I stress that this month I was just playing along for fun as my first effort only lasted about 50 turns until an axeman taught my lone archer what raging barbs really means. I'd never played raging barbs before so I under estimated the step up and found out the hard way... game(otm) over.

But game (not of the month) back on! :)

Since it seemed like great fun and I now knew the scale of task properly, I started over to play it through fully, with beefed up military, for fun. That's a whole lot.

The challenge in the early game was indeed to gauge just how secure you are, how much effort you can afford to allocate to long-term growth rather than short-term defence needs. I don't think I ever had more than 4 units actively defending a city, usually only 3.

The trick to effective city defence was, I realized after a while, not to wait for the barbs to come to you, but take the fight to them. If you sit in your cities, they will keep raiding tile improvements, and occasionally assault the city in force. I figure that every barb that shows up on the border will attack sooner or later, so I might as well go out and meet him on favourable terms. I don't know exactly how the barb AI works, but there seems to be a set chance to attack any adjacent unit belonging to a civ. So I go out, walking through defensive terrain, hoping to "provoke" them into attacking me when in it. They usually do sooner or later.

RE: May 2008 CivIV BTS Game of the Month

This is only my second attempt on a GOTM...
As I recently had my first success on Prince level, I downloaded this one just to give it a try.

And I can't believe I made it to my current time, AD 1200 or so !

I think I kinda overreacted to the barbarian menace lol
After I almost got eaten in the first turns, I kept producing units to get like 10 in each of my two cities :w00t:.
And I was micro-managing them like mad.

And until not so much time ago, I only got two cities. ha ha.

I was also quite surprised to see that 2 AI got eaten by the barbarians.
On the "Most powerful, most advanced civs bla bla" pop-ups, I can see that we are only 3 civs remaining.

It seems that the AI doesn't change its playing style facing raging barbarians.

I wasn't actually expecting this option to be a advantage for me !
:)

Anyway, I'm quite excited to think that this GOTM might be my first submitable GOTM !
eventhough my score won't reach the skies of all yours !

Anyway, thanks for this save, quite colorful so far !

regards,

RE: May 2008 CivIV BTS Game of the Month

:)

RE: May 2008 CivIV BTS Game of the Month
I invaded, took two cities, sent in the missionaries, made peace, and returned the cities. Founded Konstantinye (not Istanbul... stupid history-impaired game devs...) on the place where the settler started. Since my immediate production and defence tech needs were met, I started researching Theology to get the Apostolic Palace and go for a relatively early diplomatic win.

I founded Ankara to the northwest to link up the copper and the horseys, after which I built an axemen in both cities. Hardly had I done that before the barbarians started pouring in from everywhere. Ankara was very close to being lost, it probably would have if a particular barb would have attacked it right away rather than stopped to plunder a farm - that one turn was enough for reinforcements from Konstantinye to arrive. For a while, I was barely hanging on, using nearly all of my production output to build more axemen. After a while, I had a few ones with Combat I + II and Shock, which helped to take to the field against the barbs, allowing defence of tile improvements at minimal cost.

Eventually I reached a level of military efficiency which allowed me a berth to build Edirne to the west of Kosntantinye. I was lucky to get Horseback Riding from a goody hut, giving me horse archers as another defensive tool against the barbs which axemen are less effective against (such as other axemen).

Apparently my barb management was far more effective than that of other civs; I managed to stay on top in score almost from the beginning. The Inca didn't make it (causing the peculiarity of the Confucian holy city under barb control), and the Celts were severely behind the rest.

Long story short, for a diplomatic win with the Apostolic Palace, I needed to infiltrate every civ with Judaism, and I needed to spread it far enough not to have enough votes to win the election on my own (in which case the election never comes up), but still preferably be close enough to only need the votes of one other civ. The Babylonians and the Romans were a-ok with missionary work, but the Celts refused to open borders. I invaded, took two cities, sent in the missionaries, made peace, and returned the cities. Cool, huh?

Still, it eventually became the Celts that voted me to victory, them being most susceptible to bribery and flattery. They were far, far behind everyone else in tech, so I shared my secrets with them. The Romans, as is historically appropriate, attacked the Celts several times. Roman legions were decimated by walls of lead from the janissaries. The Romans were beaten back, and Celtic cities liberated. Boudicca appreciated mucho, eventually voting for me.

RE: May 2008 CivIV BTS Game of the Month

Heh, at the rate I'm playing I should be finished by June 1, 2009. One of the near neighbrs attacked me a couple times, but I've been buddies with other one from the beginning. At this point, I have a highly cultured but rather small (5 cities?) civ and whereas the leader who founded Judaism has rifleman I have Janissaries. Not sure what to do now. I have not distributed culture between that many cities so I'm not sure a cultural is really feasible, and also because I'm behind in Techs not sure I"ll be able to get UN.
