Dolf:
It seems to me the AI puts too much value on workers.

I have to agree. Its still far too easy to force the AI into a trap with a "undefended" worker.

And maybe Hannibal is just an idiot! My troops were just passing within sight (On MY side of the fence) when they died (From fear of my mighty GIs?). In the last century of play, I went to war with the Carthaginians simply because I was sick of looking at them and took a major city. Three turns later my troops took his capital and menaced a large town on the oposit coast. He begged for mercy then.

Can you guess what saved him? No, you're wrong; it was neutral Cleopatra! She was wetting her panties because I had to cross her land to get to city #3. Hmph! And I had given her pityfull LITTLE four-city country luxuries for nothing and resorces at bargan rates just in case I had to cross her land! She even gained four land squares from the war, the ungrateful B****!

I should have whomped her too.......

Rabbi - good point about the culture flipping. I just find it annoying when the AI settles in the middle of 'my' land...

Gunboat - yeah, Hannibal is an idiot! What's with his dodgy beard?

Yes, the AI simply disband their workers if you have a chance of capturing them. I don't know how the conservation changed to soemthing quiet different....

I usually ignore workers myself, i build at least 2 for each city and thats its, and when i come to take enemy cities, i usually just disband any workers i gain, as i have so many workers on automated tasks, that they are hard to find and grab hold of and stop them working, once i managed to, and it took me 2 hours on a giant sized map ... but since my entire territory was railroaded, i only needed 4 or 5 active for pollution control!

I've seen military units die in the past too because the upkeep was too much for the AI treasury.

It's also possible for units to die from disease if they're in jungle or marsh.

Has anyone EVER seen AI units die because of disease? It seems like an EXTREMELY rare event that is not even worth thinking about

It's impossible to know if it's disease or they're just cutting back on costs, but I've had a couple of units perish to disease.
