The Omegan's have revealed their own fully equipped fleet of transports accompanied with destroyers and any hopes of taking it to them in any sort of last ditch effort can be safely given up. At the rate of the bombings, even if we were to beat back the fleet and it's occupants with our incoming airships and current supply of destroyers, it would only post-pone the inevitable with us unable to punch through the waters.

Originally, I wanted to keep the save going to please both sides. However, it looks like there's really no point in doing so with the outcome essentially decided and Omega ready to move on.

In regards to keeping the save going for our beloved Alpha in the present, like Black Owl has so poetically put it in another thread, we're pissing against the wind being unable to poke the eyes of Omegan spies. With that and having to compete against ICBMs, I doubt there will be any heroic last stand or offensive with half of Alpha turning mutant and succumbing to their awakened brain eating desires.

In regards to keeping the save going for Omega in the present, it looks like Omega is ready to call it quits and have this one end with Domination. Which is great in my mind, since I won't have to force myself to sit there out of respect and allow Omega to carry out their long term plans.

I'm very eager to start discussions concerning the next game to see how we can make the experience more unique and even more fun then this one. Not to mention, we've been given plenty of food for thought, especially in the espionage department. Thus, I've voted: yea. Even though this one will have ended under my watch and term.

Ah ****

Welp, our worst fears have indeed been confirmed. I didn't even notice it at first until I began going through the cities, Princep has suffered the first series of what I expect to be prolonged nuclear attacks that could very likely slowly but surely subdue us into submission.

On that note, any plans? :w00t: :pinch:

In other news regarding this turn, we sunk the heathen harlot mothered sailors off the coast of Biztown and Viking territory without losses.

News regarding Omega THIS!

When you upload the save and see Cavalry you never really feel positive about the situation, thankfully however, it was far less then what I expected. The original garrison of Omega THIS! (which consisted of 1 long bowman and musket man) have been completely upgraded into full fledged riflemen in hopes of saving the city. I'll also add for everyone's note, that if the city is indeed saved from destruction, it will be thanks to the respectable Japanese which, when asked, donated the extra needed 40 gold to upgrade both. The former spy in the city has been moved in the event the worst indeed happens.

I've decreased the science slider so we'll be seeing 200+ gpt in order to continue this upgrading spree and hopefully bring Sea Food City up to the same expected standards in this time of war. I believe it's very possible the Omegans will decide not to risk those three units and move towards SFC believing we can't counter them there. However, we have both Cavalry previously stationed near Japan and one Cannon previously stationed near Bismarckia marching towards the area inland. Other then that, keep your fingers crossed.

I'm also hopeful we can pump out that ironclad in the build que in time to top one of those vessels.

Internet Problem

At a friend's house atm, going to be without internet at the house until the 29th. Our first Ironclad has sailed out of Palpa with its escort to give the blockading Omegan ships something to think about! :)

We're now researching Railroad, better transport and machine guns will be very nice for defence. Our land forces are not looking too bad, though of course they still own the seas... hopefully our new Ironclads can do something about that around our coast atleast, though they don't move too fast!! :ermm:

Also I've rebuilt Artypolis and filled it up with units, it'll take a while to grow though unfortunately!

So change is necessary at the top, I will not have the time to run this for a while so does somebody else want to take it on?

Dawn of the 18th Century!

The year is now 1705. We had learnt how to make guns and give them to people, earlier we had (as the Japanese found out) learnt how to make horses and put people on them! There then followed a period where not all that much really happened... but then, after a period of intense research, we worked out how to put people with guns on horses and there was much rejoicing. We now have a force of ~14 Currassiers split between the east and west coast. Hopefully with a few more on the way.
We are now researching Steel (2 turns), which should give us cannons (nice!) and potentially Ironclads in future with Steam Power! :w00t: If we can get them before Omega get Destroyers , then we should be able to clear our own coast. In other research news the Vikings have completed Rifling, but rate it higher than everything we've currently got (Music+Nationalism). We should be able to give them Steel for it in 2 turns though. Then save up for a mass Cavalry/Cannon/Rifleman upgrade.

The big domestic news is...

Bismarckia builds the Sistine Chapel. Also Artypolis completed the Heroic Epic on the same turn.

Some bad news is that we got absolutely mauled on the high seas - north, east and west! We attacked with good numbers, but lost battle after battle on the dice roll. :ermm: We had good odds going into some of the battles but lost with little damage inflicted... never enjoyable!! The final count was about 6-2 to them (5-1 after our attack, 1-1 on their counter attack). And so we now have a near total ban on all ships venturing out of port unless they can get back to safety. Tough ask given their +1 movement and our lack of it. Roll on Ironclads! :D

Also Ragnar attacked one of the Omegan Ships of the Line off our east coast with one of his own this turn... he lost :( It must have been pretty much a suicide mission as it was one of their 3 star ships and I don't see Ragnar with any drydocks. Bonus XPs for no loss, ah well.

Now I'm definately speculating here but the barb island is starting to look suspicious to me, I don't know how well they're defending it. I hope Omega haven't managed to take it. With every tile a resource, that's the last thing we need.
Still no sign of an invasion force, but given our average 4 tile line of sight off the coast they can land anywhere before we can see them coming. Positioning continent wide, and keeping our larger attacking forces out of cities (which they can to see) but in range of landing sites, should be our top priority in defence.
So NC, or anyone want a piece of this action? ...it's an open floor. :)

Elections

So elections.

Well atleast that's how we're fronting it. They only just got it this turn themselves and I think they were researching something else, it quite possibly came from the Omega fund? They're at war with each other now anyway!! :D On the tech front Japan is way behind though, with Education, Printing Press and Astronomy, we should possibly think about giving them these ourselves so they can catch up.

And in other continental news, we told Ragnar that he was worth exactly one Copper... he agreed! :)

Here is the new state of international affairs:

Nice! Ragnar is now researching Rifling too and we've set out to get Military Tradition (Currasiers, Cavalry). Although they started out on 6 turns and after the end of the turn they were on 7 turns, so who knows when they'll get it. :ermm:

In national news - Welcome to Nebula City! :D

And the news from our ship in far away waters:

Tee-hee!

One thing of concern though. Now that we can see what Ragnar sees his (maybe soon to be overun?) outpost on Omega's continent is a very useful lookout point, and this is what it has seen:

Hmm, probably time to get plenty of defensive units over to the east. We really need cannons too so we can upgrade and smash a few Omegan stacks. Thoughts on Military Tradition (to combat their presumed imminent big horses) vs. Steel (Cannons and later tasty defensive Ironclads)?

So do you want to take this on from here NC? (Or Bis?)

Glorious victory for the Alphan Army

So the battle of Kyoto is over. Omegan forces indeed made their (anticipated :w00t: ) surprise landings north of Kyoto hoping for a quick kill of our small number of recouperating units and an easy raze.
...but it was not so!!! :D The Alphan commander was very suspicious of what may lie off the coast considering the recent tragedies of the Dave Coast and Demos :( So after the, now exhausted, seige force had reduced the Japanese defences in Kyoto to the point of collapse and with a squadron of Knights ready to march into the city to finish of their Samurai remaining, the Alphan army decided to hold back. For the Grenadiers and Muskets were on their way north to assist.

The next turn the entire Alphan army marched into the city. Immediately, the very same soldiers who razed Dave Coast poured out of their galleons onto the shore and the battle commenced. Alphan knights attempted to weaken them before they could strike, especially to damage those nasty looking trebuchets. Alas, the trebuchets remained unhurt.

More defenders rushed in to sure up the defence. The Omegan force attacked, the trebuchets inflicted terrible damage (2 of the 3 surviving) and the Stormtroopers and the illiterate ones* :) killed their opponents with no damage inflicted in return :ermm:

* Edit: hmm, ok so you can't see it on the reduced size image, but suffice to say the "Fightin' Firteenth" won't be doing much fighting anymore :P

But the trap had already been laid ...and it was at that moment that the secret hidden force arrived at the coast to overrun the unsuspecting Omegan army. :D The Grenadier/Knight assault was an outstanding success, the Omegans had nothing left to give and revenge had been taken against these barbarians who would dare to deprive Dave of his holiday home retreat!

The great general Heinz Guderian was born during this battle and I suggest we use him to create a military academy in Palpa or Artypolis (building the Heroic Epic in the other) to help out our military production.

Our knights ruthlessly finished off the fleeing Omegan forces. During this route one General found a smouldering Omegan flag lying broken on the ground, stepping up onto the summit of the hill and holding the remains aloft he was clearly visible to the Omegan ships watching off the coast.

:D

The entire Omegan invasion force has been destroyed, though at a cost, but the trap was set and Omega fell for it hook, line and sinker!!!

Now let us bask in the glory of this victory.

Update: Kyoto is ours!

The Kyoto siege force marched through the streets this turn and the city fell under Alphan control.

Military Science research is completed so we can now build Ships of the Line and Grenadiers. We have upgraded to 7 Grenadiers (mainly in coastal areas :)) this turn.

Also we can now get a good idea of the Omegan continent here too ...you know, incase we want to go and invade them anytime soon! :P

Also only 3 more XP points to our next Great Leader.

From the Great Wall it looks like this is where their central area is:

And check this out, Ragnar has colonized a (very) small part of their continent.

So now that we have taken Kyoto I was looking at making peace with Japan. Right now they'll give us Drama, Music and all their money 100g ish + map. Unfortunately Omega made peace with both the Vikings and Japan (again) a few turns ago so have a 10 turn treaty (around 3 turns to go) with both, this means Japan cannot capitulate to us at the moment. We could wait a few turns and see if they'll capitulate when this treaty expires?

And I gave military science to Ragnar to let him get some good units out.

Update 1640AD

Because of the tech lead Omega has on us, I added that Great Engineer to our capital.

This came up, and we already had the prerequisites, so the next turn:

Pinch is of course the bonus vs. gunpowder units. SWEET! Option 2 would have given us just over 500 gold, which would be nice, but 500 gold will not save us from Omega where extra stout units may. Option 3 was unavailable to us (Taj Mahal) I went with "pinch." With this in mind, it may be best to build lots of Musketmen before we ever go to riflemen and spend a lot of money to upgrade them afterwards so our riflemen have that free pinch from having just been musketmen.

Our economy is doing pretty well at the moment and we are making a profit at 70% science. I think its 2 turns to Military Science and the science slider was able to be turned down to around 40% with a lot of extra gold, with 0 turns difference from 70% science. Nice.

We have attacked Kyoto and have lost 6 trebuchets (ouch!) and I believe 3 units. The above is what we have left. The below is what Kyoto has left.

If they don't suddenly reinforce it, we should be able to take it next turn. This city was costly on us, but far more costly on them. I'd sue for peace (make them our vassal if we can) after taking this city.

Artymus, its all yours, sir.

More disappointing developments

They have razed Demos. It was a surprise (not really) amphibious assault that we didn't put up a very good fight on, appearantly.

The only bright spot to report is that 2 knights came in (immune to 1st strikes) and destroyed their Great General and the other unit. No losses there.

The seige of Osaka is going slowly as our trebuchets are too damaged to continue and are healing in enemy territory. 2 more on are the way up with just a pikeman for defense. I'm a little nervous about that one. Osaka is well defended too.

Look how many techs they have on us. Those are just the ones we can see. 2 levels up on the tree and we won't see those. We will probably be facing cavalry soon with only musketmen and knights to defend with.

I hate to be the 1st one to say something defeatist, but we have lost 2 cities to superior units. They will soon have vastly superior units as soon as they drop off cavalry or even "just" curaissiers. If we make peace with Japan, then the 3 civs (us, Japan and Vikings) will be about the same size as their empire, as far as we can tell from the map so far. They have naval superiority and will continue to have it with that tech lead. We will soon have our frigates going against ironsides and destroyers.

The thought of our delicious truffles in their hands scares the hell out of me. Anyone have any bright ideas?

Midterm

Right well I think it's about time for a handover, are you able to take it on NC? ...I hope so, I've just thrown you into the Omegan trench!!! :D :P
So the seige of Kyoto has run in to some trouble. A knight came and attacked one of our knights in the main stack, destroyed it and damaged all our trebuchets by a third. That'll teach me to put them all on the same tile. We've got there defences down to the stage where they only need one more turn of bombardment until attack (but the trebuchets are not in a good way any more - two more on the way up) And the reserve knights are now down in the south tracking the Omegan pirates.

Speaking of which, their force jumped back on to the ships and is now moving down the coast. We are keeping our main knight army out of sight (unless they have spies on us) but within range of any landing site and their fast movement will allow them to continue tracking the fleet. And our cities attempting to stop an amphibious attack. They're now off the coast of Omega THIS! ...but they haven't yet :w00t: So it's anybodies guess as to whether they are looking to offload, and that our coastal discouragement worked - last turn atleast, or if they're heading to the east anyway. We can keep up with them all the way if they do.

I think we should change to Vassalage, and maybe go the whole hog and Theocracy too, to get the XP bonus. Our ships are at a huge diadvantage because we're coming out as novices to their one or two star ships. So far its been a case of needing greater numbers to not be overwhelmed by their stronger ships and a tactical game of only wanting us to attack them and not have 'out-starred' ships be caught in the open. We have 5 Frigates and (I think) 2 on the way and one new Caravel (ready for upgrade) with one more on the way (another upgrade).

Three of our frigates are in Palpa with two beefed up Omegan ships lurking out of our range waiting to pounce. I was waiting until we get four (2ish turns?) then I think it would be safe to venture out and invite them to attack us. Otherwise they'll just be able to pick us off. Coastal fortress just completed to give us an extra safe haven... our Ships are very valuable to us!

Replacable parts in 1 turn, was heading for Rifling and then thinking of hoarding gold for a few turns and upgrading as many of our swords/maces/muskets as possible to Riflemen. Plus we've got to be wary of Ships of the Line pouncing on us and destroying our valuable frigate fleet.

...Oh I enjoy the tactical game! :D
Go get 'em like only a Nuclear Cow can!!
Edit: Could've done with a few screen shots, I'll come back with some.

Dissapointing developments

Oh dear! :ermm:

Dave Coast doesn't like this. The garrison of one brave Musketman and two equally brave archers (some may say foolishly brave in their case!) are not expected to hold out too long. We certainly have a problem.

The good news is that we have 10 knights, 2 trebuchets and two backup musketmen converging on this region from the north and the east. We may not be able to save the city but we can meet them in classic lance vs. grenade battle in the field all the same.

Most core cities are putting everything into military unit production. Our siege on Kyoto has coincidently just begun and I don't think should stop for this, though extra knights about to arrive made an about turn and are now heading south.

In other news the Apostolic Palace high council has decided this act is an insult to the faith and so...

It's nice being able to 'vote' them back onside!!! :D Though we've pretty much broken Japans ability to do much to help and it also creates a weird triangular war between us!

Grand Masters

A new Great Engineer has just been born in Princep! :D

I suggest we maybe use him to create a wonder? Its kind of a moot point at the moment since he has no ocean travel, but I would suggest we pay the money for war, before Omega pays THEM for war against us. Also, when we get ocean warfare units, we should sell/give to Vikings.

2nd thought. If our 2nd caravel finds another civ near Omega, we should bribe them to fight Omega as well, even if it costs us a lot.

What do you guys think? (4? How can I lose track already?)

Japan sank our galley. It cost them a galley, but they sunk it with a 2nd galley.

With those 2 galleys, they dropped off 4 troops a city back from our front, but we destroyed them without any losses. They sent 2 more chariots up on our front, which we destroyed without any losses. I upgraded an Immortal unit to knights and sent them to our front last turn. It ended up being good timing because this turn, they intercepted another Japanese chariot flanking to our side and destroyed it before it could do any damage.

Almost ready to head on to Cowtown. We have beat down their counter-attack well so far. They have amassed a decent defensive force from out of nowhere to defend Cowtown. I'm almost impressed, but I've tasted their inferior truffles. The taste still gags me just by thinking about it.

I forgot to mention it before. We received a Great General during day 2 of our war. I added it to our capital. Our capital just started building the Apostic Palace. I was tempted to pass on that and just build knights from our capital. What do you guys think? Input? Extra effort was put into this to get it a couple of turns early!

I suggest we change to the recently available Mercantilism when gunpowder finishes. We're only trading with the four Viking cities outside of our own borders currently so not too much to be lost there and the free specialist will be great. Also we could think about changing to Universal Sufferage at the same time and hoarding gold to get some big projects finished off in the future. A nice advantage over Omega! We have a large enough happiness buffer to be able to take the switch.

In other news, the Shwedagon Paya has been serving us well! Our second great prophet has just been born in Princep. :) The Kong Maio shall soon be overlooking the Dave Coast!! Time to speed up the spread of confucianism.

Reports are coming back from the voyages of our ships in the Kangell Sea and there has been a sighting of a coast inhabited by barbarians (the non-Omegan kind :P)

By the way does anyone know why we can't see our spy point status with Omega in the same way that we can with other civs? Which is to be found on the proposed city site on the river to the east of St Suma.

The developing west with the Dave Coast about to grow in culture, hopefully to eventually take the vital crab that the Japanese helpfully started fishing for us! :) Workers will hit this area again when we get the growth from that crab.

The east with our 4th market and 5th library under contruction. The Viking border with our 2nd missionary entering their lands. Our settler is on the road to the Bastable river valley. Carib to the north is looking very nice!

And here is our capital region. Cottages are popping up over the landscape here, with farms to help growth.

One thing to note is the Omegans score which has risen sharply, nothing we could do about this (until we meet them! :D), though they did beat us to the Great Library and the Statue of Zeus which helped them out. I am assuming they are currently undertaking a successful spell of conquering their neighbours! Doesn't bother us too much anyway, as we will be conquering our own in due course.

So all in all it has been a very economic term. And I am also now continuing to build cottages and soon more markets.

What comments have you guys got, what path shall we take with our research. I hope to get metal casting either from the Vikings or get it ourselves if they turn us down. Then Machinery -> Engineering -> seige the Japanese? :)

I think if I undertake some more unit production we could look at hitting the Japanese in a subsequent term. Keeping the Viking in the green. Also we have now Vassalage and Serfdom available (as well all government and religion civics) I suggest we implement these two.

Anything else?

Elections for term 9

Well the polls are now open until turn 160 (currently 158) could be a close race... :)

Nominations for term 9

Ok I have four more turns to play (157-160) so I think it's a good time to set the scene for the 9th term. I am happy to continue on for a 2nd term before standing aside if that is the will of the senate. But equally, if anybody else definately wants to get in (or back in) to the action let it be known here...

I'll give a post on the current state of the Alphan nation in a few turns (/days) time. That'll be a perfect opportunity for us to decide what general direction we should head in and much discussion on all topics Alpha shall be had! :D

Glory to Alpha!!!

Oh yeah!!!

The labours of a generation of workers in Princep have finally come to fruition... The Shwedagon Paya has been been completed in our glorious capital. Great news is the great prophet points we'll start raking in, so though they may be the outside chance the next time round, we'll hopefully be building our Temple of Solomon sooner rather than later. I suggest we stay in organized religion for now but atleast we can now choose whatever we want in the future if the situation changes.

In other news, during the construction of our Great Library of Bismarckia, we found out that someone else has built a greater one! ...our agents in the field suspect the Omegans.

Not only that but there are further suspicions that they now have 3 core cities with a 3,2,2 wonder distribution... not good!

Anyway, err... nevermind that, on with the celebrations! :D

The first dawn rises on the 8th term

Ok the first 20 years of term 8 have been and gone, my doesn't time fly! :P

So it seems that the Vikings smelt a change at the top of the Alphan leadership and had an emissary already waiting for me when I arrived for my first day at the office (can't a leader sit back and enjoy their first day?). Well he wanted to drag us into their war with Japan, I told him that that wasn't the will of the senate, he got slightly annoyed! I showed him the door. Besides, we like the Japanese![/cross fingers] :)

I have commenced upon the most excellent 'general plan' set down at the end of the 7th term. And we shall adopt organized religion in 2-3 turns time.

What are the thoughts on trading our (non vital) technology, either in the short or longer term? Currently both our neighbours are acting stubbornly but with a little incentive they may come round. There is calendar(both), horseback riding and metal casting (Viking) out there, we have four/five techs available so we could sweeten them up first... maybe. Admittedly me slapping their emissary round the face with my glove may have hurt our chances with the Vikings, and hopefully wasn't misinterpreted by the Viking leadership! :)

What do you think pursue trade or laugh at them for not being mystic?
