I'm slow to anger, but those who betray me will be given no quarter. It only takes one war for me. There's a reputation hit involved, but that's an acceptable price to pay for retribution. Plus, it would probably be worse to have the stain of multiple war declarations on one's hands, plus a vengeful rival just waiting to jump on some other civ's alliance network.

And I'd like to take this moment to decry the rep hit as well. Sure it may act as a (very slight) deterrent to warmongering, but as long as the war is "just" (no ROP rape or such), shouldn't the player be allowed to wipe their rival from the planet? WTF do those AI players think that war is all about, anyway?

lebensraum

wow, i have never heard that word before. i guess it helps to know crazy words when writing all those stories and 6746 posts. for all those who are as ignorant as me, here is the definition:

le·bens·raum n.

1. Additional territory deemed necessary to a nation, especially Nazi Germany, for its continued existence or economic well-being.
2. Adequate space in which to live, develop, or function.
3. space sought for occupation by a nation whose population is expanding.

Sorry about that. I've seen it now so often in things on the History Channel and such, that I didn't think about it. It's actually German, and is one of about five German words I know. It's been co-opted into English but it's rarely used outside of historian/political scienctist/utter geek circles. Means 'living space' in German. Sorry if I sounded snooty for having used it...

A "just" offensive war???

Are any countries currently on this planet allowed to wipe another country just because they don't like it? No.

As soon as a country tries to invade another, there is a coalition of nations ready to jump in and defend that said country. Does Kuwait ring a bell?

Heck even the allies in WWII after defeating the germans did not wipe them out of the planet.

Reputation hits are a pain, I'll give you that (hey, I'm the warmonger's warmonger ), but IMO they have their place and should stay.

Definitely a combination which (mostly) depends on the level. Lower levels are more peaceful than the higher ones.

well you are not actually wiping them off the planet but taking their population from them. it might not be a consensus, but many feel the iraq war is justified, although some countries have given us a 'rep hit'. maybe you get a rep hit from some and not from others (or is that how it already is?) and how can the computer tell if there is rape and such?

Definitely a wide variety of answers...

I typically am the beat them down to minimal lands (read: what I can easily get to in the first war while leaving a manageable target for the second and final war).

I agree with TC though, the higher the level the more wars there are, especially with the human on the short end of the stick. This one, I went to war with Japan, China, and Rome, once or twice each, for the sole purpose of snagging cities/locations with resources.

Level and who you are does make a difference in the whole thing...

Usually only if they declare war on me first.

I've noticed that out of 4 games that I've played sequentially that if I only make war on those who declare war on me first...my reputation is always good enough for a diplomatic victory for whoever's left on the map (usually including survivors of my vengence).

Don't apologise! I think it's fantastic to see such words used in discussions. If the word is more concise than anything English has on offer then go for it!

often i try peace, and go to war a few reasons:
1. resources
2. territory
2a. if i feel esp small or crowded
2b. if there is a giant i need to stay with
2c. science is going slow
3. my whole strategy is to win domination or conquest
4. to keep someone from winning
5. if he pisses me off
an others i cant think of
i usually try to make it one, quick, war (preferably Hyperkrieg). if i feel overextended and theyre putting up too much resistance, ill peace, wait, attack
