I imagine this is pretty much determined by difficulty level. I play mostly Regent and all of my good games are accomplished after I've been in at least one Ancient Age war in where I can eliminate/weaken a neighbor or two to get a nice, fat, start. Of course this may not even be a possibility on Emporer and above what with the AI bonuses and all?

i personally like the modern age. the reasons:

1) the enemy is not going to pull out a much more advanced unit all of the sudden

2) lots of time to develop your army/cities

3) lots of money coming in from reduced science expenditures

the downside, of course, is that if you keep most of your fighting to the modern age, you've probably already lost before you get to brawl. oh well, who cares about points? :p also, massive enemy armies can make it somewhat, erm... less enjoyable.

on a related note, is it possible to turn off ALL win situations, so no one ever does?

Well, if you turned everything off, you'd probably end up playing until 2050 when you retire and whoever had the most points would get a histograph "win." Not the most exciting, maybe, but nothing to hang your head in shame over. And maybe there's just one or two players who like doing that!

I think war becomes more and more aggressive at later age, as in offensive units becoming stronger and cities defense bonus lower. I have to admitt warefares starting at industrial age are more pronouced. However, early warefare are more interesting, more tactical. That is to say at early age because of limited resources, wareafre are determined by units movement and terrins. At later age, warefare are determined by mass which are based on economy. I like early warefare.

Greetings...

Well, I like them all, but the early modern is my favorite. When armor is first available. Artillery ( range 2) and railroad completely change warfare. Making it possible to go on the offensive with defensive units. You can do some classic Napoleonic battles before the slugfest trench warfare that Infantry spawns. Cavalry has had it's day.

If I absolutely have to give any age, I'd give the middle age, but basically I like them all. I think any time is a good time to go to war (though never unprepared).
The reason I chose the middle age is because that is the war in which I get the decisive advantage over the AI, or, when I am in high level games, where the AI has a chance of finishing me off, but the war is sufficiently protruded that I still have a chance to save myself with daring tactics and bold diplomacy.

I voted industrial, but I'm really up for any age...

I like Ancient warfare because of the aforementioned limited resources and large, unexplored regions. You're a fresh, new civ, clawing your way out from anarchy to build a solid empire, and you know next to nothing about who is in the way - except that they are  You have to be careful in your planning and production or you will fail against a more powerful opponent.

I like medieval warfare too because it is in this age that empires are consolidated and fortified - I rarely fight decisive wars of conquest in the middle ages, but I frequntly have limited wars over strategic territories, resources, and overseas continents as they become available.

I like early industrial warfare for its purity - there are three main units, the three arms of combat, infantry, cavalry, and artillery. If you are well industrialized, your armies can be quite huge, conscription can rapidly fill in the gaps, and the enemy is usually not afraid to commit dozens of outdated units into gruelling meat grinder assaults. Sail transports combined with ironclad escorts finally make the high seas a realistic battleground, and quite often will I be moving whole divisions overseas to defend or extend some valuable colony.

As late industrial and then the modern age comes in, I don't like the basic set-up one bit. You are left with only a handful of useful units and a scatter of interesting, and sadly ineffective fluff like Marines and Paratroopers... Which is why I mod every unit from Infantry on to stay useful in the modern age (save for propellor fighters and tanks, which are replaced by their modern counterparts). I mean, come on... Stealth bombers taking over the role of regular strategic bombardment? Stealth fighters standing a chance against any combat-worthy aircraft? Marines and Paras unable to dent an unsupported armour unit? I still believe the Modern age was rushed to get Civ3 onto the shelves before Christmas - just look at that 'orrible tech tree

Ah well...

I voted for Middle Ages. The multitude of Knight variants makes it that much more interesting a time. That and wait half an era and the Conquistador comes into play

I voted for the Modern Age although I agree with RabiAkiva, I like the variety and was hard pushed to chose a favourite. And...
I think any time is a good time to go to war (though never unprepared).

I like to follow this philosophy when playing , I've got to work on my preparedness though! :p

I mainly swung to modern combat becuase I'm a big fan of the tank in general, I so love having the ability to attack more than once with a tough unit when trying to capture those enemy cities!
I still believe the Modern age was rushed to get Civ3 onto the shelves before Christmas - just look at that 'orrible tech tree

I couldn't agree more though... I've always hated the modern age tech tree, they could have done so much more with it, its much smaller than back in Civ II.
