Civ IV Lock up Issue Help

I have been having a major issue with my Civ IV game. It seems the more complicated the game, especially E-mail based games, the more likely it is to give me the Blue screen of death. (Locks up until I get the Blue Screen telling me to shut down and restart. )
I have the latest patch, re-installed the game, and upgraded my video drivers. It seems to do it at the very end of the turn, while the other 'nations' make their move. I play it via E-mail, and it's getting to the point where I can barely play the game if there is too much going on.
In another game, freshly started, where there is not much action, it seems fine....
I can generally play a normal game vs computer without issue, but play by e-mail, and it gives me fits.

I have turned down the graphics, shut down most every other background programs, I usually run a registry cleaner to make sure there is no errors, yet it continues to be a problem.

Help w/reinstallation

I was trying to install CIV but wizard froze on second disc. I restart the computer. I pop the second disk wizard douse not start. I pop the 1st disk it does not give me install option. It just says "play". I go looking for CIV folder on the comp but cannot find it, not does CIV show up in add/remove utility. Is there a solution? This is CIV w/out any expansions.

Windows Vista Issues

I am currently running Windows Vista RC 1 Build 5600. I was running XP before and did not have any trouble playing Civ 4. My graphics card is an ATI Radeon 9250 256mb card, I ran the patch updates for Civ 4 and made sure my card has the latest drivers and none of this seemed to work.

When I try to run the game is crashes and I get a blue screen that only stays on for a second or two and then restarts the computer, I'll try to write down what it says exactly.

I'm basically wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if I'll have to upgrade to a retail copy of Windows Vista or if someone knows what to do to fix this problem. Thanks in advance.

Direct IP Connection

I have my buddies IP address. He set up the room. I tried to join his match before lauch twice, then once after launch and we still could not get a game going through Direct IP Connection. Am I missing something? :hehe:

Installation Issue - Which Executable To Use

Hello all. I finally decided to give this game a try. So, I went all out and bought the gold edition and the sword expansion. I had a problem right at the end of the installation for both games, some kind of windows firewall list update error. The games still appear to have installed fine, but I didn't get a folder in my start menu / program group list or a desktop short-cut. So, now I am confused because I am not sure which executable I should use to get the full content of all 3 games. There are executables for civ4, warlords, and sword in the various directories, and each one can launch. Which one should I be using to get the content of all 3 games when I start a new game? My guess would be the one for sword, but I just want to make sure.

Game crashes

Alright, well in short, I recently receive Civilization 4; Beyond the Sword, the first few games I played as some of the newer civs they introduced and then I went back to good ole' England. After this I went to Rome, this is where it gets interesting, I was moving an Attack Sub when the game crashed. It gave me two messages, one saying the game has asked Runtime to end the program in an unusual way, and the other telling me the graphics failed to load. I thought it might be just a glitch in the game, but when I went back I played a couple of turns and then the game crashes and I receive the same two messages. I then decided it would be best to start another game. I was Rome this time and I was doing fine until I hit the 100- Turns. At turn 94 the game crashes again. I am now saving every turn, and the game keeps on crashing. If there is a patch or a way to fix this please tell me. I will get a screen shot and the messages on this post later today.

Can't Get 1.61 Patch to Work

I downloaded it into the Civ IV folder, but when I try to execute it, it says, "The setup has detected that no version of Civ 4 is installed. This update requires that a previous version of the application be installed."

This makes no sense. The game is installed, I've been in it, but want the startup to run more smoothly and a Earth scenario that's normal, not huge.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Black Land revisited

I have re-installed CivIV and once again run into the black land issue, where the terrain is all in black. When I first had this problem I searched the net and found a solution (this was a couple of years ago) where someone suggested doing something in a file where the map was set at "1" or "0" or something to that effect. I am a pooter idiot and I don't remember if it was in a the map editor file or what. maybe bitmap? Can anyone help me with the black land issue? I have the regular Civ IV game from 2005. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I cannot Load a Saved Game

hey i just got civ 4 complete today on dvd (currently its only available in europe or through import, i got it import), when i try to patch the game it says it cannot find the install and just quits, when i try to auto patch in game it says i have the latest version even though i know i don't, the directory is E:\Program Files\2K Games\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Complete

and the system specs are

os: windows vista ultimate x86

cpu: intel core 2 quad q6600

mobo: xfx nforce 680i lt sli

vid card: geforce 8500 gt

can someone please help me, its still at rtm versions and i really got to patch.

Out of Sync Errors when playing on LAN

We bought Civ IV for our entire family and just recently updated everyone to Warlords, then Beyond the Sword, I have installed all the latest patches on all 5 of our games however we have been having a lot of trouble with sync issues while playing togther through our LAN.

Three of the computers can stay sync'ed up no problem, but if we add either of two of the computers to any game it throws sync errors. (It is very specific to my computer and our youngest sons computer; our two older sons and my SO can play together with no problems.) It does not matter who hosts the game either, the sync issues on the 2 systems persist. None of us have any trouble playing single player games at all. None of us play online games so I am not sure if that is working. I have never read about the Direct IP play so I don't know if that is working either.

We all have newer computers (within the last year or so) and all of the games were installed on the computers at the same time. All 10 of the expansion packs (Warlords & BTS) were downloaded purchase versions, the original Civ IV versions were retail box purchases, except mine which was a downloaded purchase. My SO is running Vista, everyone else is running XP. We have a home network and all 5 of the computers in question are connected via cable.

Prior to the latest patch 3.13 we did not have this problem with sync, so my thought is that it was the patch. However, since we have to download the patch everytime we want to play multiplayer, we seem to have no choice but to keep it installed.

Has anyone else had this problem or have any idea of how to fix it??

Have Updated Version GOLD edition w/ Warlords

Contacted 2k.

Quits at different points during game. Have reduced all in game options to lowest settings. Re installed. Updated drivers. Updated Direct X. Any ideas???

OK so here's the FIX!

A video memory allocation error is in essense (for me) a RAM issue. Even on the lowest graphic settings and small maps I was indeed maxing out my memory. The Out Of RAM error should have popped up, but instead I would receive the Failed To Allocate Video Memory. Turning off this notification in the config settings would result in freezing or BSD or sometimes the CTD. The FIX? Upgraded to 4 gig of Ram from the 1 gig I had installed previously. No problems. Sometimes the simplest answer is the one that eludes you. Now playing BTS Large maps, full graphics no problems! Thanks to all who helped.

Can't Register an Online Account in game

I just did a fresh install and patched so I could play online with a friend. I goto the online window's Create a new account section, input my info, and click create...and the game does nothing. I can't get it to go...pushing either "create account" or "next" won't work even though it works fine for my friend.

I even tried logging in with my standard gamespy account, and of course , no go. Also, I went to www.gamespyid.com where they tell you to go in order to manage your gamepy accounts and see nothing to add a game.

Can anybody offer some input?

game closes to windows after some playing

howdy.

sorry if this has been posted before, but for so far i couldn't find the same problem (i could find posts that look like it but not complete the same)

when i start to play civ IV everything looks fine. but when i play a few minuts the game suddenly closes to windows without an error message or sommething.

as in the most posts i see people ask if it crashes at the same time, for this the answer is no, or at least as far as i know. I always open a new game, but sommethimes i can play for like 10 minuts, sommethimes i can play 30 minuts or longer or sommethimes i can hardly play 1 turn.

i already tried re-installing the game a few times but whithout any succes.

i hope you people can help me, thx.

I just bought the Civilization 4 Gold edition, and since I have never played any of the Civilization games before (heard about it from a friend) I have a question. When I downloaded the game I have 2 shortcuts on my desktop...Civilization 4 and Civilization 4: Warlords. I can see that Warlords is an expansion to Civ4, but if I play Warlords am I still playing the original game also? Sorry if this is a dumb question, just want to make sure that I don't start a game and then find out that I was suppose to do the other one. Any help will be much appreciated. Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

Hi all,

I have some technical issues during the game. As soon as the wonder movie starts to play I get kicked back to windows. When I load an old save and try again in most cases the video is ok.

It may have something to do with the performance of my system:

I have a 1.4GHz pentium4 system with 512Mb memory and an old Geforce3 (64Mb) card. Not good enough or is there something I can do?

Greetings all,

As I posted in another thread, the BtS install affected a couple of pbem's that I am in. When you install BtS, Vanilla and Warlords update to the newest patch automatically. After installing BtS, I noticed that I could no longer load my pbem saves. So, I found a possible solution on CivFanatics and tried the dual install, and couldn't get this method to work.

I then tried to completely remove Warlords, deleted all Warlords related files (except saves), and reinstalled the game clean. I then repatched to 2.08, instead of the newest 2.13.

The results were the same, still no game load.

I thought the issue was only related to the pbem's till I tried to load the dgame save to play the next turn tonight.... I got the same message that I got when trying to load the pbem:

In a panic, I tried the last idea again and did a complete uninstall and deletion of Warlords files. Then reinstalled and patched to 2.08 with the same results...

Any Ideas?...

Dual Install Instructions

Greetings all..

With the new patches that are out, there always seems to be some problems with some people updating while others have to wait because of pbem's or other games that cannot be loaded with a new patch. This becomes more of a problem when a new expansion like BtS comes out, because installing BtS automaticall upgrades to the new patch.

The Dual Install is a good solution to the problem.

If you have purchased BtS but have not yet installed it, these are the instructions to be able to play with both versions:

1. Copy "Sid Meier's Civilization IV" in Program Files/Firaxis Games, to "Sid Meier's Civilization IV v1.61". (You can just copy the folder right next to the original. It will take several minutes to accomplish usually)

2. Rename "Sid Meier's Civilization IV" in My Documents/My Games, to "Sid Meier's Civilization IV v1.61".

3. Install BtS.

4. Run from one directory or the other to get the version you want. You'll also be able to install mods separately for the two versions, save games will be separate for the two versions, etc. The new version will have a clean install with no mods, which is probably what you want (since many old mods won't work).

If you have Warlords, you don't have to do anything other than the above steps. There is a seperate Warlords folder in each of the folders represented above. For 2.08 (or any older patch), go into the Warlords folder in the CivIV 1.61 folder above and click the .exe file to start that game. (you can also copy that .exe to the desktop and rename it Warlords2.08 so you don't have to search folders for it)

For any new patch that you have loaded, you would click on the installed shortcut on your desktop or go into the original folder represented above to click the .exe there.

If you have already loaded BtS and would like to be able to revert back to a previous version there is a way to do that, but it can be "iffy" and I would suggest the following:

1. Completely uninstall CivIV Vanilla, Warlords, and BtS. (While copying any game saves you wish to keep in another folder)

2. Reload CivIV Vanilla and Warlords and repatch to the older patches you wish to play with (1.61 and 2.08 in my case)

3. Follow the steps listed above for a pre BtS Dual Install.

I know that the uninstall/reinstall takes a while, but it saves some headaches...

I recently got Civilization 3 installed onto my computer and I'm excited to play but I have a problem. When I start a new game everything runs smooth until I get to the screen where I have to choose which nation I'm going to be and et cetera. All of the words get jumbled and it just ends up look like a big mish mash of gibberish. If somebody would kindly take a picture of that screen and give me the like I'd appreciate it a ton.

Also, I realize that I have already posted this topic but when I thought about it is a technical issue.

game wont start - Primary control Theme

how to start off, i guess il start off with saying that i have run this game on this exact computer system, i have no upgrated since its a laptop. then i got sick of the game for a while and un installed it.

Now iv reinstalled it and applied the 1.6 patch, and i get an error 'CFG: Failed to initialise the primary control Theme'

i noticed there a little error file in the main folder and it says that it could not open a file 'BitmapTheme.thm'

i did a search for that file and it couldnt find it:S (i think thats what the problem is)

i guess my main question is, does everyone else have that file? (cause if u do, its probly that file im missing)

im on a satalite P10

2.66GHz

512MB Ram

32Mb Graphic

(i remind you that i have run this game on this exact system before)

Ne help would be greatly appreciated

Well, I knew it was too good to be true. My Walords copy of cIV isn't seeming to work.

The specific problem is, I think, video-related. Without knowing my computer's specs offhand, what happens is that every time I start up a new game right when I click "Start Game" the computer thinks for a bit, then the screen goes blank, and the only way to regain the picture is to close the game. Maddening as hell...

Theories? I'm all ears...

DVD cannot be read

Well frankly I'm @#$#@$ed off!!

Today I bought Civ4, and instead of being able to play today, I have been investigating and poring through websites trying to solve my problem.

My machine fell at the first hurdle - my DVD drive cannot even read the DVD rom! The most likely reason is the copy protection on the disc.

Here is what I have done today...

Looked through many many websites and forums to try and find possible answers.
Downloaded and installed the latest firmware for my DVD-ROM drive.
Been through a number of configuration options (from msconfig to device manager) so many times my head hurts!
Tried the DVD in another player - unfortunately today I could only try a normal movie DVD player, but that picked up the disc as a Data DVD - cannot try my work laptop til Monday.
Emailed HP support regarding my DVD drive in the hope they have an answer (not counting on it).

My DVD-ROM drive is an HP 300n (also known as 300i), and the latest firmware is V3.20.

To be honest, I am really disappointed. I held out buying Civ4 for ages, only to end up with this result. Why must legitimate owners of the game end up with such problems, when pirates are going to find a way to crack it regardless? Copy-protection doesn't work - people find ways to circumvent it. All it means is legitmate users get these hassles and can't even back up their game disc!

From what I have read, Stardock's GalCiv2 has a better approach - no protection on the disc, but a serial number system where you can only get updates if you are registered. If all else fails I'll take Civ4 back to EB games and exchange it for GalCiv2 instead!

So, what next? I can only wait for a response from HP (regarding the DVD). On Monday I can take my DVD to work to try it on another machine, just to rule out a faulty disc - doesn't seem likely to be faulty if my standard DVD player can identify it as a data disc and not a bad disc - but who knows?

Anyway I really should go to bed. It's gone 3am and I'm exhausted and angry. I'm really amazed I've kept this clean of swearing! The Mrs has already come out once to tell me to get some sleep so I really should go.

I am very disappointed and disillusioned. Bad show Sid, Firaxis and Take2. Looks like I won't be playing Civ4 anytime soon... :(:angry::crying:

Civ IV installation problems

I recently bought Civ IV and much to my surprise it only came with a single disk. No problem in itself I guess but when i put the disk in, no DVD icon appears on my desktop like the guide says it should, and i can't find a way to get the game installed at all. Has anyone else had a problem in this area?

Window Vista

I just upgraded to Vista. I saw that EBgames was having a sell on Sid Meier's Civilization Chronicles for fifty bucks, a good buy. Anyway, I need some advice, I've heard of various Vista-Game related problems and because of that I am somewhat reluctant to purchase Chronicles. What do you all think about this? Should I buy Chronicles and run the chance of there being some crazy problem with Vista and Civilization IV? Or simply pass up the deal? Also if it helps anyone, I downloaded the demo to see if it would work and the demo would not reply. I hope this has no reflection on the full game's compatibility with my PC

P.S. I ran Civ. IV fine on XP, but lent it to my friend who lost it, so I know my grap. card and sound and all of that computer jargon is good-to-go.

CTD

I have played CIV IV on small and normal maps and they run with no CTD. But when I play large maps I start to get CTD. Currently I am playing a large map and have spent hours on this map. When I end my next turn I receive a CTD error.

Which is :

I have spent hours looking for possible fixes but have found none so far. (I also have messed with the INI with no luck at all) I am dieing to know why it is crashing and how to fix it. Thanks for reading and any help would be great.

Renderer issue starting game

I'm getting the "Initialize renderer failed" followed by a list of parameters

1024 x 768

"Could not match desired full screen mode"

I'm using a 36" RCA TV/Monitor which is 800x600. I can't set it higher.

I changed the settings in the config file to 800 x 600 but that didn't work.

The video card is Nvidia 7600 GS with the latest drivers installed. Caesar IV is played on the computer successfully.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Problems Running Warlords Mods

I can't seem to get mods that I am DLing from CivFanatics to run, specifically the Nyomod and the HOF mod for the GOTMS at CivFanatics. When I try to load .savs (e.g., GOTM .savs) or start games with the mods I get an "error invalid Mod Directory" message, the game tries to restart and sometimes gets caught in a stall-restart loop.

I'm putting them in the:

C:/Program Files/Fiaxis/Sid Meier's Civ4/Warlords/Mods folder.

I've tried deleting the Cache file from

C:/Documents and Settings/Username/Application Data/My Games/Sid Meier's Civ4/Warlords/Cache

But that doesn't seem to make any difference.

I suspect that in order to install and run a DLed mod you have to open some Ini file or something and enter in a line in that file?? Anyone have any idea? I cannot believe that they do not simply have a "How to Install Mods" link over there at the Downloads section of CivFanatics.

Defeat after only a few turns?

I don't know if this has been mentioned before and I'm sorry for posting this if it has been, but recently only when I installed patch 1.61, I seem to get defeated after a few turns. I don't know why. It's never happened before and I'm playing with the same options that I've always been playing. I even turned off the time victory but still no luck. It ended at around 3000ish bc everytime. Does anyone know of a solution to this?

Woe is me. I have been punished for playing too many PBEM's. My CIV disc has grown a crack which has expanded from the inside into the data area and now I can't run the game. I expect I could get a replacement from Fireaxis by that could take ages, and anyway, the small print says the warranty period is a paltry 90 days so they have no obligation to replace it. Anyone know of a safe fix that means you don't need the disc to run the game? If I bought Warlords, could I use that disc and still play the vanilla version? Darned if I'm going to go and buy another copy of the same thing!

Video endings

Hi guys please don't shout at me if this has been posted before but can anybody help me?

Basically I am just wondering why the game runs fine but the videos i.e intro video on both cIV and warlords and the victory videos all stick. The first time I ever won on space race the video played fine but now it just sticks at the beginning. The video ends and the game goes on but it's annoying! Is this happening to everybody? And I am yet to see the intro videos cos they stick too. Anybody got any clues? As far as I know my video cards drivers are up to date and like I say the first time I won the video was fine but now is spannered?

Can't Uninstall Civ4 Off D: Drive

So I partitioned my HD into a C and a D. First I had Civ4, Warlords, etc. installed on the C, but space ran out so I uninstalled and then reinstalled on the D. IIRC, this was a bit tricky. The install wizard kept trying to put it on the C: Forget how exactly I finally got it to install, but I did, and for a while it was running fine. Also Warlords ran fine to (and still does).

However, it did not install into the Program Files Folder on the D: (not even sure there was such a folder there initially). All the separate folders were just scattered all over the D drive. I only noticed this after having it installed for quite some time, playing quite a bit of Warlords, and also setting up a PBEM map for Vina's PBEM.

During the course of working with the WorldBuilder, and setting up that PBEM, it became clear that, not having the folders in a proper hierrchy was problem. So I created the Program folder, the Civ4 folder, etc., and set them all up in that. Except now when I click on my Civ4 program icon, it tells me "This application has failed to start because BOOST_PYTHON-VC71-MT-1_32.DLL was not found. Re-installing may fix . . ." Same message when I try to use the Launch Civ4 shortcut icon I had setup.

Also when I insert my Civ4 PLAY disk and hit PLAY nothing happens (this is true for both Warlords and Civ4). However, I CAN still startup and play Civ4 Warlords from the shortcut I had setup.

So, Warlords will still run, but Civ4 won't run, and this is the real problem: neither Civ4 nor Warlords shows up in my Add Remove Programs Control Panel.

Another problem (maybe related or not) that has emerged is, I bought a headset microphone and now the audio does not work in Civ4 Warlords!

What I'd like to so is just totally uninstall Civ4 (and Warlords if that is necessary), but I am at a bit of a loss as to what I should do here. Any suggestions?
