I always raze the cities and build my own. That way I get them exactly where I want and I don't have to worry about cities Flipping back or leaving enough defensive troops in enemy cities.

Can someone explain exactly how your rrep is damaged by razing cities???

They are in civ!
There was already a thread similar to this some where else. Anyways, what I find myself doing is that in the early wars, when culture is usually about even, I'll keep those cities, build the FP in the opponents capital, and all those cities are just as productive as mine in the industrial age. But after around education, when I usually start to fall behind slightly in culture, due to warring all the time (GOOOO Germany! Damn, those Panzers rock!)I'll usually raze and rebuil, or if the city has a wonder or doesn't have any resisters (fat chance) then I'll keep it and starve it. But then again, in the age of arillery, I find myself keeping more cities as the population is seldom more than 5 after my guns fall silent. Hope that helps your desisions of razing vs "rehabilitating"! :p

I don't know the exact mechanics of it. But I know that if you start razing cities a previously gratuitous AI civ will become furious in no time. And I'm not talking about the civ who's cities your burning, this even happens with your allies. I've never seen one break an alliance over this, but you won't get their vote at the UN.

The AI's go crazy when you capture a city. In my current game, I have a huge technical edge on the Celts. I captured a city of theirs and the poured cavalry at me- I must have destroyed 20 units. I sent in elite armored armies and they just shot the Celt cavalry to rags. I don't know how long it would have gone on because India stabbed me in the back and I made peace with the Celts. I am actually just marking time till I launch a starship but it is an intriguing idea.

I love the idea of transforming citizens into tax collectors and letting them starve themselves- seems ironic.

I battled the Iroquois in my current game and even though I was beating up on them, I had six cities "flip". I was outraged so I razed each one- Tamurlane did this; he was much more humane than Genghis Khan when he captured a city the first time but if it revolted- he butchered everyone and destroyed the city.

Advisor: "Sire, the peasants are revolting!"
King: "Yes, aren't they."

The biggest counter attack I've experienced was a couple of games ago.

Korea had most of a large continent on a large world. There was a bottle neck area which is where I chose to invade. I had tanks and mech. inf. backed by carriers to their cavalry and infantry. I took 2 cities in the bottom of the bottle neck and had my bombers take out the rails and roads at the other end to slow down the AIs counter attack until my transports could get back with reinforcements.

At one point I counted 63 Korean Cavalry units and 34 infantry units coming through the gap I'd blown in the roads. There were some obsolete units too. So there were over 100, Korean units coming at me. And that was just the units I could see.

I was sure glad of the gap I blew in the roads. It gave my artillery, ships and carrier based bombers time to work them over.
