I’m sure someone has already said this at some point, but it seems to me that one of the big differences between lower level games and higher level games (Emperor+) is the necessity of trading techs.
When I started playing Civ III, I would almost never trade techs. On rare occasions when I didn't complete a wonder before another civ, and could get a wonder-enabling tech so I didn't waste shields, I would likely trade for that tech. Of course, that was in the early days, when I was a Wonder-fixated newbie (an entirely different topic).
Anyway, at the higher levels, you HAVE to trade techs. There's just no way around it. In fact, you not only have to trade techs, but you have to learn to get the maximum out of your trades. I would say that developing trading skills at the Regent and Monarch levels is probably the best thing you can do to win at higher levels. Yes, I know that efficiently managing workers can make a HUGE difference in success, and I know that warmongering skills are essential at any level above Monarch, but...regardless of your style, I think it may be next to impossible to win higher-level games without well-developed trading skills.
No specific examples...just wish someone had told me that in my early days of Civ III. If they had, I likely would have been able to compete at higher levels much sooner.
