Please disregard my dreaming of badges.

Badges!? BADGES!? We don't need no stinkin' BADGES!

When most CIV III players get BTS, they will remove almost all interest in Civ III, I think.

I like the simplicity of our GOTM and like that I can jump on an occasional multiplayer game without worrying about uninstalling an unofficial patch and later reinstalling.

Thanks for the work on badges, Mongoose. Ditto especially on creating GOTM games. I'm still looking for you to post some of those scores of your own. ;)

RE: GOTM Ranking System
Scipio Africanus (2/12/2008)
Hey, I've got a request for the 1BC GOTM procedure. Can we PLEASE use the CivFanatics "HOF" Mod for all future GOTM generations?
Right now BTS 3.13 is FULL of bugs. This HOF mod addresses most of them.

I have twice been unable to load the 1BC BTS GOTMS, most likely because I have installed other Mods folders (e.g., Grave's History in the Making Mod, my own "Scipio's Slow Down Mod," etc.). WHY the fricking thing would think that the creation of a NEW directory in the Mods folder constituted a "change in assets" that would be illegal for a straight up game, I have no idea. Bugs would be my first presumption. My second would be that the "Lock modified assets" function in the custom game window does not work right.

In any event, I've not had problems loading CivFanatics PBEMs generated in the HOF Mod, and those guys over there are inevitably gonna de facto support that Mod ad infinitum.
I've considered this in the past, but I want to keep these games as simple as possible to play (other than the fact that you can't get yours to load, obviously).
I think more people, especially those who are new to the process, will play if all they have the do is download the save and play, as opposed to loading a mod when they want to play the GOTM.
I wouldn't be opposed if someone wants to set up a game using the mod, but the main game each month should be mod free, IMHO. :)
Nuclearcow (2/12/2008)
I think it'd be cool to have a slight difference between the CIV III & CIV IV GOTM 'badges.' Something to indicate that you're a Corporal in CIV IV GOTM and maybe a SGT Major in CIV III, or whatever. Allowing someone to have both of those 'badges' or whatever they are called, on their profile.

Easy for me to say since 'Goose made these, huh? :P

I have been thinking about that off and on, and thought I'd post the suggestion finally.
Thanks for volunteering me for more work. :)
The current system came into effect because I was tired of making new images every month. The new ranking system is much simpler, and I think it integrates very well into the board. Also, the CivIII games are beginning to wind down, for the most part. If there is a resurgence in CivIII participation, I might be persuaded.
Also, it's not easy to put two images where the current rankings reside. The board software only allows for one image. Before the current system, I got more images there by using photoshop to stack them into the same image like this one:

However, this was some of the busy work I was trying to get away from. :P

RE: GOTM Ranking System

Hey, I've got a request for the 1BC GOTM procedure. I believe this might encourage further participation in the game, but Mongoose, this might be more work for you, so maybe you won't like it. hehe

1st for the winners, maybe a 1 star general patch to denote a 1 time winner. 2 stars for 2, 3 for 3, and up to you whether you want 4 as the top as 4 stars are probably most often associated in people's mind as the top, even though there were a few 5 star generals, at least in US history.

Anyways, the winner could be called anything, but as my other suggestion, what about something to denote the guys who have high scores, but NOT quite win it.. like say another patch/rank (whatever you call it) like Colonel, Major or something around there, for "top 3 finish" in GOTM. I would suggest this is a one month award and would go away when the next GOTM starts. So, last month on the BTS GOTM for example, rngdvo played a great game and had a very high score, but barely got beaten out. I think it'd be cool for him to have for a month something like a silver oak leaf like award on his profile for the next month that says something like "Colonel - top 3 GOTM finish" or SOMETHING like that. Maybe it's silly, but a medal for a month might encourage more players and maybe might get people who surf the board to see that on his postings and maybe it'll make them wonder what it is and gain interest that way. But, only as a temporary award as the 1 star - 5 (or 4 as preference) winner would remain forever unless upgraded with another win and star.

Thoughts?

RE: GOTM Ranking System

Military, and as Leo suggested, a rank symbol.

RE: GOTM Ranking System

The only issue with those ranks is both of those types are used for 'board' ranks. We have a mix of military and civ ranks as is...

I like the idea though. And it would get more participation in Games of the Month, I'd wager. People love having little thingies like that.

I'd recommend having a little rank symbol too...

So however you do it...assuming like the current bars...a little two-stripe symbol...the title...and whatever else

^

^..........GotM..........corporal

Like that maybe

And if you do Civ ranks, do it different than stripes...say a wagon from Civ 1 for the 'settler' symbol...anyway, sounds good. It was fairly simple in the beginning when there weren't any multiple GOTM champions, but lately, with more games under our belt and several multiple winners, it becomes obvious to me (the one that's working to make all these things come together;)) that we need a simpler system in place.

So... I am asking for your input on the following: We will go to a GOTM ranking system where you are ranked based on the number of GOTM's in which you have been the Champion. All GOTM (CivIII, Warlords, BTS) championships will be added together and you will receive a rank (and graphic insignia in place of the current ones) according to the number.

Now, we need to decide what names for the ranks. The two best possibilities would be either military ranks or the CivIV Difficulty Levels:

Victories

1 or 2: Settler/Corporal

3: Chieftain/Sergeant

4: Warlord/Sergeant Major

5: Noble/Lieutenant

6: Prince/Captain

7: Monarch/Major

8: Emperor/LieutenantColonel

9: Immortal/Colonel

10: Diety/BrigadierGeneral

11: SidMeier(added)/Major General

That should give you an idea. What do you guys think... and which would you choose, military or difficulty levels?
