I built 30 cities in the New World, but most weren't very large and you can see that fewer but larger cities was much more important. I think in hind-sight, sending several boatloads over with workers to farm land and make cities bigger, would be smarter than spamming the New World with settlers like I did.

To me, the biggest challenge in this game was not kicking my neighbors' arses. :P I soooo wanted to. Especially France after they attacked me. Had to keep in mind that it would only make winning with these victory conditions harder. Did anyone think this, but kick their neighbor's butt anyways?

I founded multiple religions in my capitol before expanding and spammed missionaries out so I could have extra gold for the New World. The idea was to have my capital produce a ton of cash from those religious buildings and then drop Wall Street in my capital to double all that money. I was doing very well on money even after 30 cities in the New World alone. Since we're now sharing strategies... hehe... communism provides a much easier way to maintain the required money level.

RE: June 2008 CivIV BTS Game of the Month

Total New World population: 17,101,000

broken up as follows (city size in parenthesis):

Logrono(14): 1,618,000
Santander(16): 2,352,000
Palma(16): 2,352,000
Pamplona(11): 823,000
Vitoria(13): 1,315,000
Jaen(11): 823,000
Cadiz(1): 1,000
Asturias(16): 2,352,000
Zamora(10): 630,000
Almeria(8): 337,000
Valladolid(12): 1,051,000
Teruel(15): 1,963,000
Alicante(3): 21,000
Burgos(1): 1,000
Lugo(5): 90,000
Elche(2): 6,000
Mida(4): 48,000
Leon(13): 1,315,000

It's all about the big cities, seeing how geometrically the city population increases with city size. I managed to settle almost all of the southern New World continent and about half the northern, but most northern cities were very small by the time the game ended (the cities are listed by latitude, from south to north). Had I realized quickly enough to focus on bigger rather than more, I might have won. As well as founded the Sushi Co in the New World rather than the old; had I done that, I might have actually got it established there in time to affect the outcome of the game.

RE: June 2008 CivIV BTS Game of the Month

Impressive. Having put so much effort into colonising the New World I held on in the Old for nearly 100 years but, interesting though this was, the rules against losing even one city completely bugger your options. Eventually, after many many units and Great Generals died on both sides, Lahore fell, and that was that. The fact that I had a completely viable and well established colony of eight cities counts for nothing. I was at war with Louis XIV (he declared... he regretted it! :P) and after I'd taken two of his cities I thought I'd go for a third and then immediately get a very favourable peace deal as he was already wanting it. The third city I was lured into taking as he'd beaten me to the site by a few turns earlier in the game and I wanted back what was rightfully mine :D seemingly as a freebie!
Well I took the city and agreed the peace and everyone was happy. I garrisoned it on that turn only with the units that had movement left from the attacking army and nobody else was in range to join them. When you take a border city surrounded by your territory on one side and completely by your opponents on the other and you secure peace with that opponent you assume that temporary garrison will be more than enough. Wrong. I ended the turn and, unknowingly, my challenge for this month along with it as immediately the formerly amicable Montezuma appeared out of the fog engulfing Louis' lands with a monster stack and slaughtered the defenders easily! He didn't keep it but the damage was done. :(

...It was almost as if he knew. :alien:

Well I carried on regardless ...mainly because I was unaware I was out! :D Then I realized that the city loss rule, which I was aware of, also applied to the old world. Ouch!

I went on to get a population I was very pleased with, but Montezuma was laughing to himself all the while!
Right, now back to those who were less cavalier in their conquest of cities!!

RE: June 2008 CivIV BTS Game of the Month

1585 AD and hurrah, the poor old messenger does not have to hold onto his privates. It's unfortunate for him as messengers with good tidings seldom have their gonads chewed off by the queen's pet wolf. Everything has been going so well, with the other nations fighting between themselves and a veritable armada of galleons being despatched to harvest the riches of the New World. And now this wretched herald arrives with the depressing news that Hammurrabi of the Native Americans has declared war on our peaceful little country. What's a girl to do? Let the wolf have his tasty snack for starters - that'll cheer up the Royal Court. Then it's all the men to the walls and see how the SLIMEY BACKSTABBING TRICKSY UNDERHAND B*STARDS enjoy our latest form of entertainment for unwelcome visitors - getting shot.

RE: June 2008 CivIV BTS Game of the Month

I wonder if any one was backstabbed by Montezuma and was able to withstand him.
