do you typically go to war with each AI?

...I realize this is modified by who you are, the type of map and the like, but just looking to open up a discussion on this...

I will attack for a resource then gather my forces for an all out attack for the 2nd war. if i don't need any resources, i wipe them out completely.

Twice is usually the norm for me, especially in the earlier stages of the game. I try to deal a critical blow to cripple the ennemy civ and leave remote cities (on other islands or too hard to defend) to be picked up later.

In the later ages, I try to go to war only once, but it's not always possible, because I hate changing back from democracy. Then again, I deal a severe blow, trying to cut the different ressources from the civ, regroup, replenish my stock of tanks/modern armors and go at them a second time. There is almost never the need for a 3rd strike.

That is my strategy on pangeas (the map I play the almost exclusively), so I forgot a little how I used to do it on continents, altought IIRC it's pretty much the same.

I'm a combination type. My goal is always to wipe them out the first time, but circumstances may come up that require me to offer peace, such as everyone hating me and joining the enemy, or finding out that the enemy has 3 times larger military than I do and my resources dwindling. My first two goals are to attack the cities that have wonders in them and have resources surrounding them, preferably luxury items (if I have the strategic items already), If I can stretch it out a little farther I go for their strategic items to cripple them for the next time around. There haven't been a lot of times where I could wage war to extinction on my own with another civ at the first try, unless they are significantly smaller and nearby.

I'm a peaceful type that only goes to war if I have to. But if someone declares war on me I will make it a mission to wipe them off the face of the planet. This usually takes only two wars. I will do as much damage as possible during the initial war. Sometimes I may not be in a position to do much during the first war, or I may not be able destroy them completely. In this case I will bide my time until I'm sure that I can finish them. I will then wait for them to stupidly attack again on their own, or will sometimes goad them with spies.

Although theres always exceptions (which makes civ so interesting.. never same twice in a row), I prefer the 2 attack option. First cripple them... Then sign a surrender deal where they give you any techs (or cities) that you can possibly get. Later on in the game when they once again become an annoyance, kill them off.

If I'm ahead in tech, I'll try to eliminate them as fast as possible in one swoop

Usually I go for the 2 kill technique. At higher levels its very difficult to wipe out a civ early with all the others breathing down your neck. So I'll target key resources and block land expansions. They never recover

However, very early in the game I have been able to wipe out a civ before other civs get too close for comfort.

i like to form aliances with all the small nations to beat up the one big nation. he has to use resouces to fight them and i come in and pummel him and get as much of his land as possible. problem is i become the big guy and must defend later on. i am in a game where i am surrounded by 4 neighbors. i destroyed 2 of them so now i only have 2 very big neibors. the vikings are in between me and germany so right now we are trying to finish him off. problem is i am in a war started by those darn MPP with my northern neibor. i also try to get to the end of the tech tree first so that i can build a huge army and grab as much land as possible from eveybody else.

Usually, I will only attack to gain needed resources, then be as peaceful as possible.

Of course, this usually leads to someone attacking me, at which point I decide that their country is lebensraum. I like wiping them out down to the last city and either letting some AI kill them in the future or get someone near them into an alliance so I don't take the rep hit.

One fell swoop with nukes and an all out invasion of all AI or many little wars...
