Failure is not an option here. We will not be beaten by a bunch of dozy democrats.

I propose we use this secret underground conference facility for secret underground conferences, and if you don't like moody lighting you're in the wrong team.

First item: choice of civilization. I think we have given Alpha the impression we will go with a militaristic civ with an early UU. Do we want to go with this, or do the opposite? Does anyone have a real favourite in mind, and does anyone know of a real dog of a civ that we must avoid?

We should pool our knowledge and talent which is, dare I say, considerable, for the benefit of team Omega. Just don't tell anyone we're co-operating.

Suggestions please, gentlemen.

End-of-term National Address

There has been talk of dictators giving national addresses at the end of their term, and I intend to start this tradition.

As you may know, I have led Omega with an iron fist during the latest 25 turns. As I was in the midst of a war, my successor was not present, tones insisted on me continuing and nobody present objected, so I played an additional five turns.

Many things have happened during those 25 turns. For the first time we have mobilized for war, and drawn blood for the glory of Omega. Bladed melee technology has been taken from theory to concept to reality to battlefield application, and the streets of conquered Seoul runs red with our enemies' blood. Furthermore, we have founded two new cities: Junker Hill and Mushroom City. The former is placed to become a military-industrial powerhouse, the latter a gold producer and a great people farm. We have researched Mathematics on the way to Construction, and entered the classical age. Finally, Hinduism has spread into Junker Hill, and been adopted as our state religion.

Some statistics:

At the start of my term, our military consisted of two units, warriors both. At its end, it has been enlarged with 7 axemen, an increase of 350% in volume.

At the start of my term, we had two cities (Megaton and Napalm Springs). Through settlement and conquest we acquired Junker Hill, Mushroom City and Seoul, an increase of 150% in number of cities.

As for where-to now, our field army of five axemen have surrounded Pyongyang. Three archers defend it, so a direct assault would be very foolhardy. Yet, our axemen rule the fields, blocking all production squares outside the city, leaving the Koreans with only one hammer from under the city. They will stay in stasis practically unable to build anything until we conquer them. Construction is being researched to give us catapults to knock down the walls, it will also aid us in giving us colosseums to entertain our restless population.

So, gentlemen, I hand over the whip of power to whoever is bound to succeed me. It has been a good term, we are walking the road to world domination with firm goose-steps.

The Stormtrooper Palace

Also known as the HQ of Konrad von Richtmark, Fabricator-Generalissimo of the Omegan Military-Industrial Complex, this shall be my hangout during my rule, as well as any time I feel like it. The main reasons were:

It will probably surprise the opposition; it doesn't matter what sort of map we play on; the creative trait and its culture boost is enormously helpful - you don't have to have a religion, you don't have to build early culture-producing buildings and the defensive advantages are huge; the Organised trait saves 50% on upkeep which is arguably as good as Financial, and a lot less dependent on position; some of my favourite buildings (library, theatre, lighthouse, courthouse and others) are built double quick; we start with mining and hunting, both quite aggressive techs; the Stele gives a 25% culture boost (25%!); in my experience Ethiopia always seems to do well as an AI - in our hands it can only do even better.

I hope you can all live with this. I played trials as both Korea and Ethiopia, and the latter was just easier and that, frankly, has got to be an advantage especially against a human team.

Where did it go wrong...

...for team alpha, of course.

I thought it might be entertaining (and educational) to analyze why we have fared so much better than team alpha. Of course we had a sweeping start with just about as many cities as possible. We also dispatched Korea early on (against my advice, how dare you!) which created an even bigger empire. But did the alphans make any obvious mistakes in the meantime?

One thing that surprised me when I first set eyes on alphaland

is the multitude of farms. Perhaps this city had just been captured (only the AI builds one tile off the coast, hopefully) but shouldn't a swarm of workers be on the army's heels to make the land profitable? My guess is that alpha did not have enough workers AND chose to emphasize hammers over commerce.

So, where did alpha miss the boat?

Beginning of THE END

The dark-cowled figure of tones appears on the balcony of the Palace of Gigaton, and approaches the microphone.

Fellowowow Lordsords ords and nd nd Peoplesleslesles of Omega ga ga ga screeeeEEEEEEEEEEE

In a back room a fraught sound technician fiddles with the amplifier and curses this newfangled electricity.

I have come here this evening to the Victory Parade Ground on the generous invitation of our current Dictator, General Konrad.

*polite applause and whistles*

It is, indeed, no small honour he has bestowed upon me, and I consider myself fortunate that I stand proudly here before you, and all Omega, ready to take on this appointed task.

Ours has been a noble and just cause. Although her navies rule the seas, Omega is unable yet to utterly crush its enemies who have come together under a cruel vassalage engineered by the fiendish Alphan leadership.

Thus this era is a chronicle of attrition. Great strides have been made by the previous dictator, jerm the Infectious, but he was forced to retire due to ill health before his many plans could be brought to fruition. His legacy remains, however, with the country strong, its cities growing, and its scientists probing the very cutting edges of technology.

With little prospect of a final apocalyptic battle quickly being able to decide the fate of nations, Tones IV instituted a policy of attrition against the enemy to wear them down and sap their moral whilst at the same time building a formidable home continent able to produce the most modern troops in unassailable numbers.

To the dark and portentous orchestration of Pink Floyd, the Dictator sat alone in the Palace of Gigaton to fashion his plans.

*Fixed by TC*

jerm warfare division

Cold, damp, full of puss. Perfect! I take the keys (ever so careful not to actually touch Konrad) and begin to have my designs implemented for the dictatorial palace. Once the place is homely enough, I get word that gold's been discovered in the mines near Fragmentation which spurs a gold rush. I choose to spend a bit of gold to encourage the rush and it's now a size 7 (from a size 4) and is now giving us 2 extra GPT. For 28 gold, it'll pay for itself in 14 turns.

Our new spy Fraushag... or whatever, landed out of Alphan range in Viking territory. It's kind of ironic that the vikings don't have any ships out and about.

Alpha is on full scale military production. There's not a city which is not producing a military unit or a city improvement which benefits military units. According to the graphs, they are about equal to us in production and power which mean the raids are going to become only more and more difficult to pull off. Already, the 5 knights Konrad warned of have come to guard the Seafood City. The hill needed to take the city has been taken by two knights with three more on the way. While I think we'd win against the knights, we'd sustain too much damage to take the city.

Instead, I'll sail just south of Omega THIS! and they'll have no choice but to send some knights to protect it and then I'll make a shot for Demos and see what things look like when I arrive. Our window for raiding may be almost over... until we can bring more forces.

See Victory Conditions attachment below:

I think we need to start thinking endgame as well. How do we want to win? Conquest is probably out of the question and Domination is a stretch. Diplomatic is not a likely win either IMO. Cultural is a possibility since we have such a cultural lead on Alpha but I have a feeling we're going to be at war a lot with Alpha and the attention needed to build our three cultural centers to Legendary status will likely be diverted. Space Race seems to be the most obvious direction for me. We've already got the tech lead and industrial complexes galore. It would sure beat a time victory but it may come to that.

I'd also like to consider going for Mining Inc. if only to prevent Alpha from getting it. If they do, a Space Race victory for them becomes a real possibility, not to mention they've had a Great Engineer sitting around for some time (in Bismarckia). They'll also become a real pain militarily. On the other hand, it'll be a great boon for our industrial complex cities and our commerce cities will try and make up for the expense.

Since we have Free Speech, I can't shoot you for dissenting opinions... but I may sneeze on you :P.

On War Plans

1. The Viking Option

This plan aims to turn the recent vassalisation of Japan and the Vikings against Alpha as much as possible.

If my understanding of capitulation is correct, then Alpha has made a decision that cannot be reversed. Japan will be a little protectorate for the rest of the game. Alpha cannot expand into their territory (except through culture) and will never be able to utilise those Japanese cities. In fact this vassal is causing additional maintenance costs for Alpha. The Japanese are no threat to us militarily, and are highly unlikely to make any significant technological progress that they can trade to their master. To flip Japanese cities, Alpha will have to spend a fortune in EP's which they need against us.

I therefore suggest we leave Japan alone. It is doing a fine job for us.

The Vikings became a voluntary vassal and therefore theoretically could "pull out" of the deal allowing Alpha to crush them and gain 4 cities.

I suggest we destroy Haithabu and Nidaros. This will make the Vikings another useless appendage, taking up valuable space and contributing little. I have no idea whether it will convince them to cling to Alpha (as I hope) or not. Even if they reject their master, they will be a pathetic two-city state. I don't believe the Alphans will be expecting this, so I doubt they have, or will, reinforce these cities. Certainly their priority will be to protect their own coastal cities first. IIRC Haithabu is also the Taoist Holy City and destroying that now precludes all possibility of Alpha ever getting its thieving hands on it.

This suggestion, perhaps, goes against the logic that we should strike at the cities of our main rival. Firstly, that is what they will expect. Secondly, I think we need infantry to be truly effective against them. Thirdly, it will increase our war weariness. Attacking Ragnar will, I believe, have less of an effect as we have hardly built up any WW with him at all (it was usually his ships in our waters). If the cities are defended with outmoded troops we should win easily and pick up some promotions into the bargain. This would not be viewed as a suicide mission. We need to hurry though, before the Vikings discover rifling. If it turns out these cities are heavily defended then we ditch the plan and divert the troops either to an Alphan target, or stack 'em in treasure Island for future upgrading. In an ideal world, attacking Haithabu and Nidaros would be a diversion with the real attack against Alpha coming in from the opposite end of the continent, possibly against one of the Alphan-occupied Japanese cities with less cultural defense. However, I doubt we have the troop numbers.

2. Kerrrrching. The Pirate Option.

Now that we are at war with everyone and we have pretty much mastery of the seas we should attach a privateer to each blockading unit. Protected by frigates and Ships of the Line they'll be invulnerable. This will extend their useful life way beyond the normal and we can make an income from them for years (possibly until The End) Build them now before they become obsolete. Eventually they'll be protected by Battleships and still be pulling in the cash!! Forget what I said about operating them in stacks - things have changed.
Standing Orders - all dictators

Until further notice, in case you missed it elsewhere, or have been absent, every Omegan dictator will comply with the following:

No changing away from the civic Theocracy

No city supporting the Jewish religion shall be occupied and maintained. The surviving manuscripts, though diverse and incomplete, are largely intact and allow us a priveledged retrospective understanding of the hearts and minds of some the greatest leaders the world has ever seen.

This particular record details what has subsequently become known as the "Age of Ascendancy" when this country emerged as the undisputed, pre-eminant power among nations. Though Omega was later beset by further challenges and bitter rearguard wars, this period effectively sealed the fate of the world, and is the reason you, the historical scholar of today, can use and understand the Omegabet, and enjoy the fruitful, rewarding life that you do under our enlightened leadership.

The era immediately preceding this age was one of economic stabilisation and rapid growth of the medieval military industrial complex under the von Richtmark Dynasty (for details of this period, please refer to "The Stormtrooper Palace" manuscripts) and it is important for allowing the subsequent and now legendary Tones Dynasty to achieve continental domination. In an ironic twist of fate, the Zigeuner faction, who might well have been able to claim power when Konrad II had his unfortunate accident with the trebuchet "fun ride", were away on vacation enjoying the sunshine at the time, and so it fell to the Tones Clan to pick up the Mace of Monarchy and bludgeon out the destiny of the Omegan people.

Lucky for us all, eh?

Transciption from High Court proceedings, Megaton Courthouse, AD1315

Attention all dictators! General staff meeting!

I just opened borders with Korea, and look what I found!

Yep, that's right, a holy city on a plain, guarded by a single warrior!

I have ordered an axeman from Megaton, which will start building it in two turns when the settler is done. Ditto with Napalm Springs, which has two turns left to go on its library. I'm not a habitual rusher (don't remember the last time I did a serious attack in the pre-catapult era), but this chance seems just too good to miss.

If there is still only one warrior guarding Seoul when two axemen arrive at the border, I will show the gooks who owns the world and space! If a pesky archer has taken up position there in the meantime, too bad, but the axemen won't have been wasted as we'd still have to build them to guard settlements. Warriors are insufficient for settlement defence when barbs start running around with bows, and obsolete against barb axes.

I started researching the Omegabet, but if we're going to war, we might just as well beeline for Construction. It's some 30 turns there, compared to 20 to the Omegabet. I estimate we'll be taking Seoul with axes, but will face bows when scaling Pyongyang (which is the other city they have, I was able to gather from the diplomacy screen).

Is there something else... oh yes, I called a staff meeting, not a press conference. Does anyone have anything to add, or does someone want to question my plan of action?

On National Wonders...

I was stunned by the misplacement of some national wonders in our Roman dynasty game, so I hope we can discuss the best use of those before anyone starts to actually build them.

The Globe is HUGE! You can draft endlessly and without repercussions in the city with the Globe, so... it should be built in a city with enormous food production (such as that barb city with all the sea food and wheat).

(Um, there's others, but I gotta go now... :P)

LC Turn Update

Turn 2: 840 AD (As any good dictator would, I will be giving turn updates to track the glory of my reign)

Cutting Edge builds Courthouse!!! Does it matter which cities the spies hang out, does it have to be the capital??? Or will Oporto do?

Noticed Portugal is researching the Currency. Omegabet at last.

Now we can trade techs with the foreign scumba... I mean commercial partners. Here's a reminder of what's available at the mo:

Normally I don't like to give away Alphab...I mean Omegabet until the last possible moment, but since these guys are dead anyway, and probably not in contact with anyone else, we could encourage a nice little tech-trading syndicate prior to exterminating the buggers. Shame the P'guese won't trade metalworking:pinch: Nevertheless, Ironworking would be right useful. We're going to start needing to clear jungle soon and a nice swordsmen army will make sushi out of the Koreans providing we can keep their hands off any metal (that's one reason why I was banging on about culture and borders and stuff at the start of all this; more land=more resources for us and less for the opposition)

Let me have your thoughts and I'll start trading next turn.

On Techies...

As I mentioned elsewhere... let's settle on a tech path. Cheap courthouses seem the best thing right now (or 20+ turns from now :P). That does not mean he can't ask for advice or, in the event that all the other Generals are asleep, he can't consult these archives where, hopefully, there will be some pearls of wisdom to cover whatever situation is being confronted.

With that in mind, it will help if anyone who contributes label accordingly - Strategy, Unit Tactics, How to Use Spies, Best Wonders, How I Screwed Up Totally - that sort of thing. Obviously it is early days and only general experience will be relevant, but as we commence the game then more situation-specific topics may crop up. For example...

ESPIONAGE this is worth noting from the 3.13 patch changes list:
Spies cannot be discovered when inside a ship
So you can hang around in a caravel in the rear waiting to pounce!

So jerm, tell us how you managed to lose your first PBEM?:w00t:

On Civics...

Quoting Konrad from the Bunker thread:
To raise another issue which I think we better start considering in time, which civics will we use?

Since we will be warmongering a lot, I'd say we definitely need either Theocracy or Vassalage. Having either of them means the difference between units starting on level 3 and level 2 (with barracks). Having both, though, is superfluous, as a unit would still be 3 XP away from level 4.

Which means, what other civics do we want? Vassalage competes with Bureaucracy, and Theocracy with Organized Religion. Which means, if we want to build units starting on level 3, we'd have to choose either Bureaucracy or Organized Religion.

I'm in favour of Organized Religion. Bureaucracy only gives a bonus to one city, while Organized Religion benefits every city. We'll very soon have 7 cities, and even more when the choice between the two becomes a reality. The whole continent is destined to become stamped with a big Omega before too long, making a great bonus at our capitol city a not-so-great proportional addition to our huge empire.
The Sacred Gospel.

Otherwise known as the Ministry of Information, or the Department of Propaganda, or the House of Truth.

This shall be my home base, my office, for spreading the good word of the dark side.

MWahahahhhahhahahahah :w00t:

Your Starting Position

Your start position is attached below.

You will need to let me know what you want to do on the first turn and what you want your password to be since I will have to play your first turn after the game setup.

You start with a settler, warrior and scout and 50 gold.

Game Speed will be normal, with AI difficulty at Noble.

Odds and Ends...

Heh, don't know if the titles shine through, so I thought this better than "Multiplayer for Dummies" which -I should add- certainly includes me...
