I would like to thank my agent, the production team at Fireaxis, 1BC management and Mr Fluffy, and I accept this wonderful hand-crafted pewter statuette on behalf of them all.

It is, of course, an honour and a privilege for you to be here and listen to my self-congratulatory rhetoric but, ha ha, you're here now so you're trapped. The doors have been closed and locked and no one will be allowed to leave until the applause is at staggering, nay, deafening volume.

I would love to give you all the benefit of my brilliance and unbeatable game strategies but, unfortunately, I have forgotten them. I get very confused these days. I seem to remember nuking some Alphans but that can't be right can it? There were definitely some Zulus involved but I think I accidentally killed them somehow. They were yellow, I remember that. Then there was a blue lot and a green lot. I think the green lot got all uppity so me and the blue guys went and kicked the living crap out of the buggers. I was white, I think, but had redcoats, so I don't understand. It's all rather hazy and distant.

Oh yes, I think we were all the same religion or something and I gave another blue lot (diffent blue this. See, confusin' innit?) their city back wot someone (the greenies?) had stole, and they were so grateful everybody voted for me in some weird election. I think there were some purple guys somewhere. Who the hell were they?

Anyway, it was all a bit of a surprise I can tell you, but don't let that stop you clappin' and telling me how brilliant I am.

Right, where's the booze?

Well, I started this near the beginning of the month but only just got round to finishing it. :w00t: Ran out of time in the middle of the month! And it did [i]really[/i] bog down late on, which slowed my progress.

Not quite a winning score but, oh well. Also this can only count if we allow reloads due to Civ crashing - giving errors about display drivers?? Had to reboot and was not paticularly happy.

Took plenty of time to post my result so I guess I might as well make it worth the wait:

After the way my game panned out I now [b]fully[/b] agree on the annoying nature of having Permanent Alliances as a prospect in the later game. Though I had the opposite experience with them. After having dropped the delicate early game period like an expensive vase :pinch: ...I managed to recover and was sitting pretty at the top of the pile, enjoying myself immensely when Persia (#2) and Babylon (#3) researched the right tech and decided to merge into one big all powerful [i]permanent[/i] :( super civ. Easily overtaking me with one single press of the enter key!!! They proceeded to race ahead in technology with their combined resources and I had no chance in keeping up with them.

As I knew I had very little chance of anything but a military victory I was forced into a race with them to conquer the "third party" lands. Literally a race with me coming in from the west coast and them driving across the land in the other direction. Very interesting as we met almost simultaneously in the middle in a dead heat, fighting for the last couple of cities! My favourite point in the game came when one city switched hands and was held by [b]4[/b] seperate civs in the space of [b]8[/b] turns!! Originally Aztec -> conquered by Persia -> the honourable Persians gifted the city to the Americans -> then my even more honourable Cavalry stopped the madness, stuck a flag down and called it Plymouth!! :D

When it came down to me and them, I told them the world just wasn't big enough for that! ...and it turned into an absolute gore fest. :crazy: One of their counter attack turns lasted long enough for me to leave the room and have them still attacking when I came back some time later. A few epic turns in and I was on > 2000 war weariness and was eventually facing a rediculous amount of unhappiness. And [b]I[/b] had the Statue of Zeus!! I had to plough on regardless though and eventually broke them, winning in 2003.

After [b]3[/b] turns of fighting:

Ouch!!! (No prizes for spotting where I built the Globe Theatre in that mess)

(Very :P) Long story short, I think I would have won this much earlier and more easily (SO much work!!) if they hadn't gone and merged on me. I haven't had to bludgeon my way to victory like that for a long time.

Is "my username" YOUR username (Mongoose) or mine, and do I have to rename the file tonesApril08.Civ etc.,etc.? It's not clear to me.

Also I must confess I was so surprised to actually win the diplomatic vote, I don't have a save for that year, only the subsequent (post victory) year or one about, I dunno, 20 years earlier. Which one will do, if either?

I feel like an idiot:pinch:

Wow, that's quite hardcore! Once, in a Monarch level pre-BTS game, I managed to win in the late 17th century by shocking and awing everyone to capitulation (which cut down on conquest times quite drastically), but usually I win by the early 19th century by the earliest.

Tones! Didn't see you here before! Well, congrats! I can't say I'm overly surprised, I knew I had managed to fudge the early game through a few inconclusive wars.

Now, if only Zigeuner could make a submission > 20,714 points, we could call it a Team Omega hat trick.

Okay, so its a game amongst friends and replays aren't allowed in the final score...

So THIS DOESN'T COUNT. But, I replayed it, with a bit more aggressive mindset.

A little bit different of a result, huh? :P Oh well, at the moment, Konrad is in 1st place, it seems. Is anyone else playing?

I'm all for occassional oddball games, with vanilla games in between. I like good old-fashioned Imperialism :)

As far as I see, the problem is that the scoring favours Domination victories. One would not necessarily have to do anything else than redefine what constitutes victory - for example, the one who gets the earliest victory wins, regardless of score and type of victory.

At least thats harder to get. I'd still rather have 2-3 GOTMs in a row with odd victory conditions. Cultural one month. Diplomatic another. That sorta thing.

I'm rallying for that option to drop from the GOTM options. At least for a few months. :D

I'm also trying my political activism to get domination removed from the options to win a GOTM. Almost all my wins have come via Domination.

You whupped me.

I went for wonders instead of expanding, which didn't work out well at all. I didn't realize exactly how close everyone was.

The Zulus attacked me early and kept it going for 1/2 the game or more. I got 6 Great Generals, which is kind of impressive for a short-game. This might have been a record number of generals in an Epic or Marathon game.

I would have LOST this game if it wasn't for that high annoying (my opinion) option of Permanent alliances. Itskind of acheater option in my humble opinion. I also got a Domination victory, in 1950. Since I'm complained a little about that 1 setting (which I worked to my heavy advantage) I'd like to see less Domination victories available in our GOTMs. Almost all winners have been via Domination. I'd like to see a cultural victory or diplomatic victory or something like that. 1 way to win and have it be in a rotating unusual way. My 2 cents. :D

I had almost forgot how it was to play an all-nighter of civ :)

I got quite badly bogged down in the middle ages, beset by two enemies at once. While I managed to defeat the Zulus in the late middle ages, I could only get properly rolling in the industrial age. I made a two-pronged research lunge to pick up both Mining Inc and Sid's Sushi. The result was predictable - with industrial output at perverse levels, none stood before my walls upon walls of infantry and artillery.
