Does an AI ever call a vote once they've built the U.N.?

Signed,
Hopeful in Springfield.

Well, maybe I have hope in my current game, after all! How often? I mean, is it rare for them to do so? Or does the programming "make" them call for the vote in any sense? I have the most land area of any of the AI by far, so I would think I would be the other candidate?

Not necessarily. The eligibility rules are:

Owner of the United Nations
Any civ with 25% or more of the total land area (including coast, I think)
Any civ with 25% of more of the global population
If neither of the previous two conditions are met by any civ, then the second largest civ by population becomes eligible
The vote is not limited to two candidates, although that is the minimum. I don't recall ever seeing more than three. Note also that you must win an absolute majority of all votes including abstentions; a plurality is deemed inconclusive. With more than two candidates, this almost always happens, in my experience.

They'll call the vote, but keeping in mind that the AI knows everything, they'll only call it if they can win.

Perhaps they need to bring in something from the MoO series: You have the option of defying the choice of the UN and immediately everyone considers you a target and you're at war with everyone until either you or them are gone. Would make a nice twist

There's you an idea for cIV. Woohoo! UN is crap then anyway, if that's the case. They won't call a vote unless they KNOW they can win? What's up with THAT? That's like the computer doubling down when it KNOW'S it's going to blackjack.

Alpha centauri allowed global voting on things such as atrocities. Had atrocities been banned, nukes flying or nerve stapling your public turns the world against you (mostly in trade sanctions). If the atrocity ban is lifted, the world tends to lose alot of mass hehe
