Is it just me, or is Shakespeare's Theatre the singlemost difficult Wonder to successfully win the race in of them all!?

I must have been beaten to it by one or two turns maybe 40 times now!!

ARRHHHGGGHHHDDDHHGHHGHG!!!!

How annoying. Especially for a thespianophile such as myself.

Pre-build. That's how to get it. Unfortunately you can't use the Palace or Forbidden Palace to pre-build with it in your capital. Typically, I'll save an improvement that takes a while, either a bank, university, or cathedral ( or sell one of the above) and when I'm down to one less turn to research Free Artistry than it takes to build Shakespeare's I'll start the pre-build. It gives you about a 4 turn jump on it. Another tactic I'll use (for this and other wonders) if my city is at size 12, I'll starve it for a few turns to gain the extra shields. You can often lose a food or two a turn and not lose population for about 10 turns or so while gaining 2-4 shields a turn depending on terrain.

Combine both methods and you should have little trouble getting Shakespeares or any other Wonder you're looking for.

After you DO get Shakespeares, you have the option of making the city either a production powerhouse or a trade one: Make it lean and mean with a max population of 20 and maximize production or irrigate EVERYthing and use the excess specialists for research, gold or Civil Engineers when you get Replaceable Parts

Shakespeares is a LOT more valuable now that it allows size 3 cities

Thanks ShadowKat.

Yeah, I typically pre-build, but I guess I lose track when it comes to late middle ages and forget to pre-build for Shakespeare's.

For that matter, whenever I DO it still seems to go to the Spanish by 2 turns!

Whats this about "size 3 cities?"

This may well be C3C only, although my memory is poor now as to what features existed in Civ Vanilla.

Growing past size 12 as a result of Shakespear is a C3C thing only.

Since shakespeares theatre comes up rigth along the time many other wonders do (I often get economics then free artistry right after) I do a little trick to make sure shakespeare ends up in my capitol (As it is often my city with research boosting wonders like Capernicus's obs... The trade from the extra squares you can use past 12 have an amazing effect).

Pre economics, begin building a palace in a high production city. When economics is discovered, start building adam smiths trading company in your capitol. When Free artistry is discovered, switch your capitol over to Shakespeares theatre and then switch the palace over to adam smiths trading co. That usually ensures I get both wonders and Shakespeare's theatre ends up being in the most useful city.

Nice summary Seared! Its really fairly simple, but the two parts of the game that I continue to find somewhat of a brain-strain, are planning the timing of pre-build wonders to beat the AI on higher levels, and anticipating AI Tech development for those nifty slingshot ahead of everyone trading sessions!
