Just click on the "Teams" link, then on the "My Team" tab and you'll see the same list of open matches. I always check the opponents' profiles before I join a match. Ratings are not always as straightforward as they should be. Sometimes a player will have dropped from 1700 to 1200, so you can expect a very tough game then. Personally, I won't join matches against lower rated players (such as the United Nations), because that's no fun for anyone, but some of the more competitive teams play very much for points. I'll keep an eye out, and will delete any challenges that look... cooked. Good thing everybody has a widescreen display nowadays... Anyone can join at any time, and will start at the bottom of the ladder with 0 points.

The rules are simple. Play each person on the ladder twice, once with white, once with black. You get 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss. Announce both the start and the end of your games in this thread. List the chessmaniac game number for easy reference (hopefully). In case of a time forfeit, the win will only be granted if the more patient person has a clear advantage. I suggest all games are 14 days a move, to prevent any time forfeits, but, um, who cares.

Good luck to all! :)

Perfect so far!

I was on the ropes and knew it and simply went for the attack last move in Zigeuner's game with me. Here's the thing:

There's a couple of correspondence chess sites out there where you can start your own team and play matches against other teams. I thought it would be fun to start a 1BC team on one of these sites, and have everybody with even the slightest interest join up. You don't need to be a strong player; you don't need to commit to anything that you don't want or choose to; play 2 games at a time, play 30, play 100 (well, no, please don't do that). Not only do I think it will be fun to "see" each other in such a different setting, I also think we might be able to attract some fresh kings and queens to this place.

I'm most familiar with chessmaniac.com, which is free and not (yet) too big, but if anyone has another suggestion, that's fine too.

So, please give some feedback as to the silliness and unattainability and complete hopelessness and utter sordidness of it all, and we can get this going... :D

Some chess resources...

Playing correspondence chess is a little different from live chess in that you can make use of... opening books! I'm not going to argue that the site that I use ***gasp*** is the best there is, it's just the one that I know about and like very much (and have mentioned somewhere before). If you've found (and used) another site, feel free to pile it on top...

CHESSOPS

Just duplicate the first move of a game on the "clear" board, say e4 or d4. These are the best ways to start at our level. Usually e4 leads to a more open game in which white tries to quickly overwhelm black's weakest spot, the pawn at f7 (which is defended only by the King). d4 (that's what I always play) leads to slower, safer games. You won't meet with sudden death too quickly if you get the hang of this opening. Here is what the site will show you

Now you can click on "Move" (um, it blinks and the screenshot just missed it. It will say BLACK to Move... :P ) and see what countermoves there are.

It starts with this one, but you can cycle through the options by clicking B-Alt. The comments are quite useful and very short. They will warn beginners against making certain moves, and they sometimes offer a strategic insight in the resulting position.

Just cycle through them to get the hang of it.

If you click on "Move" as often as you can without regarding any B/W-Alternatives, this opening will go on for 14 moves, but it is highly unusual to have more than 7 (or even 5) moves following the books in an actual game.

The big question is (or should be), what to do when someone makes a "bad" move, i.e. one that isn't covered by the books? Moving an outer pawn one forward is a good example; it is considered "bad" in most situations, but it happens a lot in modern, online chess. You can still look at the options that *are* in the book and gain a tempo by interfering with a likely "good" move. You can also just rely on your own insights, knowing that you may win the game. It was after all not you that got this message:

Anyway, now you know why I beat y'all...
(Well... there's also this one fun easy book that I'll post something about another day...)

Some moments of beauty

Well, as you guys know in most of my games I make one or more stupid mistakes which sometimes costs me the match. But there are a few moments when the fog in my head is lifted. Here is what happened in my tournament match playing white against GmChagas.

This is the situation after 16 ... Bc8-g4. Black is threatening to win a piece so I have to come up with something good; 17. Ne8xg7, Bg4xf3. If I play 18 Qd1xf3, Qa5xg5 my positional advantage will be gone. In stead I find a better winning move 18. Bg5-f6!! a queen sacrifice. To avoid check mate black has to respond with Kh8-g8 or h7-h5 which will win me the bishop at f3. He decided to take my queen 18. ..., Bf3xd1 and now it's check mate in 2 moves. 19. Ng7-f5+. Black resigns because check mate follows after 20. Did you know that chess is the oldest skill game in the world? But chess is more than just a game of skill. It can tell you much about the way people lived in medieval times. If you look at the way a chess board is set up, then study the pieces and how they are used, you will realize that chess is a history of medieval times in miniature. The six different chess pieces on the board represent a cross section of medieval life with its many ceremonies, grandeur, and wars.

Anyone play Chess?

If you have a rating, what is it?I used to play alot a few months ago.
