This is a great mod, I love how the cities name is context dependent based upon location and civ. I've never done this sort of story telling before, but I thought this would be a fun one to give it a go at. I’ve actually played the game up through the mid 1800’s. This first installment will take us through the establishment of the foundations of the British Empire. Next up, probably this weekend, I will expand upon the "Era of Exploration" and add some screen shots as well. Feel free to leave any comments.

The in game quests for the British are:

1) Be the first to circumnavigate the globe
2) Found 3 cities on each continent by 1740 AD
3) Be the first to reach the Industrial and Modern eras

The Era of Consolidation

In a dreary year of an era unknown in the southern regions of a small island west of the continental mainland (a smaller island exists west of the main larger island, but it is known to be inhabited by the barbaric Irish tribe. The Irish, as it is well known, are best left to themselves), the burgeoning English culture heavily influenced by Germanic settlers has surpassed that established in these lands first by Celtic tribes, who were at one point Romanized by an ancient Empire. Recently settled by northern Germanic ancestors of the Anglo-Saxon variety, now inhabited by a native blend of Germanic-Celtic-Roman people, most of whom never have set foot on the mainland; a certain absence of culture exists, one that, as time would have it, is ripe to be filled.

Lo and behold, there is a strong Nordic presence in the North of the larger Eastern Island. The first ever cities to be founded on the British Isles, the Viking establishments of Inverness and Cork.

So learning a thing or two from those who have been there before, the Britons quickly establish cultural centers of London and Plymouth, to the south of the capital city of London. As fate would have it, Plymouth would one day become the most important seaport in the world.

Some time later, and not wanting to miss out on the action on the mainland, a few hardy settlers hop on a boat and head for the lower Scandinavian peninsula and found the city of Aarhus. This peninsula is known by the natives as Denmark.

Meanwhile, so splendid was the newfound British culture that the citizenry of Cork and Inverness evicted their Viking lords and pledged their allegiance to the Royal British Monarchy. Not a drop of blood was shed; thus at once, the British presence encompassed the entire Eastern British Island.

Shortly after that, the remaining initial crop of British settlers crossed the narrow channel to the west, and taught the backwards native Irish population a thing or two about culture and established for them protection and the cultural center of Dublin- so long as they would swear their loyalty to the Royal British Monarchy.

At that point, open land was scarce. Tribes known as the French and Germans boxed in British-Denmark…at one point a rather large French war party, consisting of several sword-wielding regiments seemed poised to strike Aarhus, what with its lone garrison of the Longbow. Seeing the writing on the wall, the British Monarchy ordered the Longbow Garrison and a local worker crew to hop on the available Royal Naval Galley and high-tail it out of there for the safe haven of the British homeland. No sooner than the Aarhus military presence had been evacuated, however, in typical French fashion, did the French War Party seemingly monitor the situation to determine it was not in her favor and took a 180 turn back to the French homeland. Perhaps the Denmark Peninsula was meant to be a part of the Commonwealth until the end of time.

To the north, on the other hand, the Viking tribes had quickly established their presence throughout the upper Scandinavian peninsula and then looked to expand eastwards into the Lapplands, as they called it, and beyond. No matter how mighty the British presence on the islands, there would be no cultural wooing on the continent. Any further land grabbing would have to be by force.

But expansion by force is seemingly not the British way. With vast oceans to the west of Dublin and the South of Plymouth, surely there must be more out there than the French, Germans, and Vikings. So the Royal British Monarchy decreed that all scientific funding would be poured into the development of bigger, better and stronger ships, as well as the appropriate technologies to navigate the open seas.

To be continued...
World of Warcraft stories

I know that they're not Civ stories but just in case anyone wanted to see what I've been doing with my writing (other than my day job), let me point you to the easiest site. The other place would be my guild site, but I would need to give permissions for viewing that and the best 'serial' type stuff is here:

http://www.rp-haven.com

Now...that's just the site, and there's lots of stuff there...I could give you character names and such but easier to point out the stories. These sometimes make fun of game stuff..or talk about it, and if it is unfamiliar, I'm sorry about that...but none of them should be too bad.

--------------------------------------------------------------

The first I'll point to is my character Habeas...he's Forsaken (the undead race that you can play...) and most people that play undead are all angsty and evil...blarg...hiss...evil. I try to keep Habeas happy and nice...but there's an inherent crushing sadness to a race of people that have essentially lost everything, including the ability to die once and for all.

http://www.rp-haven.com/book_page/habeas/letters_to_my_hopefully_dead_wife

This is a 'book' format. This first post is actually the first bit and then at the bottom you'll see the rest of the posts laid out numerically (the story is not quite done...it might be but it might not). Once you get to post (17)-Find the Eggs before they Rot!, also start reading this book by Habeas:

http://www.rp-haven.com/book_page/habeas/the_sun_in_my_eyes

By now I'd figured out how the book format works there and this is just the title page...the rest follows chronologically at the bottom.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now...those are a lot to read...but the biggest (and I'd say maybe best) writing I've done dealing with the game/characters is here:

http://www.rp-haven.com/book_page/xarahsha/apocrypha_the_lore_of_the_academy_of_esoterics

WARNING: Some of the posts/themes in this thread are more adult in nature...I'd say at most PG-13 bordering on R but they may also be rated if they get beyond it...it's NOT Disney though...just wanted to let people know this.

This is a collaborative work with one of my best real-life friends. This person writes as Xarahsha (the intro post) and Xistla, in the main stories. I write as Talashar (and Habeas makes a showing here too)...if they're not given a specific credits, then one or the other of us wrote it depending on who's posting but the whole story is collaborative and ties together.

Read it in the order given (Intro, then the posts in Intro in order, then Ascent, etc) and then after that it leads to a single post that may or may not end the story:

http://www.rp-haven.com/blog_entry/talashar/the_morning_after

------------------------------------------------------------------

Now onto just scattered writing...but most of it is in character so if you enjoyed those pieces and want more...or want to start with something light...try:

----------------------------------------

Horkin's blog...like all blogs, reverse order first to last:

http://www.rp-haven.com/blog/horkin

-----------------------------------------

Hoarkin's blog...like Horkin, but a gnome...and well, not like him at all really

http://www.rp-haven.com/blog/hoarkin

Should be like 5 posts there...

------------------------------------------

My newest character to speak, Yazid:

http://www.rp-haven.com/blog/yazid

(You'll recognize the avatar :D)

------------------------------------------

Anyway, that's what I've been up to. If for some reason you're jonesing for maybe a little more stuff by me, or stuff from my guildmates (ranging from awful to pretty darn good), let me know.

Latest Monarch Game

So I recently started playing on Monarch level to up the challenge, and found myself playing Tokugawa. My first city had cattle, three floodplain tiles, and two gold tiles.
Sweet! I think -- this'll give me a pretty good head start on money/research. I'm chugging along, sharing a continent with the greeks and the indians, and I'm noticing that I'm pulling WAY ahead of my competition up around 400 points to their 250/280.

Parked a couple cottages on the flood plains early on; founded another town with ANOTHER gold hill and four flood plain tiles. Put cotteges on them, too. So I'm just crankin' out the wealth, puttin' it all in research. I'm one happy clam until I realize I'm only like 40 turns into the game and I'm able to research Philosophy in like 7 turns.

Something's wrong.

I save the game, and restart, paying more attention to setup. Somehow, I selected Chieftan level (2/9) instead of Monarch (6/9). Took the wind outta my sails in a jiffy. Ooops.

DD

The 100 Wars War

Since the dawn of time, the English and the Byzantines have been at war. In this large world, only the Byzantines and English are their. And in their fight to colonize every continent, they fight to the death. The Byzantines were born to a small continent with little resources and space to expand, but, being a seafaring nation, quickly colonize on the British mainland. For the first 500 years living on the same continent, they where at peace, but the BYzantine leader, Empress Theodora, is a war monger, and, after establishing the Crusade Wall, a wall of 33 Crusaders and Fortresses which separates the main part of the british mainland and the colony, declared war. Soon Liverpool and Glastonbary are lost, Queen Elizabeth appeals to Theodora, and war is over, or so it seemed. The Byzantines still colonized, and the tension was still in the colony. Soon a small island colony south of the Bay of War, where most of the naval war was held, called New Constantinople, has been blockading a British city, New Liverpool. This Blockade lead to the 5th war between the British and the Byzantines. Soon the british on the south mainland fell, and the Byzantines rain supreme, and the british soon surrendered again.
Not 100 wars, but still alot

Prophets of Harappan Comments

Just to keep the flow smooth and the story thread clean, please post any comments you have in this thread. To make this story a bit different, i decided to use the totally awesome mod Rhyes and Fall of Civilization http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=204.

I've posted about it before, and it is truly amazing. Basically its a history simulator which means that instead of all the civs starting out at once they start at different times with different start conditions. It also incorporates a ton of new feature too many to list. Check it out, and you won't regret it.

Anyways, this story chronicles the rise of England starting in the Medieval age. France has already arisen as have Spain and the Vikings, but the Roman Empire is still there, just weak.

Finally, I'd like to thank my three main inspirations for this story History Dude over here at 1bc, Hemling over at civfanatics, and Sistul over at civfanatics. You've all written great stories, which really inspired me to do this. Thanks guys.

Now, on with the show!

Genghis Goes Ballistic

Wow. Raising a hand to shield his eyes, he found himself staggering a bit before the blast of furnace-hot air that greeted him. He resisted the urge to tug at the neck of his three-piece suit. That was the culprit, after all. Knowing how futile it was—first, because his shirt was heavily starched, and second, because everyone was watching him—was enough to make him resist. He was all too conscious of the looming stage in front of , the towering large screen projector blocking his view of the teams of reporters waiting just on the other side. When he circled around the back and climbed onto the podium, he knew how they already wanted to look at them. The crazy, irrelevant, forgetful old professor that with thinning, salt-and-pepper hair, wandering through deserts to dig up pottery shards, and waste away researching the only thing more uninteresting than his own life. It was obvious how they wanted to pin him. And thus the suit, and the big to-do.

In another moment, he was there. He waited a moment for the chopper to finish cutting overhead towards the landing pad. Remarkably, it was silent—and having caught the emblem on its door, so was Richards. In turn, seeing him onstage brought the whole crowd to a hush. In the background, the roughly two dozen officials from around the globe perked up expectantly in their seats behind him. His head spun, and he looked out over the crowd. Camera lights flickered from red to green. Impressive crowd for the middle of nowhere. He shuffled his papers. Solid green now. He cleared his throat, flushed slightly, and found himself shrinking away from his moment of professional glory. Fumbling quickly through his coat pocket, he chose to say nothing, and instead simply a produced a flat, silver, coin-like object the diameter of his fist. There was a collective gasp as the large screen projector showed a close up of the bas-relief hawk head dominating its face.

Confident, he leaned into the microphone and said:

“We are pleased to announce something to announce something beyond even our wildest imaginations. Since I saw a post about easily wining a duel at Immortal level, I thought I’d try it at Prince. Played as Gandhi while the AI turned out to be Louis XIV. So, the game type was “Duel”, custom continents, with random number of continents. No barbarians. Epic speed.

It turns out that there were two continents: <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />India alone on one and France alone on the other. India had two small offshore islands; France had one (just ice surrounded by water). After development, India had 50.5% of the land, France 49.5% Discovery of the other continent had to await Optics and the use of Caravels.

The long development era was fairly tedious. I wound up with 11 cities and three of the religions along with their shrines. France had 11 cities (including one on the ice flow) and the other four religions with their shrines. In each nation, each city had all of that nation’s religions. I thought I’d been doing pretty well, but when France discovered me (!) they were ahead in score (about 100 points – I’m referring to the score at the lower right of the screen), had about 5 more techs than I had, and of course had Optics before me. (I was just getting it). France got significantly more wonders than India. Indeed, Delhi was only 5th of the top 5 cities, with French cities taking spots 1 to 4. Contact was made in the early 1500s.

There Will Be War

At first, India tried to compete peacefully with France. However, it soon became clear that a war eventually was imperative. First, France continued to increase its lead in score. (There were moments of hope. In 1645 and again in 1696 India passed France’s score, but then France began to clearly pull away.) Second, in terms of culture of cities, Paris beat Delhi; Lyons beat Bombay, and so forth. It seemed likely that France would walk away with the win if India did nothing. (Indeed, much later in the game I was worried that France might still get a culture win when Paris reached legendary culture – the first time I had seen this.) Louis never permitted Open borders or traded world maps.

Of course I focused on navel and military research, and explored the French continent with a caravel. The French did not come exploring, having turned around once they found the India continent. As a result, India got the navel movement bonus for circumnavigating the world. I needed Galleons to invade, and so bided my time, driving for tech and building up military units.

By the time I felt ready to invade it was the early 1700s. My first expedition had two frigates with four galleons carrying 11 units. Louis’ attitude was never better that it was just before the invasion – “cautious”. Different state religions, you know.

The rise of Cyrus!!!

I am about to start a one city-challenge! BEGINNING

The Divine Emperor surveyed the city of Beijing. The place was ideal - the Yellow River provided his people with fresh water, and right to the West was a natural rice field, which would feed many and let the people multiply. To the Northeast lay a deposit of a kind of stone he knew was well suited for construction. Once the wisest men of the tribe had found out a way to effectively extract it, they would start putting it to good use.

A messenger arrived. The Divine Emperor recognized the man. It was Tien, one of the fastest runners that had followed the party of warriors which had set out to explore the surroundings.

-Exalted Emperor, I bring a report from the scouting trek. The site we have colonized in your great wisdom is on a peninsula, with the sea to our North, South and East. In the West there is a huge mass of land. There, we found many things. New crops and animals which make good eating. However, on our way we encountered strange peoples of pale skin and round eyes. One in the Southwest, lean, dark-haired, fair-limbed ones calling themselves Helleni. Another in the Northwest, a people with long, blonde hairs and bears, and a most raucous manner. These call themselves Teutoni.

The Divine Emperor withdrew to his chambers to contemplate these things. Beijing was a fine start, but with its population growing as it did, he knew it could not sustain them for ever. After a night of contemplation, he returned to his throne room the next day to make an announcement for his assembled underlings.

-People of Beijing! Our scouts have reported of strange tidings. In the West, there are great treasures we would be wise to claim for ourselves. However, there are also strange peoples there, whose intentions we cannot possibly know. Therefore we must be vary, and prepare for the possibility that they be hostile. I want one out of every ten males to take up the club, and the rest to feed them and see to their needs so that they can focus fully on training the martial arts from now on.

Peter of the Russians

this is a celebration of two things--Window Mode! which allows me to more rapidly switch between you goobers and civ4. and the increase to 1 gb of RAM. the game now works better in the modern era of the Earth 1000 AD map than on a small map when i had 250 mb.

Terra Map
Huge
Peter of the Russians (Philo, +100% GPP, Exp, +2 health)
Random Sea Level
Noble
Epic

As you can see, decent spot, hills, sheep, silk, village.
