Both times that I was surprise attacked I lost 2-3 major cities, but within 30 turns I was able to regain my lost cities and take a few of theirs for the keeps. I was close to winning by domination near the end, but ended up setting my culture to 70-80%, built Rock N Roll, Hollywood, and Broadway in my three culture centers, set all three to culture production, and also hurried the Eiffle Tower with a great engineer.

It was easy to keep up in science the entire game, I focused on producing Great Artists and had 3+ of them in my three culture centers.

If you wanna see how badly I dominated the game, open up my save file I posted earlier in the thread.

I wasnt able to win by diplomacy, but I Cold have taken the game any other way.

RE: August 2006 GOTM

This was a game that worried me many times. Being as we were at the middle of the map made it a challenge. Not having gotten to horses at all was a PAIN...no one would trade them. My major war (against Greece, not started by me) was a rifleman/cannon war, with elephants for mopping up weak troops.

Wiped out the Greeks because they attacked me. Had a simply wonderful relationship with the Malinese all game long. Had great relations with the Arabs but sadly they were too close to me and the weakest. I ended up taking them out to get votes.

Toward the end, the Russians and Incans went into a permanent alliance, suddenly placing me in a VERY bad predicament. These guys were technically equivalent to me and building a spaceship faster than I could, eventually getting ahead of me in tech.

I was going to lose...

So I raced for the UN, built it, held one election. SEVEN votes short! grrr

I waited for a few turns...just before the next round of elections, I invaded the Incans, attacking Machu Pichu within one hex of my border. It was a huge, cultural powerhouse. I would not be able to keep it, so I razed it...size 17 city...boom.

Then I desperately fended off the Incans and the Russians as they moved to avenge themselves...vote came up...Because of the deaths of millions of Incans, my population percentage had gone up...won the vote, even though fully half the world DESPISED me.

Interesting game. Ness totally killed my hopes for a win :D

RE: August 2006 GOTM

The two submissions above are accepted. Problem was, I was away for 3 days from Sunday so didnt have much time to try and finish it. Result was a rushed game - will do better next time. :)

I actually came close, had a permanent alliance with Catherine, and was ahead in tech all game. I had one legendary city (my capital) but realised I wasnt going to get another 2 to that status in time, tried diplomatic victory (having built United Nations), but Alexander kept voting for the other guy (the Incan), so I couldnt do that, so went for the space race. Nearly made it, was 3 turns away from building the last piece when Mansa Munta went and beat me to it. :( Close but no cigar as they say.

RE: August 2006 GOTM

I got a bit sloppy trying to do it all in a day, and made a few mistakes. My aim was a cultural victory even though it's prolly easier and more profitable (pointwise) to go for diplomatic. I just thought it'd be interesting since people (or Scipio really) had been asking about Cultural. Anyway, third city I founded got raized by barbs :(...I screwed up bigtime in wonder building and went for the 100% Culture rate far too soon. If you ever try Cultural, don't do this before you've got access to broadcast towers! I will give my reason in a moment. Last night around 2a.m I downloaded the program and played some of the game. I went to play this morning and I didnt like that it was getting slower. So I rebooted my computer to factory settings and then reinstalled the game. Presto instant speed gratification. So I was playing againa today and actually had a bit of an audience of my friends and my wife(Whom I got hooked into civ) We went outside for our smoke break . I heard some banging and clicking. When we come back inside I find my 1 year old daughter sitting at my computer desk and my civ is now at war because she declared war on alexander which whom was friendly towards me. Realizeing I got the smallest army due to the fact of my certain stratagy , it was hard for me to repel alexander. I started with 6 unit of which were comprised of 4 achers and 2 warriors verse his 7 axemen,3 warriors and 5 archers. I did manage to capture one of his cities and recapture on he took from me. Just when I dedicated all my troops to one side of the map huyuna capac declares war on me and immeadiately takes 1 of my level 3 cities. So to make a long story shot I ended up getting 2 cities taken from me and gained 3 for a total of 1 surplus. But 10 turns later alexander declares war on me and I only had 2 archers. So I decided to quit . All because of my baby daughter. Good story huh.

RE: August 2006 GOTM
Rishbhav (8/15/2006)
when I try to load it it says "This game has been locked to make sure the assets in you MODS folde have not been changed" and then exits. As I understand it this is basically what "lock modified assets" does; lock the assets as they are at the time of creation so they can't be altered later in the game....which would make perfect sense in a competitive game like this. There's precious little to compare if people could use mods that speed up research for instance.

RE: August 2006 GOTM
ironbreaker_23 (8/16/2006)
Oh another question. Just curious.
I'm not sure if you are asking why "technically" them map is the same, or what the "reasoning" is behind it being the same map.

So, I'll answer the "technical" part first: The map is the same as it was before because you are loading the same save file as before.

As for the reasoning behind this: The GOTM is a contest between board members. To be as fair as possible, the same map/savefile needs to be played by all to help negate ambiguity in scoring. This way, the high score wins, instead of having to take all kinds of other factors into consideration.

Yes, it's the same for everyone. That's why you need to have the file.

The settings are listed so that you will know what they are before you play. Some people like to know.

As for your previous post, you can change the leadername to whatever you want.

RE: August 2006 GOTM

Oh another question. Good luck! :)

RE: August 2006 GOTM

I love a good challange.
