Now I am confused. I thought I understood that no one senator would be responsible for any particular aspect of the game. If this is true, then naming the seats as Mr Zig suggests would be horribly misleading. However, if I have got the wrong end of the stick, then it would seem sensible to name seats such that they reflect the responsibility they represent.:blink:

I think *everybody* is Industrious in Civ4. Forge and Factory are always at the top of my list anyway, and without sufficient Workers you're just not going to be competitive. So here's the five I'd like to suggest:

[b]Expansion[/b] (Settlers, Culture, occasional "military flipping" of a nearby city)

[b]Infrastructure[/b] (Workers, Improvements, Economy)

[b]Military[/b] (Barracks &c, Units, military campaigns)

[b]Religion[/b] (Temples &c, Missionaries, religious campaigns)

[b]Research[/b] (Libraries &c, 110% research would be nice)

Perhaps in drastic times (or indeed, just prior to drastic times) a Military candidate might run for a non-Military seat and color the Senate in war paint. On the other hand, if a military campaign dwindles and our production is going to waste for too long, there could be an Infrastructure revival, with warmongers being run out.

I think it would be easier to keep track of everything if we attach at least [i]some[/i] meaning to these Senate seats. Could be that's just me... [url=http://planetsmilies.net][img]http://planetsmilies.net/alien-smiley-145.gif[/img][/url]

Zig, one of the other options I considered was using the 5 original Civ3 traits - Religious, Industrious, Expansive, Scientific, Militaristic. Would that be suitable or should they be closer to Civ4 specific areas of responsibilities?

The 5 tribes - Gaul, Welsh, Scots, Brittons, Cisalpina - are noted and will be included in the poll when it is run.

Hmm, havent (cant use apostropies it seems, a small line opens at the bottom and it asks for a FIND order...) been reading this too closely, maybe tonight. My suggestion would be to have 5 game-related seats to highlight what the candidate thinks he specializes in. Offtopofhead: culture, religion, science, military, um, and another one... Or expansion, research, economy, warfare, um, and another one.

These *should be* fluid. If there is a conflict pending, it would be possible for e.g. the science candidates to become rejected for election by a certain % of abstain votes, though it will take someone else to figure out how to get 2 or 3 military specialists elected...

I think this would far better make senators representatives of the people. Please note that I'm not suggesting that there will be different functions attributed to different senators: once elected, they'll all do the exact same thing. Except that we'll know where their hearts lie. :)

There hasn't been much discussion on this topic lately, yet there has been no consenus either.

I am prepared to open a poll with the following options:

Districts - A, B, C, D, E
Wards - 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th
Houses - Warmax, Zyn, Olaf, Scorpius, Terminal
Clans - Hill, Grassland, Coast, Forest, Lake
Abstain - Other

I will wait approx. 24 hours for further nominations and then start a poll. The poll will run 72 hours. I had considered starting the poll immediately but I would like to allow some time for further nominations. I had considered running the poll at the same time as the Presidential elections. I would like to conclude the poll on this so that the naming of the Senate is decided before the Presidential elections; that way if the position of President is uncontested we can open up Senate campaigns immediately.

As someone who has fond memories of the last DGame, I certainly support the original idea for the names of the senate. As for the McNulty seat, I shy away from this honour, as I intend to try to participate as much as I can in this DGame as I did in the last, and behave myself more honourably as well.

It really doesn't matter to me whichever is used. However, for somebody who was around to see some (if not most) of those people in action, it's pretty interesting to see houses named after them. Both choice are original, but one is just more Community related then the other...

If I had to choose, I would choose the version Mongoose proposed.

Crikey, I did not intend to cause such an uproar. My first post was a simple observation and suggestion. My second post was [i]mostly[/i] in jest, hence all the smileys (though I generally don't like hearkening back to the "good ol' days" in public). There is no need for a poll (oh how I dread the thought). It seems like most either don't have a problem or they like the idea Mongoose proposed so just go with it already.

Man, have you picked a tough battle.

Sure you can hark back to the past. Whether you call it cronyism or a tribute depends upon your point of view and your history. I agree with you Jerm, but it's not worth getting worked up about a few names. If they reflect a glorious past, now lost to all but the old and the wise, then so what? Let them have their nostalgia if it comforts them; let the old names be glorified: it happens in history. Those of us who were not there, who know nothing, shall remain ignorant of any deeper meaning or reflection but in time's fullness it matters not a jot.

I'm not against honoring the past [i]per se[/i], it is just that I cannot personally relate to these things so well as I have never really lived in one locality, city, town, whatever, for more than 6 years sum. We could just use the major names like House of Welsh, House of Gaul, etc. Hey, if you guys want to live in the past, that is fine with me... (I feel a campaign speech coming on...). I won't be the one to rain on your nostalgia parade :P.

I think the Celtic names would be fine. But I like the old-timer/former super-active 1BC member totems better. It just gives it more of a personalized One Big Community feel I guess.

We'll have plenty of other opportunities to use lots of neato Celtic words and names.

As I understand that both McNulty and mr. Longpants are still active members, I think it would be better to name the Senate seats after those who are no longer with us. I like the idea though :)

What is the complication, you ask? (I heard ya!)... Have a look at the names on the list jerm linked to above. Does anyone really want to try and remember the spelling for those names every time you have to type them out?

As for the good old boy cronyism... is it such a bad thing? Not from a crony's seat.

I don't have a big problem with it, it's just that I don't know who any of those people are (except for TC and the occasional visit from Warmax) and I doubt most others in this game do either. Senate Naming Idea

Instead of referring to the separate Senate seats as numbers (i.e. Senate Seat 1, Senate Seat 2..), I thought it would be fitting to pay homage to those who meant so much to the 1st Dgame (and are no longer around much, if at all) by naming the Senate seats after them.

For example, If I were a Senator, instead of being referred to as mongoose201 Senator 1 (or some such), it would be much cooler to be mongoose201 - Senator - House of Warmax. hehe... I want everyone to say that aloud to themselves and try to tell me it doesn't sound cool. :D

Anyway, I think I've come up with 5 likely names... Perhaps the oldtimers could either agree or suggest others:

House of Warmax (Warmax was the first Minister of the Interior and had a long and distinguised Dgame service record)

House of Zyn (Zyn pretty much rescued the game after early delays/impeachments by leading our upstart civ as President)

House of Olaf (Olafs was the Dgames journalist and made every single story seem more important just by reporting it)

House of Scorpius (Scorpius was the first Minister of Finance and Science and was very active in both the Dgame and regular board.

House of Terminal (Terminal Civ-er was very active in the Dgame and regular board and was one of the most active of the role playing members)

Anyway... Just an idea that might spruce things up..

Agree or disagree with concept/names?
