It seems you Brits love your American Football because the NFL keeps going back over there, this time for a Regular Season Game.

This is especially intriguing. Because of the fact that the NFL plays only one game a week, it could definitely be feasible. With the London squad playing blocks of 4 games at home then 4 games on the road, for example, a month on, a month off, more or less.

Of course, an expansion team would bust up the perfect balance the NFL has of 8 divisions with 4 teams each, but so what. It is doable.

They would, though, have to change the name from the NFL to the WFL, or so such thing. :)

The TCU Horned Frogs had 5 players drafted. Tied for 10th among all schools, most of any school in Texas!!

Lance Amstrong Comeback

Observations from the MWC tournament

The tourney out at the Thomas & Mack is really something that MWC Basketball fans should see at least once. Of course, it's Vegas so you can combine the tournament and a spectacular vacation into the same trip. I'll keep my comments quasi-basketball related...

1. Besides Colorado State (who was out after the first day), TCU was the most grossly underrepresented fan group at the tournament, by far. Not surprising given the distance, the economy and the timing vs. spring break. Our fans were not many, but enthusiastic. BYU traveled really well. There had to have been 5000 at least for the Coogs. Wyoming also traveled well, considering the distance. UNM, UU and SDSU decent showings too. I also learned that BYU girls are really cute but I hear they're imported from Cali and AZ. We were thanked by a Utah fan that we got to know for bringing the lovely Texas girls comprised of our showgirls/cheerleaders.

2. The refs were, as it's been said before, awful. I don't just mean in the TCU-Utah mens battle - I mean all tournament long. This was stated by the fans of more than one team during more than one game, including our new Utah buddy who was ridiculing some of the calls that went against TCU that Thursday night. My biggest complaint? Inconsistency. Too many times people would get mauled on moving screens and drives to the basket, but on jump shots there were touch or even phantom fouls called. The driving guards were getting away with forearm-pushoffs every time. One offensive foul called for this maneuver during the whole tourney. To qualify, most of the time the calls seemed to affect both sides equally, but the flow of the game was awful at times and it was hard to fathom some of the calls in context and at really inopportune moments.

3. The tournament is a neat place to meet new people from all over. Became friends with some UNLV guys, the aforementioned Utah guy, and a dude from New Mexico. You get to see all sorts of traditions and chants. I can now whistle 6 MWC fight songs off the top of my head. I hear "S-D-S-U" and "Re-bels" chants in my sleep.

4. TCU band was by far the best group there. It's too bad they didn't get to play more. This observation was made by many with no allegiance to the school. Good job guys and girls!

5. Other teams' fans were proud of our effort on Thursday night and we should be too. The guys played their guts out and looked absolutely sick when things didn't go our way in the last minute. It wasn't from lack of effort, strategy or energy - not that night. It was simply bad calls/breaks/misses/UU makes. By the end of the game, most of the non-partisan section of the crowd was on our side. Utah fans looked shaken. TCU fans would get wholeheartedly congratulated and consoled the rest of the tournament. We may not have gained a win, but we gained BBall respect.

6. We're gaining national brand recognition, slowly but surely. Many locals as well as tourist-type people acknowledged my TCU garb.

All in all, good fun and good games, even if they may not be Big East or ACC-worthy. I wouldn't be surprised to see BYU or Utah grind their way to the Sweet 16.

I mean, come on. Utah? From the Mountain West? There's an awful lot of momentum for Utah to be crowned king in the final Associated Press poll, the final one of the 2008 season, which comes out shortly after the ostensible national championship game between Florida and Oklahoma on Thursday night. The AP poll has that kind of freedom, considering it has cut ties with the Bowl Championship Series. The AP poll could make a stand for Utah, and against the BCS, all in one motion by erecting the Utes as the No. 1 team in college football.

Gag me.

Could we in the media, and everywhere else for that matter, please look at the Sugar Bowl for what it was? It was an exhibition game. It was meaningless. It was watered-down football, what with Alabama missing the very best pro prospect, and probably the very best player, in the SEC in suspended offensive tackle Andre Smith.

Now I'm in the position of having to make excuses for that cretin Nick Saban, and that really ticks me off. But here goes. In the span of one day, Alabama went from the fantasy of hoping to play for the national championship to the reality of having to play Utah in the Sugar Bowl. Until it lost to Florida in the SEC title game, Alabama thought it would play for everything. And then it ended up playing for nothing. That's the Sugar Bowl, if you're Alabama. It's nothing.

Go back to August, and it's a different story. Had you told the Crimson Tide in August, when they were unranked, that in January they would be playing an undefeated team, even Utah, in the Sugar Bowl, Alabama would have been good and fired up. But a lot changed. Over time Alabama ascended to No. 1, a plain mistake, but a mistake foisted on us by the same voters who now have the power in their hands to make Utah No. 1. So anything is possible.

But Alabama went from No. 1 to the stinking Sugar Bowl. Alabama was understandably down. Utah, given the chance to play a BCS league big boy, was understandably up. The result was understandable. Utah won 31-17.

And now it's everywhere. The Washington Post says Utah should be No. 1. That's not going to happen, of course, and the New York Daily News says Utah's exclusion from the No. 1 conversation is proof that the BCS is a failure.

Meanwhile, back on planet Earth ...

People, please. Utah is the same team that beat Michigan 25-23. Michigan went 3-9 this season.

Utah is the same team that beat Air Force 30-23. Air Force went 8-5.

Utah beat Weber State 37-21. Weber State isn't even in Division I.

Utah beat New Mexico 13-10. New Mexico went 4-8.

These are facts. But people don't want to hear facts right now, because they'd rather burn down the big, bad BCS witch. As if the BCS is so bad. I'm all about getting the right system, just as long as someone can come up with one. An actual playoff, with 40,000 fans of Oklahoma or Ohio State or Texas being asked to mobilize week after week after week to the far reaches of the country? Not realistic. Games every weekend through the month of December, like they do it in Division I-AA? Feasible, but not ideal.

A plus-one system? Fine. But who are the plus-one teams this year? The winner of the Florida-Oklahoma game is one. Utah, I guess, would be another. What about Texas? Southern California?

You say plus-one, I say plus-four. And some years, plus-six. Which puts us back where we started, with no real solution to the BCS problem. Meanwhile, the BCS has been infinitely better than the previous system, where the No. 1 team in the country might beat the crap out of the No. 7 team in a Jan. 1 bowl and be crowned the national champion. At the time, people thought that made sense. You see my point? People are dumb. People are weak and easily influenced by the here and now.

So, people, please. Do not be fooled by the here and now of Utah's win over Alabama. Do not be fooled by the media clamoring.

Utah is a very good team, probably even a top 10 team.

But Florida would kick Utah's ***. And so would Oklahoma.

Barkley Cries Race

In a day and age when we've elected our first African-American POTUS, we still can't move on and work together. When a white man/woman gets a high profile job over a black man/woman, we still have to hear the race card played...

I agree with the principal we need to have more black head football coaches in D1, but are schools just to hire one because he's black? Chizik has succes, too (just like Gill), but at higher levels, and plus he has the ties with Auburn.

What I'd like see done is to give more black O and D Coordinators who have shown promise a chance at the head job. Like New Mexico taking Illinois' O Coordinator Locksley. The man is a very good recruiter and motivator. We'll see if he has the X's and O's -- though as a disciple of Zook, that's anyone's guess... :P

"I was really pulling for Turner Gill when the job first opened," said Barkley, who doesn't know Gill personally. "I went on a couple of (radio) shows in Alabama. I just can't believe they picked this guy over Turner Gill. I'm just in shock."

Then, Barkley said the decision "doesn't surprise me at all."

He said he agreed to serve on Auburn's search committee to hire a basketball coach before the 2004-05 season on the condition the school hire a black candidate. He pitched Mike Davis, Mike Anderson and Jeff Capel as worthy candidates, and says now all three wanted the job. Auburn hired Jeff Lebo.

"They said, 'We're ready to hire a black coach,"' Barkley said. "I figured out right away they were not going to hire a black coach."

He said he went public with his complaints.

"They kicked me off the committee the next day," he said. "I have kept the secret about that for quite awhile. Clearly it's got something to do with race."[/quote]

Death of an NFL legend

Most NFL players don't live past 75. Sammy Baugh lived to be 94, and passed away yesterday.

It's a shame that the NFL hasn't promoted its seminal players like MLB has. You know who Lou Gherig, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, even Shoeless Joe Jackson and Walter Johnson are. Not as many know Sammy Baugh.

The history of this unique player is summed up best in this ESPN feature. If it were not for Sammy Baugh and the passing ability he demonstrated, the game of football may have developed much differently indeed. His ability as what we now know as a QB doesn't diminish the fact that he was one of the greatest punters and DB's the league has seen.

My favorite moment - as a rookie his coach remarked that he had heard Baugh was a good passer. He challenged him to throw the ball to a moving receiver and hit him "in the eye".

Baugh asked him, "which eye?"

R.I.P. Sammy, TCU and Redskins legend.

A neat alternate gift idea

Hey I know that in this time our cash is all tight and whatnot. If anyone had a stack of funds laying around though, or wanted to make themselves or someone else feel good about, err, themselves, here's a worthy cause.

Purple people seaters are some good folks (I'm not affiliated) and they send at-risk and disadvantaged kids to go see a football game. In this case the kids will be lucky enough to see one of the best games out there. Tax-deductible too, for those who like that sort of thing.

Now, if you're like me and you have parents (or any relative, friend or loved one) who just plain doesn't want you to buy them something for Christmas, you could do what I did and donate on their behalf. I'm finding out more info about getting a little something sent to my folks telling them what the donation was in their name. If anyone wanted to do the same you could PM me and by that time I'd probably have the scoop.

Not a solicitation - just a thought from your ol' buddy Frogger.:)

Fix the B(c)S!

The BCS is garbage. Teams like Washington State, Baylor, Texas A&M, Syracuse, Mississippi State, N.C. State clog up BCS conferences and (theoretically) have opportunities every year for a national title, even with one loss. But teams like TCU, Boise State, Tulsa and Utah have to bust their humps and go undefeated in a year to even make a BcS bowl, and forget playing for a national championship. Don't even give me the argument that TCU couldn't beat Miss. St or Utah couldn't destroy Washington State - it doesn't fly.

This is a monopoly and should be broken apart.

So... what's your best solution for fixing the problem?

For us Yanks who don't know, this guy is an absolute loose cannon. Remember the Mike Gundy "I'm a MAN!! I'm 40!!!" speech? Joe Kinnear has one under his belt that makes Mike gundy look like Barney the purple dinosaur. Calling reporters c*nts and dropping the F bomb 40 or 50-something times.

We need a thread for the upcoming football tournament in Austria and Switzerland.

Group A
Czech Republic - a good side, but a little bit past its prime
Portugal - one of the favorites
Turkey - a great outsider that IMHO may surprise us
Switzerland - the first candidate to be knocked out, had they not played at home
Portugal to go through, but what second team? I bet on Turkey, but the others stand a really good chance no less.

Group B
Croatia - who did they recruit from the Zagreb Zimmerframe Home?
Germany - tipped by everyone to win. The best tournament record. Even when they play bad, the Germans are to be reckoned with. But have you seen that coach?
Poland - Speaking of coaches... Anyway, the match with Germany is one to look forward to
Austria - Oh boy, how on earth did they get here? Ah, they are the organizers. How nice.
The weakest group. Germany's way to the quarter-finals paved, well in advance. With Poland trailing.

Group C
Netherlands - A nice side with a respectable record. But to start a tournament against the World Champion and then against the runners-up? Too much.
Italy - World Champion. Nothing to add
Romania - Clearly the number four of this deadly group. But hey, didn't they beat the Dutch in the qualifiers?
France - getting old and still going strong. New players on the rise.
This group is going to kill off a potential winner. If not Holland, then who?

Group D
Sweden - An outsider to lookout for
Spain - The great underachiever of international tournaments. When will their moment come? Never I think. They have the toughest league - that's why all the stars are worn out before the Euros and World Cups
Greece - Surprise winners last time round. Costing me a huge bet made before the tournament, that couldn't go wrong anymore, once the semi-finals had come round, unless.... Living proof, together with Denmark, Euros are great for outsider champions
Russia - Arrived by the skin of their teeth at the expense of England, the best side not present. Russia has the best coach in the world, they can make semi-finals on the basis of that alone.
Greece to drop, Russia to go through. Sweden or Spain? Sweden I say.

Well...my review on the Super Bowl game between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants...

IT SUCKED!!!

The game was pretty boring. The first quarter was decent and the fourth quarter was very intense, but the 2nd and 3rd were boring and full of stupid plays and thumbles...

Congrats to the Giants on winning. Poor Patriots lost when it matterd most. Very defensive game - would have liked to seen more scoring, but then again, the Giants are a defensive team. :P

If I was s Buffalo season ticket holder I would be very angry. They are losing one of their games and are second in line for the right to pay an outrageous amount to get it back. I felt bad for the Miami and Giants fans when that game was played in London, but this is even worse. The NFL and the owners already make tons of money, why do they feel the need to screw their fans and then have the gall to act like they're doing them a favor?
