Stayed up really late last night to try and finish, but still over 150 turns left of the game...

I'm #2 in the pecking order now, but my confidence was kinda shattered when I saw that Hannibal (#1) has more than 3x the military power than me! He owns the other land and is not one to be trifled with.

I think I needed to be a bit more aggressive early on, but Boudica was a real pain in the butt and kept me stuck in a war of attrition against her until I got ahead of her in tech and trounced her with Macemen.

At least I got Judaism and spread it to all nations on my land, that was a real money boost!

Not being able to trade techs was weird - but I'm only about 4-5 techs behind the leaders, and I haven't been able to exploit spies to their full potential either.

I think I'll get outpaced and end up with a space race loss, even though I'm on a mission to conquer my land now. I decided to go kick some butt and get some extra population for the next vote. Hannibal was next in score and was advanced, so I thought I'd go whup up on him. About a turn before I was completely ready to attack him, the diplomatic victory vote came up, so I had to push my attack a turn sooner than I wanted since I had missed the previous votes by only 20. I had 15 or so stealth pound away and had modern armor take 3 cities that same turn as the vote. I didn't have my modern jets set up for defense and took a beating on the last turn from his bombers, but it didn't really matter. Diplomatic victory after taking those 3 cities gave me 1 vote to spare. Yikes! Closer than I had hoped, but it didn't matter, I suppose.
A very beatable score this month. I just researched Replaceable Parts and Hannibal has just completed the Apollo Program, while Isabella has built the UN. So, I fear this one will end in a disappointing loss, but an enjoyable, if not informative, one.

I've never really played without tech trading and you definitely have to change your mode of thought from the very beginning of the game. It makes the Espionage aspect of the game absolutely paramount to your success, especially if you are not the overly warmongering type.
RE: February 2008 BTS Game of the Month

I played several hours combined yesterday over about 3 sessions.
I dropped my capital exactly where the settler started. If you keep the forests there, it has decent production, but I concur with Jerm that its not a beast of a production city like we had in last month's GOTM.

At the start, I sent my warrior down to grab the south goody hut and had him keep exploring down there. I felt robbed when someone showed up north and nabbed the goodyhut just north of my city border. Ah, well, that was my own stupidity in not sending the warrior up there.

In exploring, I shortly ran across Boudica (spelling?) whose capital was defenseless and no units immediately in sight, so I declared war, and sent my warrior directly in and destroyed her. A very early war and... that was easy. I did get Stonehenge, the Great Wall and the Pyramids before expanding with my 1st city. I seem to do that a lot lately. I don't think I've built any wonders since as someone on the other continent has been more advanced consistently.

The Romans had a city on my border loaded with units, so it was an arms race and I must have done well because he never actually attacked me. When I had trebuchets, I built about 10 of them and hit that city 1st. I went on to crush the Romans completely. 30 turns afterwards or so, I went after Cyrus, who had built several cities close around my borders. I destroyed him all but 2 island cities.

I'm now debating whether or not I keep war-mongering on my island. I think I will. :P

This one is definitely not a super-easy one with so many civs in close quarters. I'm pretty big now and fairly advanced, but behind several others in techs on the other continent.
RE: February 2008 BTS Game of the Month

I've been playing :)
The silks and flood plains make the capital a great commerce city but kills it's production. I built the wall which gave me the GS. Sent it to the Celts so I could tech steal. My first goal was to eliminate the Native Americans. I attacked as soon as I got Axes but they were able to save their capital from me when the Incans attacked. I used that as an opportunity to grab that annoying Incan city they were able to plop down on some iron. As I was gearing up to take Native America out, they attacked me (the nerve). During peace time, they had been able to get two more cities in that tight space they had so I took one and raized the other but once again had to leave their capital when yet again, the Incans took the opportunity to invade again. It was pretty stupid on my part since I had four axes guarding the old Incan city and they had a stack of chariots and a Cat or two. Finally in the middle ages I was able to take that capital of theirs with some Maces and Knights and the Native American civilization was no more. It's been an arms race with the Celts and Incans ever since.

I seem to be way behind in tech though I'm finally catching up. A civ on the other continent kept beating me to the wonders (which was a shame considering our traits) and I didn't get many. Our continent only has Hinduism and it was founded by Cyrus. The prize is his capital but I'm stuck with lots of outdated units (though not obsolete).

Also found the other continent and I'm in a neck and neck race with Hannibal for first place. I've got the most cities so I think my strategy will be to go for Mining Inc. and get a space race victory which also means maximizing research. Argh! This is tough.
I think I'll win the game but not likely the GOTM. :(

RE: February 2008 BTS Game of the Month

My civ time is all but gone. (looked like fun in the January Game) ;)

Traits:

Start Position:

Hint: Decisive action with your Warrior could open up some additional room....

Victory Conditions

All Victories have been enabled and all will be accepted

Highest Normalized Score in any of the accepted Victory Conditions will be declared BTS GOTM Champion for February.

When you complete the game, take a screenshot of the Victory screen where it lists your leadership counterpart in history. You may post the screenshot in the GOTM thread and then Email your final save (hopefully one just before victory) to me. Saves should be named as follows: [username]Feb08BTS.CivBeyondSwordSave

The Email address to send the GOTM is my username @1bcciv.com ... Of course, instead of "my username" of course I mean the name I post with here at 1bc.

Submissions will be accepted until March 10th.

Everyone please follow the instructions above: Post your score screenshot here in this thread and email the save to me. This makes it easier to determine how everyone stands and what the current standard is scorewise if I get held up in the verification of save files. Thanks.

What are the rules?
The rules are fairly simple: Play fairly.

This means that you play within the spirit of the competition. As it is a friendly competition, we like to believe that there is no real incentive to cheat - but unfortunately, people do. Any persons found to be cheating will have their games removed, and there is a strong possibility that they will be banned from participating in the future.

Cheating includes (and is not limited to):

Playing the game multiple times and submitting the best effort (or even playing to get knowledge of the map, the replaying then starting the game again).
Using any sort of programs to edit the game or save files.
Altering the XML or using other mods that give you an unfair advantage.
Reloading an earlier save-file and replaying turns in a different way. The only time you may reload a save file is to start a new play session, and you must use the save file from the end of your previous session.

Also, if in doubt, ask. If you think you have found a new loop-hole or exploit, then we strongly suggest that you ask as to its legallity before you use it. The aim of the competition is not to see who can exploit the rules, and as such, we reserve the right to disqualify submissions based on exploits that are discovered later.

Good Luck all...
