Let's look at the final scores vs. screenshots. Rish got the highest score because he conqured the entire continent. Tiger got a lower score because he conqured less of the continent. I conqured even less than both of them and I lost the game (though only because of a permanant alliance created by two rivals but I still could not have won the space race). The logical conclusion to this is that the more you war, the more chances you have to win and with a higher score. This doesn't mean you can't win without warmongering early in the game, but it does seem that your score will be much lower if you don't.

RE: November 06 GOTM

Well, I would say that you have to know how to war well, if just to set yourself up. For example I consider myself a builder at heart but that was keeping me from doing well on Noble. So I went into "boot camp" playing as the Mongols and the Aztecs to get a feel for war. Now I'm not really a warmonger persay, but I do take out anyone who infringes on my builder supremacy :D

RE: November 06 GOTM

I didn't play this one, but this is in reference to Jerms comments, since there isn't a whole lot of Civ4 discussion going on here....

Do you necessarily have to be a warmonger? Or is it just that you have to wage war early on, to a limited degree to set your self up for the future, to both weaken one or two opponents and expand your nation's territory when you have run out of room to peacably do so?

I don't consider myself a warmonger, In all my days of Civ playing, I've only had one military victory in a single player epic game and that was way back in Civ2. Butt in every game I've been successful in, I've almost always engaged in offensive war, and sometimes I even start the wars unprovoked when the situation calls for it. Does that make me a warmonger? :)

RE: November 06 GOTM

Lol, I won't have time to play it. Even to get other victories other than conquest/domination, you have to be a warmonger, especially for those higher scores.

RE: November 06 GOTM

Yeah, I axe rushed the Incas and then used my super cossacks to clean up the Romans which gave me a clear rise. I'd have won if Rome and the Incans didn't create a permanant alliance and then attack me. I brought the Inca down to one city but that city was on the other continent. Not to mention it took away vital science spending while I had to fight them. I lost the space victory by about 20 turns due to the game ending. All I had to do was to get the engine finished but I didn't get the final tech researched in time to build it. Oh well, there's always next month.

The key to a space race victory seems to be early conquest. In retrospect, I should have focused militarilly early on and wiped out the Inca. Then build up military again and severely cripple, if not wipe out the Romans. By this time you'll have so many cities that you should be able to build units on the outer cities while focusing on building up your inner and most productive cities for the ship. Well, you live and you learn.

RE: November 06 GOTM

I threw in the mouse. :pinch:

I did have a nice start and then I waged a quick war with the Incans, took a couple of their cities and made peace. Then Rome attacked me, but I had to play defense for a while as his huge army committed suicide against one of the new Incan cities I had just taken. My Incan invasion force was able to march over in time to meet the Roman threat. After several turns, his army was pretty much eliminated, but he had weakened mine in the process. And then the Incans attacked me with about 20 units, retaking the other City. I had nothing to stop both them and the Romans, and neither would consider peace. I figured even if I survived, a space race victory was beyond reach... :crying:

RE: November 06 GOTM

Well I'm now back from Australia, so I'll see if I can complete the game in time.

RE: November 06 GOTM

I'm playing but I doubt I will beat Rish's score. I wiped them out by 500BC, taking their capital plus their other 2 cities with axemen. Gave me a very good start to the game. Mind you, I got lucky, popping 2 free techs early, one of which was bronze working. :)

RE: November 06 GOTM

Just finished a very successful war against the Inca and I think I have enough cities with high production that I'll be able to do decently. My focus has been on building up an army so I can grab my neighbor's cities but now I'm shifting to reducing maintainance and unhappiness as well as keeping ahead in the science race. At some point I'll just go straight to the Apollo project and only research what I need for the win. Don't have a lot of time to play and next week will be hard with Thanksgiving. I hope I can finish in time.

RE: November 06 GOTM

Nice job, Tiger! How do you play that so quick?!

Started it last night and got a good start (though keep in mind, my good starts are probably semi-decent ones for others! :P ). Anyway, this was the first game I've ever played that I popped a Settler from a goodie hut!

I'm getting ready to go to war for a couple of resources... ;) I'm having trouble with Health in this game. :hehe:

RE: November 06 GOTM

Just finished mine. You may post the screenshot in the GOTM thread and then PM your final save (hopefully one just before victory) to me. Saves should be named as follows: [username]Nov06GOTM.Civ4SavedGame.[/b]

Good Luck

What are the rules?
The rules are fairly simple: Play fairly.

This means that you play within the spirit of the competition. As it is a friendly competition, we like to believe that there is no real incentive to cheat - but unfortunately, people do. Any persons found to be cheating will have their games removed, and there is a strong possibility that they will be banned from participating in the future.

Cheating includes (and is not limited to):

Playing the game multiple times and submitting the best effort (or even playing to get knowledge of the map, the replaying then starting the game again).
Using any sort of programs to edit the game or save files.
Altering the XML or using other mods that give you an unfair advantage.
Reloading an earlier save-file and replaying turns in a different way. The only time you may reload a save file is to start a new play session, and you must use the save file from the end of your previous session.

Also, if in doubt, ask. If you think you have found a new loop-hole or exploit, then we strongly suggest that you ask as to its legallity before you use it. The aim of the competition is not to see who can exploit the rules, and as such, we reserve the right to disqualify submissions based on exploits that are discovered later.
