Greetings...
I will NEVER pay money per turn for ANYTHING... Never have, never will.
Tech trading is good! I'll trade away every tech I have to a backward nation if they have even 1 tech I missed. Why? Because they obviously don't have the research facilities to even get to the NEXT tech before you do....
I try not to sell techs - I Try to trade them for other techs and it doesn't bother me in the least to trade 2,3,even 4 for 1...
About the ONLY time I sell them, is during the diaspora when world exploration becomes possible and I'm usually (not always) the first to the other pangea continent - and they are almost always an age behind! In that case, I'll pick the eventual conquorer of that continent, and sell them everything I've got over a course of turns, so that they can get the improvements in before buying the next ones... I'll sell them the economic techs first to get them to build those markets and banks - then a few turns later, I'll come back peddling the weapons techs for big nmoney.... That's when the big 100 gold a turn deals start rolling in and I'm awash with cash ( and usually succede in outspending my own capabilities!) (shucks I KNEW I should have built those banks first!)
If it's profitable, I'll deal with the other civs on that continent too, but usually a step behind... Depends on who's got the money, and Who is close to contacting the other civs on MY continent... Just before that happens, I'll make the rounds and sell all the contact infos to inspire the establishment of embassies, because that's when the fun begins!
Luxuries, I'll take anything for them, and if I have the corer on the market, the price goes up every 20 turns if they can afford it.. I'll almost ALWAYS renegotiate luxuries and rarely link them to other deals... I like being able to switch customers quickly...
Resources on the other hand, are almost always linked to some other deal, a ROP, a MPP, or a war... Oh, you need Saltpeter eh? Well, I'll maintain your supply ONLY so long as you maintain the war against the evil enemy... Make peace, and it's back to the middle ages with you!
I will almost never BUY needed resources. Those are reasons for going to war, or the Kancer... It would have to be a very extreme situation to get me to actually pay for the stuff! If I do, guess who I'm going to war with next!
As for Buying luxuries - I try to pay with another luxury if I can, or better yet a tech. Techs come cheap. Possibly a major resource, but only if it's a spare that I can't use Geopolitically... If I can't do that - Then my people just go without, as I don't like having them pulled out on me at a moments notice. I DO NOT LIKE seeing that message that says "We have Lost our source of Furs!" THAT message gets delivered to the Panzer armies!
Maps: Those are NOT one time deals! Rabi ! Maps are an every turn deal! You can sell or trade your map every turn!
Whenever you buy a map, you get an updated status report on the state of roads, resources, pollution, etc... That's vital planning info! I want that info every turn! Sure - the very FIRST time you sell your map, it's expensive - 100 gold or some such, but if you sell it for 10 gold to the SAME customer every turn for 10 turns, there's another 100 gold! During the diaspora - you can trade techs for maps and then sell those maps for huge bucks!
How to make more money? Sell interest bearing loans - Bo ahead and try it! Ask a civ that you just made a 20 turn deal on something else What will you offer for 100 gold - you will almost always get a 20% interest installment! The beauty of the deal too is that you can frequently get MULTIPLE such loans going at the same time with the same customer - In fact, you can bleed them to death that way!
