That depends....How big is France? How much gold's in their coffers? I've had it both ways in my games. One civ awhile back bought some outdated MidA tech for something like 500gpt or something outrageous like that. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I had never gotten around to building Shakespeare's Theater?

Greetings...

Yea, it sounds like either they just can't really afford the rate they previously could...
OR, they are now more powerful that you WERE before.. So they think a better deal should be in their favor.
Or another case might be that they simply don't have the bigger population cities that they USED to have that actually need the luxuries to keep them happy...

Trading luxuries is like crack - once your cits get it, they want to keep getting it.

What you should really try in this case, is cutting off their supply for a couple of turns, making the AI either pay more entertainment costs, or a few of their cities go into revolt...
Then come back to the table with your crack luxuries!...

Trading luxuries is a double edged sword - remember that the AI civs are your enemies in the end...

Having a luxury is just like a temple! It has the same effect. If they have 20 cities, then selling them a luxury is worth the number of cities that DON'T have temples to them in maintaince costs... As long as they can save money by buying your luxuries, WHILE they build thier temples, then 20 turns later - They may not NEED your luxury any more...

Having 2 of them later, after they have completed all their temples, is like having a cathedral - etc. At least in respects to keeping the people happy... Of course it doesn't give them any culture, so while their cits are getting the benefits as if they HAD a cathedral, they are building one for real! Which is why they are willing to pay so much money per turn!

I found I could 'milk' more money from the AI only when they were doing well financially (ie huge treasury).

If they are broke, they probs won't/can't continue the deal at the same amount... unless of course you renew it for another 20 turns before they change their mind!

I usually offer a civ a techie to find out how their cash flows; when they wish to pay 14 gold and World Map I know they're stretching to the breaking point; when they offer 143 gpt I know they can afford more than amount X for a certain resource... I had a swell deal going with the Dutch in the latest Conquests GOTM... For some strange reason they desperately wished to trade for Saltpeter, and I got a Luxury and around 30 gpt for it, even though they couldn't build Cavalry yet!

Another way to ensure cashflow of at least one other civvie is limiting all your tech dealings to just that one civvie... This will cause it to drain the reserves of the other civvies, while you drain its reserves... Rest assured that global research will grind to a halt... You gotta be first in techies to do it though...

It IS a strange phenomenon; as if the AI cannot break off such deals when renegotiating is on...

psweet...

France is about in the middle score/size-wise, but second in techs, right behind me. I get the feeling that they're paying me lots (on THEIR turn because they can then trade it to Egypt and the Dutch. Which of course means that they have more to trade me for it. There's 6 civs total left in the game, Me (byzantines), France, Netherland and egypt are all fairly close and Roma and the Mayans are the last two, with the Mayans about to go the way of the Dinosaurs

Ok, let's face it. The AI has the mental capacity and stability of a raw potato. They're much better off dead!

I mean, jeez.

You: "You wanna keep buying our ivory for 30 gpt?"

Artifical Insanity: "GOODNESS, NO! I've never heard such an insulting offer in my life"

You: "Sure, I understand"

*close window*

You: "Heya, you want to buy our ivory for 40 gpt?"

Artifical Insanity: "Okey dokey"

Why can't they be SANE, just once?

IF the AI spends all that time building temples. "There's no need for me to build these temples, since I got that sweet sweet incense from that dude for reasonable price. Let's build barracks instead." And the price goes up up up...

Greetings...

I've noticed that when you have the corner on a particular luxury, the price will tend to go up on a renegotiate.

In the case, where they will NOT buy - They THINK it's worth much more than you are willing to settle for - They become insulted if you offer it to them at a discount - Insanity for sure!

In the case where you try to renegotiate and you either get a lower price or no deal, its either because they are shopping around and have found another source (in which case they WONT buy from you at all) or they are preparing to declare war on you.

You can forstall and keep the treaty going the war by accepting the old rate without renegotiating the deal...

It depends on how long you have been tradingm, who they are currently at war with, and if they have another source available...

Example: I was selling Iron to the Celts for centuries at huge rates linked with a right of passage agreement - because I placed an explorer on HIS Iron and his workers couldn't get to it to road it...
Every 20 turns the deal would come up, and I would renegotiate and he would offer more and more every time - even dumping in maps and other luxuries the last 2 rounds, even though none of his units needed Iron anymore! (he was well into the modern age!)

So if you control the market on that luxury, you command the price - If you don't - you will probably lose your customers unless the others simply don't have enough to supply all the other civs.
