I am playing Civ 3 vanilla and I have never really used diplomacy because - I can't figure out how to establish an embassy!

I always get that message after discovering writing, but I never have enough money at that point to start an embassy, even if I wanted to. Then later on, I can never get that screen to pop up again.

I am sure I am missing something really obvious, but can someone please help!

P.S. remember, I am using civ 3 vanilla

I believe in vanilla you can open the establish embassy screen by right clicking on your capital(the label with the star etc...) and you should see an option. It might also be double click instead, it's been awhile.

In the right lower corner with the small map you have few tiny buttons. One of them is D if you click on it embassy menu will pop up (if you encountered any other CIV).

Diplomacy is a crucial factor to vitory in CIVIII!

It is indeed a double-click on the star by your capital. Then if you've built the intelligence agency, it's a double-click on the pentagon where it was built to insert a spy...most times it's your capital as well but sometimes not.
