Ok, look, it's not all Baptists, it's Southern Baptists, and certain groups of them at that. Many of those guys are a bunch of kooks. Trust me, I live in the bible belt just surrounded by these folks. Many are fine, and many are insanely hateful and narrow-minded. One of the largest Baptist Seminaries in the US is right down the street from me.

I've had it happen to me. When I was younger, I went with a friend to some event at his church. No sooner do they find out I'm Catholic than they start telling me I need to be saved, and to accept Jesus Christ as my lord and personal savior and turn away from Satan. Huh? We Catholics didn't really use these terms in the same way so I was confused and a bit scared. It was rather uncomfortable to an 11-year-old, believe me.

Certain sects of Southern Baptists will very calmly try to convert you and pray for you while they matter-of-factly tell you why you're going to hell. But it's not all of them. The Southern Baptists themselves can't even agree on some things.

More fundamentalist versions of S.B.'s will continue to exert a very narrow definition of Christianity and the path to eternal life and away from the fires of hell. This is due to the way that education is viewed amongst these groups. An excerpt from the Baptist Faith and Message.

Basically stating that if education, science, etc. gets crossways with their view of God and scripture, there will be problems. There is no room for debate, reason etc. when you are dealing with the most fundamentalist members of the S.B.'s

The best thing to do with people like this is ignore them.

I searched for more info since you guys are curious to whether or not its real and I can't seem to find anything more concrete than people debating whether or not its real. lol.

So, debate on, I guess, unless someone fesses up to making it, or someone from that church shows a real one, maybe.

Jerm and LC, I hate to speak for a religion or sect I don't follow, but many, if not most Baptist churches teach that dancing is a sin, or more specifically leads to sinful behavior and prohibits it. Found this site with a quick search on baptists talking about it.

Remember his flap about him calling the Teletubbies a gay icon, or him saying we invited 9/11 because of sins? There's more in that Wiki link. But dancing being a sin is fairly common belief amongst Baptists. I don't want to make any of our 1BC Southern friends uncomfortable or put them on the spot, but I'd bet at least one of them were raised Baptist or at least had close friends who were. Perhaps someone feels brave enough to share more?

Yeah, that is what I am saying, not that it is a fradulent document, just that it could well be a joke.

I know I have heard of some conservative Christian groups that ARE, in fact, against Dancing, I just forget whom and where. It might be the Baptists... they are, AFTER ALL, officially against drinking...

The green bottle fly (Phaenicia sericata) is the weapon of choice for modern medical maggot therapy. These little wonders will usually clean a wound better than any human debridement can possibly manage. This is due to the fact that they will only eat dead flesh, and will leave living tissue alone. They may be one of the most efficient wound care vectors, but sadly are not used much due to the "ick" factor.

I have had to order some at my facility before.

Nice documentaries RK. I love when they take looks at ancient scripture versus archaeology.

That's one point I think we'd agree on. The bible is metaphorical rather than literal, it was written and compiled by humans, often with certain motivations that we do not understand nor can we assume to be innocent. It contains great messages (even if taken as philosophical rather than spiritual) but we must take it with a hefty grain of salt.

Happiness is what we all want. It equates to security. Parents provide it for their sions, so does god. People are very creative and impressive. Afterall we watch theater and experience real emotions, although all know that it is just acting. Then there are few critics who themselves are so starved in the creative department, that non has been able to gift us with an equivalent of king Lear. Thank god few they are.

God provides security and happiness. Embrace this & u will thank me many years down the road.

You might add the purpose to deliver some meaning to life and a symbolic universe and such stuff, mutatis mutandis for the various religions, but then I think you have it generally right.

Also here one might add similar systems that arguably underwent the same development and are not religion. I am thinking for example of the state. Also the system of education and science has this tendency. The purpose is to elevate and inform, but once you have institutions such as schools and universities, you will have officials such as teachers and professors who are imbued with authority by that same system, but may start using it to their own advantage and wield the power that they have for its own sake (or their personal interest or what have you) and not necessarily for the greater good to which the system was put in place.

I think you touch upon a very generic tendency in social systems that you might call deterioration, but somewhat more neutrally can call homeostasis - a system works to keep itself in place.

Any system empowers designated authority figures that operate the system. It is a necessary byproduct. the question is whether it is its purpose and whether it is its sole purpose.

This got me thinking a bit. In the God, Risk Insurance thread, I quoted Sam Harris:

I then got to thinking about previous comments about how no one commits terrorist acts in the name of atheism (thanks to your lovely image of the Trade Center). This is true, but only because no one commits any acts in the name of atheism, it doesn't "exist". What do exist are organizations who commit terrorist acts in the name of ideology, specifically extreme secular ideology. Here's a list of the ones I can think of off hand:
