I've just completed a PTW game and saw something strange: an AI worker would be on the job when suddenly, he would groan and drop dead! This happened three or four times, (Never to mine) what's going on?

I've only seen that happen once...playing the Japanese scenario. I just always thought the worker died of fright when he saw my "invisible" ninja.

I've seen it happen a lot. First I thought it was an enemy unit(3rd) attacking this civ, but I couldn't see it (FoW). But, then I saw one die in plain sight, so I figued it out.

I've seen it several times. Mostly when I'm invading. The AI seems to do it if there's no way to get the worker to safty in a destroy it rather then see it captured move.

It seems to me the AI puts too much value on workers. I usually get so many captured workers that I ignore them later in the game, unless they are in a square I want to go through. I'll leave them out as bait for AI units so they waste the turn capturing the workers rather then attacking something important. It's not as effective in Conquests, but still works.

I've seen that too, the AI doesn't want you to benefit from all the free labour...

I've also found the AI sometimes disbands workers that it captures from you, if you're likely to get them back in the next turn.

...or as I refer to it "murders them in cold blood!"

It gets my people riled up...and it really is what they're doing. Three atrocities in Civ 3...nuking, razing and murdering workers.

Not forgetting the fourth atrocity of the AI building pointless cities in the middle of the human player's land...

That is not an atrocity, it is the opposite of a Trojan horse. In stead of looking like a gift and turning out to be a menace, it looks menacing but turns out to be a gift (the city will flip in a matter of turns).

The AI also disbands workers when it runs out of money.
