Okay guys, I FEEL your pain. I too have lost armies to culture flips. ONCE . . . MAYYYBEEE, twice. But no more.
Do I turn it off. Hell no! I like a realistic game, and I'm gonna argue that it is MORE realistic with it on, despite the simplified way it is put into practice currently. I cannot disagree that it could be tweaked, and it would be neat to have to "fight against the insurrection" and all of that. But realistically, that would add levels of complexity to the game that could/should be fleshed out in other areas first: namely, a decent tactical battle screen ::: You move your units into a square adjacent to an enemy, you can click on the tactical screen next turn. The tactical screen comprises all 12 squares occupied by the two stacks of units blown up into 48 squares. Your units are divisible into thirds, and you can move them as you see fit . . . i.e., actual platoon/battalion neighborhood level tactics in addition to the Division Province level we are currently restricted to.
Re: culture flip: warmongering strategy: you'd better raze. Otherwise, slow down, build culture, and go for a different kind of victory, just like in the real world.
As actual recent world events demonstrate, even when you are fighting for the right thing, "conquering" and "liberating" a militarily MUCH weaker soveignty is not as easy as simply deploying a large or technological sophisticated army in the place. You gotta make the locals HAPPY afterward too!

tones (9/1/2009) I was minded to compare this site to a sort-of-private Facebook, but, on reflection, that's not right . . . Nope. Here is a forum to exchange views and discuss topics and maybe have some literary fun; post some interesting pics (not Megabits of family krap); flag up some internet sites of Interest; pass on the occasional joke. To me, (struggling for analogy here) it's bit more like a quiet and cosy pub with locals you know and the occasional visitor from "outside"; thick stone walls and a cellar full of well-kept ale. Facebook, on the other hand, is some awful massive city-centre club that serves Fosters lager. And, you know what? I am not unhappy with that analogy. I prefer the pub.
