Porn, Smoking, SUV's, eating habits and lots of other things are "picked on" by the government because society sees them as social ailments and yet other things like youth drinking and hours spent by children in front of the TV are ignored which are probably just as, if not more destructive to society. Video games are pretty low on my list of things to worry about government control. I'd rather young people spend much less time doing something which will not do anything but waste endless hours of their lives. While I agree in principal with less governmental oversight on these kinds of issues, video game regulations are probably last on my list of things to worry about.

RE: FTC Undercover Shopper 2008

I'm not really going to disagree, I just wanted to make sure people know why they are against it. The article you linked to is showing results of a policy of some sort? Why is it that companies have decreased sales to minors with regards to M Rated video games but not with Eplicit Lyric music and Rated R movies? Is there a higher penalty in doing so? I guess I don't get what the government did that is different with Video Games than Movies and Music.

RE: FTC Undercover Shopper 2008
jerm (5/31/2008)
So, (throws bomb) what's the big deal with the government regulating what kids will be allowed to buy anyway? :Whistling:
Relights fuse... Because video games are being singled out. If the politicians, lawyers, and pc footsoldiers were targeting all these forms of media it would be one thing. I still wouldn't agree, but I could at least respect their position. However only video games are being targeted for government regulation.

It's so strange that this happens to every generation. The older generation points to the newer generation's media and cry that its immoral or garbage. Then when the younger generation gets older, they turn around and do it to the next one. People can be such hypocrites.

RE: FTC Undercover Shopper 2008

I'm guessing we know the answer to that question. RK, I really DO NOT care what YOU ARE opinion is. (Hmmmm, didn't work there SO GOOD.) I have my ways. Cleo has hers. _M_ has his. AND so on and so forth. It is still self regulated, by whip. Maybe a good thing. But Parents do need to wake up and accept responsibility for their kids. Or, someone, somewhere will, and not always with the kid's best interest in mind. (politics, power and money). This stretches far beyond just gaming. When we, (the American Public), forget, ignore, and basically neglect our freedoms, we will loose them. An inconvenient truth.

RE: FTC Undercover Shopper 2008
jerm (5/31/2008)
So, (throws bomb) what's the big deal with the governmentregulating what kids will be allowed to buy anyway?:Whistling:
-I'm pretty sure the industry is regulating itself, unless something's happened in the last few weeks that I hadn't noticed. What, with all the drinking their doing in the local pubs to pull in the votes of the average Joe and Josephine. I thought they took alcohol adds of TV to prevent kids from getting the wrong idea? But I guess it's okay to down shots and beer on tv if your a Presidential Candidate. I'm not a big McCain fan, but he is the only one I haven't seen do this on air. Hillary and Obama are bending elbows like champs on air. And their worried about the effects of gaming? Seems too me, they should worry more about the effects of the message they are sending. Their hypocrisy knows no bounds. I think it was a Harvard study. The last time they topped the list was 2000. Talk about pandering.
http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2008/05/secretshop.shtm
The Federal Trade Commission today released the results of its latest nationwide undercover shop of movie theaters and movie, music, and video game retailers. The FTC conducted a survey with 13-to-16-year-old undercover shoppers to collect data about the extent to which retailers prevent unaccompanied children from buying tickets to R-rated movies, R-rated DVDs, Unrated DVDs of movies that were R-rated in theaters, M-rated video games, and music CDs labeled with a Parental Advisory Label – “PAL” – for explicit content.
