Make a city 2.) Explore 3.) Find a good site for a second city.

1) 4000 BC- Entremont founded on site. Goody Hut gives us bronzeworking. Boy, all this jungle, an industrious civ would be great! Warrior started in city. I usually research first the Pottery or CB. We have both, so I go with Alphabet. 100 percent science does us no good (50 turns yet) so reduce the Science to 20 percent, Alphabet in 50 turns, 3gpt. Might as well build the treasury a little bit.

2) 3950 BC- Worker starts road.

3) 3900 BC- ZZzzzzzzzzzzzzz

4) 3850 BC- Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

5) 3800 BC- Worker builds road, starts mine. Added commerce gives break to our economy. Science upped to 90 percent, knocking off 6 turns from the Alphabet. Net income now ZERO.

6) 3750 BC- Entremont builds warrior, starts another. The exploration begins, northwards.

7) 3700 BC- Exploration

8) 3650 BC- Entremont grows. Exploration.

9) 3600 BC- Exploration.

10) 3550 BC- Exploration

11) 3500 Bc- Entremont Culture Expands. Entremont builds warrior, fortifies in towne, starts another. Worker completes road, moves to next tile. Exploration.

12) 3450 BC- Worker starts road. More Exploration.

13) 3400 BC- Exploration

14) 3350 BC- Entremont completes warrior, begins settler. Exlporation.

15) 3300 BC- Worker completes road, starts mine.

15) 3250 BC- Exploration

16) 3200 BC- Entremont grows to size 3. Exploration

17) 3150 BC- Exploration

18) 3100 BC- Exploration

19) 3050 BC- Entremont builds Settler. Settler and one warrior head northwest. Entremont starts granary. Exploration, goodhut spotted! :)

20) 3000 BC- Worker completes mine, heads to new tile. Settler/Warrior heads NW. Exploration.

WOW! It's a jungle out there!!!! We're going to need a ton of workers. The way I see it, we can head the settler North, 2 tiles direct, and settle right on top of the Dyes, or you can put 'em. West/SW on the coast near the goodyhut. I don't see it making much difference, except quick access to the Dyes may be very helpful. The bad news is the terrain, the good news, so far, no very close neighbors. The bad news, our capital is at an off-center location, the good news is, at least it has some productive grassland.

Goals for this session:

goals for this session: 1.) Make a city 2.) Explore 3.) Find a good site for a second city.

Goals completed. Sort of. There really is not good site in proximity to Entremont for that second city. We'll make due with what we have.

Alphabet in 24 turns. 28 gp in treasury. net loss 1 gpt.

Take her away!

3000 BC

Civilized Team Parties PBEM

Zone (Team MAAD) vs. Immortal (Team DPP) vs. LC/Ness (Team USP)

(no AI, custom map created by vonClausewitz)

Game Update Right now it is 470 AD and in the past couple turns, Team DPP declared war on and invaded team MAAD. The Premier world power (currently highest score, most powerful military), Team USP viewed this hostile act as unnecessary as there is plenty of land yet to expand peacefully, and as such, to preserve the balance and peace of the world, has declared war on Team DPP. So far, Team DPP has captured two Team MAAD border towns and Team USP has captured one Team DPP border town, and is set to march on the Team DPP capital, which by chance, contains the Statue of Zeus wonder. It is a mod for C3C 1.22, and if you are not familiar here is the link to the site with downloads etc.
http://civ3.bernskov.com/RaR/download.asp

I've been involved in some random map PBEMs with some other 1BC members before (VC, and Psweetman), but things did not go so well for me and I conceded out of the game fairly early as I recall.

The problem I faced in that one was that, my starting location really sucked as far as food goes. Basically, this mod is set up so that, only high food producing areas (flood plains, cattle 1, or other early discovered food resources) produce enough food to allow a city to be able to grow very big. If you are lucky enough to start with good food in this mod, you are golden. If not, you're screwed. Course, later on, techs, and other food sources discovered gradually make more and more of the world capable of supporting larger cities, but at the start, if you do not have at least one good site for a major city, you are definitely screwed. Given the nature of this mod, it is a real shame if every civ (particular humans) do not start out with a decent starting location, because with all the various units, small wonders, etc., the possibilities for mid to late game twists and turns in a PBEM are dramatic and intriguging. In fact, it would almost be good to simply give each tribe an automatic two cities or something like that . . . just to skip ahead through the slow early game tedium.

Thus, random maps are a bit of a problem which we'd like to try to circumvent.

Normally I'm averse to having more than 3 humans, but if we can get some REALLY committed players, maybe we could do more than 3.
I figure we need at least four guys to be able to pull this off, because the easiest solution to the random map problem would be, lets say we have three human players and decide to have a standard size map with 4 AI on Monarch difficulty, slowest speed (the long turn version .biq). If we can get a fourth person who will upload the extended game version .biq (which BTW, had errors in the original DL, I'd have to send it to you) and generate us a random map, then screen it to make sure all the starting locations are good, that would be ideal.
If that person also wanted to play, then the solution would be to have two three person games going, and with two different guys (whichever two guys were not keen to play in two PBEMs at once) acting as the fourth map-screeners for the other set of three players.
Just in case no one else understand what I'm saying any better than I think I do, imagine the following: four guys express interest: Scipio, Scotty, Joe, Dave.
Team 1:
Joe = map generator, Scipio, Scotty, and Dave are players
Team 2:
Dave = map generatory, Scipio, Scotty, and Joe are players.
The problem(s) in the extended version .biq of the game were sort of serious. The turn durations, etc., were misset so that the game would spontaneously time out at about 1878 AD. Probably the easiest thing is, if everyone either DLs the latest version or else if they already have it, then I simply jot a quick note explaining what the settings should be corrected to in the editor. It is quite easy to do.
The even more ideal solution would be if the map screeners do three additional things: go into the editor and set which tribes are playable as humans (perhaps based on stated preferences of the PBEM players) and specify the tribal identity of the starting locations for the human players. This would be to insure that, (a) the Romans do not start out in the middle of a tropical jungle, and the Arabs do not start out in the middle of an arctic wasteland (not commensurate with their histories); that (b) no two humans are more likely to make early contact with one another than the other two dyads. Also, the map screener could insure that, (c) each human has at least one AI nemesis nearby to keep them busy in the early game, and that (d) there is a "New World" land mass with no starting civs on it (or not, at random depending on the map screeners preference).

What is this?

What is PBEM and dynasty and how does it work????

Locus Coeruleus and Ness Dynasty IV

The Dynasty Game to end all Civ3 Dynasty GamesCivilization: [red]Byzantines[/red] (renamed Utopians)Seafaring and ScientificDifficulty: DEITYWorld Size: HugeMap Type: Archipelago (80% water)Climate: NormalTemperature: Temperate AI Civilizations: 16 at random

looking for a PBEM game

Hi guys, looking to be invited to a game

SMAC Dynasty Game...

To console myself for not getting cIV anytime soon I pulled out good old SMAC and started up a few games... We don't have the greatest starting location, but there would appear to be some promising lands to the East. There are Dyes in the Jungle. We'll have to deal with the blue colored tribe fairly early, and who knows how far the French are. The French don't have CB, but won't give us Masonry, Bronze Working or Warrior Code for it. All they have is 10 gp. I'll let you decide if you want to sell it to them or not. (Conquests version)It will be Mass Regicide, I ask that people actually pick an actual country to represent as I am a perfectionist and the land of Bluice just doesn't have a ring to it. Example, mine will be Prime Minister Bluice, Australia, Australians, Australian (this stuff goes in ur details at the start). The Mass Regicide will consist of 7 "king" units. As I will be the Ottomans my units will be Sultans. Therefore I request that everyone personally name every "king" unit they have to comprise a royal family that will inevitably end up being the most wanted people in your country (Because if all king units die then u die in regicide). This naming of "king" units will be done when you perform your first turn. Remember I'm not trying to make things difficult I'm just trying to make this game an enjoyable experience by having real naming countries and the royal families to go with each country. Try it it'll be fun!We will use this thread as a "United Nations" to discuss topics that concern all countries such as turn progression and admin disputes. We've never played civ in this mode. The question is how does the diplomacy between human players in PBEM game look like, how does it work?

PBEM: What You Should Know Before You Start

Feb 10, 2005If you are interested in PBEM, this essay may be of interest to you. It is not meant to discourage interest in PBEM games, but merely to offer some insights based on experience about possible complications, difficulties, and unforeseen consequences of the PBEM Civilization gaming phenomenon. This is a revised version of an essay written October 26, 2004 to some PBEM buddies from civ3.1bigcommunity.com (von Clausewitz, Esoteric Disillusion, and Psweetman). We at that time were engaged in a PBEM called “RAR1” we were only up to 3800BC and already beginning to suffer the delays which unfortunately seem to be endemic to PBEM. In response to this essay, EDis, very honorably, and with great foresight, decided that PBEMs demanded too much time, and that he would bow out earlier rather than later. Basically, reading the essay made him realize some of the characteristics of PBEM which one does not immediately anticipate, in the flush of enthusiasm to join or start a new one. So if you’ve never played a PBEM, this essay might provide some cautionary insight into what to expect. PBEM is delightfully fun when it is going well, but getting it to go well requires a certain commitment, and actually making such a commitment requires a certain understanding of the long-term cyber-relationship one is entering into when starting a PBEM.VC, PS and I subsequently resorted to a PBEM called RAR2, and we are up to about 1400 BC with that one. At present, it appears to be THE ONLY PBEM in which I am playing, which is still active, and not gone extinct because of disinterest and neglect by one or more players, else a game having officially ENDED by virtue of one or more players conceding defeat. I’ve left the original essay as it was written, but added my Feb 2005 updates in [brackets].“Edis, no worries on the delay. These things happen. Certainly it is to be avoided if at all possible.Apart from our two RAR games I've entered into about 11 or 12 total PBEMs so far. Couple of which were just goofing around with guys I was already in a chronic PBEM with (Ddmagnan and Muk). As such, the fact that these stalled reflects that they were really just experimenting with different stuff (Mesopot, WWII Pac), and we consequently realized that it was not of great interest to one or both of us involved. The others constitute what I would classify as having been claimed attempts to get real long-term PBEM games going among a group of guys. Out of those 7 or 8 other games which were started, only two are actually ongoing now, after several months [and as of Feb, 2005, even these have either ended or have been stalled for months]. One is up to 1200 AD ("Stinking Dry Mess" with Muk, Ddmagnan and me), one is up to about 300BC (TML mod PBEM). [Stinking Dry Mess ended when Muk stopped returning turns, because of an impending move back to Uzbekistan. Ddmagnan was in the lead on that one, and I conceded defeat to him, and the game is now officially over, though it was not played to a technical win. In the other game, TML, one of the participants is currently entrenched in University work, and no turns have been distributed for at least a month, if not two. We’ll see if it ever continues or not]. All the other one's are officially dead, and I think most everyone has deleted all the files (VC can attest to how these games died, as he was in a couple of them). Most of them included more than 4 guys, some as many as eight players. [One other point of note, my sense of other players experiences with PBEM is that, the majority of games which are started wind up ending in this way].Of these dead PBEMs to which so many guys contributed their time, I'd say a good 5 or 6 of them included at least one, if not two of the younger guys from 1BC for whom interest in Civilization seems to have been a flash in the pan, given that they posted on 1BC for a few months, and are now unheard of for the last 4 or 5 months. One individual in particular seemed to recurrently be a broken link in the chain of sending turns on in several of those dead games. This individual seems to have single-handedly inconvenienced at least a dozen other individuals! My two PBEMs that are still ongoing (SDM and TML) are I think, fun for everyone involved. Despite the fact that there have been wars, and rivalries, razed cities, destruction, threats, ultimatums, etc., etc., AND not everyone is what I would call a THRIVING civilization any longer, with any strong chance of winning. My anecdotal observation is that, in addition to whatever other factors influence delays in turns, most guys get disengaged and delay when they feel that they are losing. Obviously, a delay of a day is totally reasonable if you are in a complicated situation, and need to do a bunch of emailing for diplomacy sake or think hard about the turn you have to do. If you approach it the right way, it can still be fun to do the turns, even after you are a more or less moribund tribe with little hope of pulling out a victory (believe me, I know from experience! :). When a player takes the game too seriously (as I have been guilty of doing myself) and gets too emotionally involved, it might become difficult to maintain interest, if it looks like the tables are turning :) Also, feeling like other players are "ganging up on you" might contribute to such disinterest and delays in playing. Most of this can be avoided if everyone realizes from the outset that it is just a game, and that what we all say to one another as "Leaders of the X tribe" are strictly role playing---no matter how much we might instinctively take it personally, and think that the content of such relates in some significant way to the standards, ethics, morals, or actions of the real persons on the other end of the wire typing at us.Delays when guys travel, have a wife-focused-weekend, get sick, or whatever are inevitable. To the extent that one can remember, else foresee these things, and warn the others ("I'm gonna be incommunicado for this coming weekend . . .") it is a good thing, but this can't always happen that way, and being incommunicado for a week is certainly not basis to be excommunicated from the game! :) Though beyond a week, and the others are certainly justified in starting to think about finding a replacement.End of Part One

We should start a major PBEM Game.

We should start a major PBEM Game.

One more needed for PBEM (reopened as of 21st Jan)

As no one is likely to be reading a thread which seems to have a PBEM underway, I thought I'd best advertise in a new thread.Over here is a PTW PBEM which someone has dropped out of, because they couldn't figure out how to open PTW through conquests. The best part, is that, even if someone gets 10 Wonders in the early part of the game, they could still get their butt kicked cause there are SO MANY alternative strategies possible with all the various wonders, buildings, resources, units, techs, etc.In short, much more realistic.Anyone up for a PBEM using this mod?I'm gonna suggest Regent level AI, standard planet 80% ocean, and 3 humans (MAXIMUM 4). First two guys to speak up we can initiate talking it over by email or MSN instant messenger. If there is a fourth/fifth person, well we can just start a 2nd PBEM!! using this Mod :)Reason is, too many guys tends to slow things down, folks get frustrated, the game winds up going bust. Out of about 9 PBEMs I've initated, only one is really still going (3 guys total), and only two ever really went for very long (both 3 guys). The one's with >3 tended to last about 5 or 10 turns then sputter. Some more suggestions on settings: Accel Prod ON to speed up early game progress; Barbs on moderate intensity; Because of the different way deserts, jungles, marshes, etc. work in the mod, we'll want to think about the climate settings, but I'd say 5 byo planet. As for picking your civ, I'll play whatever, random is fine, and feel free to pick yours if you want.

M:TW (VI) Dynasty Game

How about it? To quote Zone:
May I suggest we test run the idea with a simple VI campaign (Mercians?) to sort out sensible settings (how many turns we take etc. etc.). That shouldn't take too long - couple of weeks to a month if we can play the turns neatly - I'm not really sure how long it would take, that's a complete guestimate. then we could go for a longer Campaign. A Gauntlet?

Greetings...Okay - I'm ready...How does this PBEM thing work anyway?Does someone start the game off with all the various preferences and then we just trade the save game? Well, just in case - Here's what I like: Huge world: I like LONG Games with lots of running room! I like to sneak that fleet around a nice WIDE ocean...Pangea: The Larger Pangea's are okay, but I've found that the AI never builds navies if you use the largest Pangea, So actually the middle sized Pangea gives the best AI navies. I like Pangeas to minimize the liberal brain damage involved in that whole "Only on the continent built" thing with WoW's... Silly stupid liberals.... Warm and Wet - I like LOT's of jungles and deserts, Jungles are cool! Well, actually they are hot and steamy, and they smell bad.... And having loads of rivers doesn't hurt either... If you really want some bizarre terrain make the world only 3 billion years old, if you want mountain ranges, make it 4, if not, make it 5... Surprise me! Now I like to have the diplomatic circle completely filled Including us, the human player - without having to switch, I tend to forget who I've already talked to! But I'm flexible in this - Again, surprise me - If you want to start it with 16 civs, I'm up for it, or only 2, no sweat, Now THAT would be interesting!! Only the 2 of us? heheheeheee... Though I think a minimum of 4 civs, 2 of us, and two of them, ( to be used as client states of course) would make it much more interesting... As for race, don't tell me what you are! I like to be surprised... For myself, I really don't care - I can play them all, though I prefer a civ who's special unit appears in the middle to late industrial, like the english, or the early modern, like the germans. Unless you Make it a HUGE number of civs, in which case, an Iron age special unit or earlier is just fine with me... I don't care if it's a male or female picture, that doesn't bother me either way... How does diplomacy between humans work in PBEM? I imagine it's terribly slow...I can't think of anything else off the top of my head at the moment -

custom civ PBEM

conquests, v1.22. e-mail me with a realistic custom civ (after signing up to play).
