Raging Barbs, for example, would require us to have quite a military build-up during the early game, making life hard for the political "doves" that might want to shoot for a more scientific or cultural strategy. Keeping our options open means more room for political diversity, means a better game

RE: Option Nominations
As a Human I'm only a few steps ahead of spear chucking apes.
Run for it, man, run, run!

I haven't played enough Civ4 to recommend anything, except that if we are playing at a difficulty level that is pretty tough (as many seem to think Prince is), then we should be reluctant to remove options such as victory types or razing. In a pinch we may need to get slick or drastic and it would be hateful if we couldn't because of... optimism. You may get experience (up to 10 points) but none of it goes toward your Great General. If it did, I'd see some sense in Raging Barbs but still I'd not be too thrilled about it.

As for Dgames, you'll catch on pretty quickly I think. There's a lot more than just government. There's a whole role playing element which some people focus soley on. There's opportunity to be involved in press, religion, story telling, business (if you can figure out a good monetary system) or you can just try and run for office and have a say in the government. The concept is pretty cool but the more people involved, the funner :P it is.

RE: Option Nominations

Help with what? Try it out, when you get a promotion from fighting a barb, check it out and see if it moves. I could be wrong, but I don't remember ever seeing it change from fighting barbs.
The Philosphy of a DGame is fairly simple. The game is played by an elected representative and the key desicions are made by the participants or their elected representatives. There are many ways to do this, but in this particular case the elected player will be making a very large majority of the game decisions. I can send you some links by email to the DGame at Civilized with examples of a functioning DGame.

RE: Option Nominations

Where is that Great General Bar? I'd say that is a cool option then since all it does is allow permanent alliances.

I'd say, unless other factors will mitigate the raging barbs, it could be a thrill killer. For example playing on Warlord instead of Noble diff, making sure about a good start location, specifying a civ that is aggressive versus mostly all non-aggressive AI, etc.
ADDIT: Mongoose just gave me access to the DGame area, and I read through all the past polls. Sounds like quite a sweet game ya'll been putting together! Warlords! YEAH!
I don't fully understand the philosophy of a DGame, but if it were me setting up a game, if I were to have Raging Barbs I'd take it down one notch in difficulty, e.g., to Warlord's Difficulty. I think what everyone is thinking of is "locked alliances" but it doesn't appear to be an option (though it's probably availiable somewhere else). I would not be for Raging Barbs after playing a PBEM where that was a setting. Once the animals are gone, you will get wave after wave of barbs which will not allow you to improve the land around you unless you have a few military units per worker (or work group) until you expand enough to eliminate the problem of "spawning" in those FOW spaces, which will hurt your economy if done too quickly. Either way, your economy is severely hampered since you can't build enough cottages (and protect them) to get your science spending in order. It's "fun" for the first little bit until you realize that they just aren't going to let up, then it's just tedious. I think for a Dgame it could potentially kill it altogether. But, hey, that's just me.

RE: Option Nominations

Permanent Alliances provides the option to make such deals when the required tech is discovered. These are neato if you have a specific type of scenario you want to create, but for a general epic game they can be pretty constraining.

Even if you are playing on Warlord difficulty (not Noble) raging barbs means that you will have to build a ton of military and likely fall behind in Tech. Actually, this would produce an interesting tradeoff in which having the ally might alleviate the pressure from the barbs a bit.

RE: Option Nominations

Permanent alliances. :)

RE: Option Nominations

:DRaging Barbarians and complete kills!

RE: Option Nominations

Raging barbarians!

Option Nominations

Here are the available options.
