Lower levels are just to easy. So what do level play at?

Corruption

Just a quick question..

Lets say I create a new settlement in a far-away location and it becomes a 1shield/1commerce town.

If I were to build loads of mines and railroads around it, how does this affect the level of corruption/waste? I know its a very complicated issue dependent on government type, exact distance from capital, etc (If someone can direct me to the thread which goes through all the maths, it would be much appreciated).

I'm sure it'll take me a while to work it all out, but for the meantime (and for my current game!) ... Imagine a settlement at it's maximum isolation on the largest map - At what point does corruption/waste shift from an absolute value (1shield/1commerce) to a percentage?

Automated Workers

I find that once my civilization becomes too large, I tend to put all my workers on 'automated' setting to prevent the game from slowing down and becoming tedious, since at this stage the actions that workers should do are pretty obvious (clean-up pollution, make a road to the new resource, etc).

The AI seems to handle it pretty well, but one thing that really annnoys me is when automated workers make it their first priority to turn all the mines I have built into irrigation, even when a city has reached its maximum population (for that time).

So my question is: Is there any way to change the prioity of automated workers. In order to gain immediate benefits (wonders especially) producing shields is far more important than increasing population, yet automated workers never seem to realise this. For those of you who don't know, this August marks the 4 year anniversary of the beginning of the CivIII Democracy game here onsite.
I joined 1bc on August 1st of 2002 when I stumbled across this little waystation and discovered the Democracy Game just getting started. The idea facinated me and I joined both the site and game.

One of the members at that time was Olafs, and it's putting it lightly that he had a certain way with words and quite a sense of humor as well. He started the first (as far as I know) Community newspaper.

I recently came across the archive of the paper and thought I would begin posting articles from it every day or so. Perhaps even keep track of the 4 year anniversary of each posting as I do so. Sort of a real time commentary, if you will.

The archive is online. I was chatting with maniacalmonkey the other day and I showed him. I bet we wasted 3 hours howling over different stories. I'll post where it is at a later time, pehaps after we've gotten a few months into the articles. I would post it now, but I want to maintain some sort of chronological order. If you know where the archive is, please keep it to yourself for the time being. :)

One of the funniest parts about the paper were the sidebar headlines that were included. Not stories really, just headlines about what may have been if the paper were a much bigger enterprise. I'll include some of these as well.

The stories had a bit of a roleplaying slant to them, so if any of the newer members have a question about what something means in a story, please ask and I'm sure one of us oldtimers will happen along to help explain.

------------------

Well.. let's get started... The first edition, dated August 9, 2002:

OUR LAKE IS NOT ENOUGH

The quality of the lake-shore is in question, by our Southern neighbours. Questions in our village rise on why the lake, that has been supplying us with water for ages, is not good enough for the people of the community.

Various sources say that the people are now definately looking for a permenant place to settle down. Our lake seems to be the most important topic regarding the choice for a suitable location.

As stories are told, the people seem to have a desire to move closer to the seemlingly attractive watermass in the South.

It appears that many people have an urge to move further away from our huts, to the point where the distance between the lake and this newly discovered southern water is on it's smallest. That way, the new people will have access to both the lake, and the larger watermass. Question remains, why the lake isn't enough for the community.

Also, we can only guess how the leader of our huts, NIBON will respond to the decision of the people to move further away. Preparations for their arrival are already in progress, although it is unlikely the people will move up north to contact our little huttage any time soon.

OS (Friday, August 9, 2002)

NEW PEOPLE APPROACH LAKE

Astonishment all over, as a new roaming tribe was discovered yesterday, by a LAKE reporter.

Never, in the history as we remember it, has a tribe this large emerged so close to our huts.

As tribe leader NIBON said earlier today: "We must prepare our village for the arrival, and call for an immediate meeting of the old and wise men. It appears that this new tribe has the knowledge to grow beyond our imagination. No, I do not exclude the possibility to cooperate, or even to join this new movement."

Our reporter was the first to contact the 'new movement', as our tribe leader eloquently put it. THE LAKE has the first inside information on the new people. Here are some of the astonishing facts that have been discovered so far:

The people call themselves 'The Community'. They're leader is called Sean, although our reporter had no chance to contact him yet.

They conduct a system, on where not one leader makes the decisions, but for every single aspect of the community, a leader is chosen. There's a narrow channel right near my territory that Scandinavia controls. The Iroquois are the most powerful nation, and are running a lot of frigates through that channel. I figured that since they're the most powerful, I may as well knock off a little of their naval power here and there, and at the same time, loosen their control over the area that the frigates are headed to. So I started building privateers and ambushing the Iroquois as they went through the channel.

This is on a game that I have modified slightly, the only thing I've changed is a few unit values. But I've noticed before that just the action of opening the editor messes with the game a little bit. If I don't go back through and fix it, then on edited games, the game will make KT produce something other than Crusaders and Statue of Zeus something other than Ancient Cavalry. It's sometimes been workers and settlers, it's sometimes been Javelin Throwers and other military units.

Well, I'm wondering if something similar is going on with the privateers, because when they enslave, they don't make workers. The Civlopedia isn't specific about privateer enslavement, but Javelin Throwers make workers, so I presumed that privateers would too. Instead, they make Berserks. This is really strange, becuase I'm playing as Korea. I'd post a screenshot of a handful of Berserks standing next to a Hwa'cha, but the print screen key doesn't work for me.

Any insight?

Screenshots

How does one take screenshots? I tried several games, all of which resulted in me popping the CD out of my disk drive. I must have dozens of different games to choose from, and every single one of them looked too boring or old (yea yea, I know, I should be happy to have any at all). But one caught my eye every time I flipped through all of the CD's. That game was Civilization 3.

I first got Civ 3 when I was in elementary shool, in 2001, and I remember the first time I popped it in. I remember seeing the intro video and almost crapping my pants in anticipation. After that, I was a big Civ 3 fan, not that I was any good at it. I played my first game and won a time victory as the Egyptians. I vaguely remember researching corporation in then year 2050(:D, hey, I was a lot younger), and also thinking, "the best time to build a military is when you're done researching every technology so you can put research at 0%." Heh, kinda makes me laugh now.

After about a half a year, I stopped playing the game, I don't remember why at all. Then, at a point in time that I estimate to be around March 2004, I stumbled across http://realmsbeyond.net/civ/index.html. If you are not familiar with this website, it hosts "epics", which value honest gameplay over all. I went to http://sirian.warpcore.org/civ3/greatlibrary.html, where I found many different Civ 3 games, which I promptly read (and in some cases re-read). It was at this point, right after I found realmsbeyond, that my interest in Civ 3 spiked, and I started playing it again.

That year, 2004, I joined this website. Maybe you remember http://www.1bcciv.com/Topic1031346-20-1.aspx, my first thread. (that game in that thread was my first regent victory). After that, I steadily got better, mostly by reading topics here. Oh, and as a side note: This site is awesome! You guys have been great. Looking through all my old posts using the search tool felt so - nostalgic. Skipping ahead a bit, actually into 2005, I won my first emperor game, although I don't remember it at all at the moment (seems I didn't make a thread about it either). I went on to win several emporor games, and paused from Civ 3 during the second half of that summer.

I was really, really, exited for the release of Civ 4 the upcoming October, and it was awhile before I played Civ 3 again. I believe it was September of last year, 2005, that I played my final pre-civ4 game. I chose the Mayans, emperor difficulty, and I remember a HUGE modern age war w/ stealth bombers and modern armor (I also remember listening to the show "Commander in Chief", as I played it because my mom was watching it in the living room). I remember thinking about making a thread about it, but damn it I chose not to. That turned out to be one of, if not the, most fun games of Civ 3 I ever played - and also the highest scoring! A couple weeks after that, Civ 4 was out.

My excitement was brimming, I had been looking forward to it for nearly eight months! Then it arrived, in its awesome leatherette case. Athough I could not play it immediately, due to computer issues, I waited patiently. When I did finally get a chance to play it, several weeks later, I actually wasn't that impressed. I had waited that long, just to be unimpressed! I was flabbergasted! I assumed it was me causing a problem, and tried to force myself to enjoy the game, but it was no use, it just didn't appeal to me. So the game sat there as I bought and played other games, until about 2 months ago.

I was ready to try Civilization 4 again. I played one game, won, and was sick of it. I didn't play again until about 2 weeks ago, where I had a good run with a couple games. That run ended yesterday, I am bored of the game yet again. And now I think I realise that some games just don't work for me, and Civilization 4 is chief among them.

So that brings me to where I was at the end of paragraph one (oooh, that worked nicely with the backtracking and explaining how I got to where I am:cool:) I put in the original, Civ 3 CD, the same one that I put in five years ago. As I watched the intro video, I felt that same exact feeling I felt the first time. It was amazing. That was about an hour ago, and directly after that I wrote this thread (yes, it did take me OVER an hour to write this whole thing). I guess that when I watched that video, I realized that Civ 3 was, and is, the game for me.

question about civ3 PTW!

when i loaded a scenario that had new units advancement and wonders none of it actually showed in the game! like if i build a military academy it looks like a library canoes look like galleys...and when i went to the site it said to add those features on the link wasnt there! where do i go to get these features?

Has anybody ever beaten Civ3 on Deity Mode?

I wonder! According to the description on civ3.com, there is a bit more single player content with PTW, but all of it that they mention is stuff that was already added for me with C3C. But at the same time, in one of the screenshots I've seen of PTW, it looks like the terrain is different:
http://www.civfanatics.com/sotd/sotd101.jpg

The terrain looks like no kind I've seen before in that screenshot, but it may be that person's video card doing that, because it looks like snow but you can see from the map that it's right in the middle of the world, not in a place that would be cold.

Does PTW have any single player content that doesn't come with vanilla or C3C? If so, is it worth it in your opinion?

No Civ4

My fingers start itching when I see all those threads on civ4. I've only turned on mass regicide and capture the princess, but they're on at the same time. Somehow that's affecting the AI players: Some of them build their civilizations like normal, but about half just don't expand. They build no cities at all other than their capital. I investigate their capitals and see in the garrison section that all seven of their kings are still alive, and their princess is still there too. I've set up at least three games like this, and this has happened in all three of them.

Does anyone have an explanation for this? Is it related to one or the other of the short game modes, or maybe both? Is it just some glitch, or is there a good reason for it?

I'm also running this on a mod I made myself, but I didn't make any fundamental changes. All I did was take out a handful of units and modify attack/defense values on others.

Thanks for any insight.

New Challenge with Oil on the Map

I just ran into a new challenge. After discovering rubber, I moved on and got Refining tech, which opened Oil. I proceeded to scan the map for oil and could barely find any. I did find one source in Russia one of my neighbors in a small island. Here is the challenges:

1. I have not yet found oil on my territory and wonder if new oil sources continue to "appear" turn after turn once refining is discovered, or if all oil sources are made visible on the same turn.

2. I do not want to go to war to acquire oil.

3. On the island where oil has been found, the source is on Russian soil. I have a city next to theirs. The size of my city is much smaller than the Russian's. I wonder if by adding more workers and military unit I can grow the city and see its border extends to include the oil that is currently on Russian soil. I have seen city radius expand all the time. What makes it expand?

4. If my opponents have not yet acquired refining, they can't see oil, so I could try to buy the Russian city. What tactic works well when trying to buy a cities? Should I plant a spy, use propaganda, etc.? Remember, I don't want to go to war. My challenge is to do it by diplomacy, cultural expansion, tactics, etc.

5. Again, since my oponents can't see oil on the map, they can't trade it. How can I help them acquire the tech to see oil while securing an oil trade at the same time? I don't want to trade a tech to allow them to get oil and then they would refuse to trade oil with me later on.

Lots of possibilities.

Balance of Power

Just a quick question of mine, I wonder if anyone else ever did this...I was playing a game with the Persians a while back and things were going great. My empire wasn't huge but it was highly efficient, I had a *slight* tech lead, one or two at most, a state-of-the-art army, and was groing rich and fat on some great trade deals because I was the only one to have incense, and I had plenty of it. My borders were seriously fortified after I had fought two short wars to counquer defendable ground, and all was well.So anyway, the continent to my east was basically two land masses joined by an isthmus 2 squares wide. The northern continent was pretty large and completely inhabited by the Babylonians, making them one of the top 3 civs in the game. South of the isthmus were the sizeable Germans. Both were superpowers, but there really wasn't any overlord civ. Then the Babylonians and Germans went to war. They fought for a long time and I didn't think anything of it, until at one point I noticed the Babylonians got the upper hand. From then on, things went fast: They totally ravaged the Germans. I was worried the Babylonians would become hugely powerful so I decided to intervene: I allied with the Germans, mobilized my civ, built loads of riflemen, cannons, cavalry, and sent in some ironclads to recon the sea routes and clear them for the galleons. By the time I got my forces in the ships and on their way, the Babs had all but destroyed the Germans, reducing them to an offshore island with 5 cities. So I fought a long and hard (and intensely fun!) campaign: I landed a force at the isthmus with a settler and a few workers, conquered and razed the nearest two Babylonian cities, built my own Fort Darius, built fortresses on the hills around it, sealing off the isthmus with riflemen and cannons. The Babylonians, throughout the war, put relentless pressure on this city but I had naval superiority so I could put in steady reinforcements. On the southern continent, I conquered a city to serve as my base of operations, split up my force into two armies: One slowly marched north through mountaineous terrain, conquering cities to link up with Fort Darius. The second, larger force swept east to take out the main Babylonian army and conquer the German cities they had taken. It took ages, but eventually I conquered the entire southern continent and made peace with Hammurabi, never once touching his home continent. So, after thwarting Hammurabi's grand all-conquering plans, I fortified the southern continent, rebuilt roads, railroads, built some basic structures in the cities like barracks and marketplaces, and then...Started giving away the cities. I gave about 5-8 back to the Germans, preserving a south-eastern city as a military base. The western cities I gave to the Romans, who were very small but trustworthy allies, and some to far-off civs like Russia. I did keep the city I had used as my first base, and of course I kept Fort Darius. So basically, I expended an enormeous amount of military resources and effort to defeat the Babylonians, and then a lot of work and money to repair the continent... Just to give it all away again. It seems a bit silly but I really didn't want that continent, it was just going to be teeming with corruption and give me lots of headaches.Has anyone ever done this? Or something similar? Any thoughts on it?

Ever feel like you are being taken advantage of?

This is how i feel taken advantage of. Of course a war erupted and the Dutch sent scores of ships to invade my continent. I had been building some bombers earlier on and had eight bombers spread over two cities when I saw a fleet of ships(four of them) closing in on my coastline. I sent my bombers to try to kill off some of these ships, hoping to sink one of them. What I was not aware of was the enormous efficiency of bombers against naval vessels. My eight bombers promptly sunk all of their ships and shortly after another fleet came and I sun them too. The point of this post is just to say "Bombers are the best at defending your continent from invasion!"

-After transporting some MA to the Dutch continent I took control of a city, built an airport and dropped alot of MA and bombers into the city. It proved to be a very efficient army. Bombers and Battleships had already bombarded any tiles that contained Special Resources and cut off the supply of all these resources to the Dutch and I was now free to attack the mainland. I sent my MA forward and when they reached a city my bombers would bombard the city(I had about 12 bombers in the city) and effectively destroyed any resistance. All the cities I captured had either one or two injured defenders or none at all due to the massive bombing it had sustained. I captured a city, rushed the airport, dropped in bombers and MA's(Plus some Mech's for defense) and did the same thing to the next city. I think I lost one or two bombers to flak, but other than that I had no problems.

-The range and power of the bomber is not to be underestimated.

-On a side note, I captured all the Dutch cities near Strategic Resources, made peace and went for Diplomatic Victory.
