id like to see city liberation between allies and maybe occupation forces rather than outright city cature!!

by this i mean
while at war any citys you take while they give resistance wouldnt be under control of the conquring civ but instead occupied by there forces without the culture borders after all the civs lost a city not its identity. but when peace is made if the attacking side wins then they claim there city an can use it normally.

taking ww2 for example!

germany takes paris an so is occupied but teh british/american allies take it back! now in civ paris is british/american but really its a french city an should become french! your allies shouldnt gain your land just cause you lost it first
(how many times have you lost a city an had an ally take it back before you could get a guy there - to often)

no ofcourse when britain/america an rusia beat the germans we also gave germany back there lands (sort of) this too was an could be occupation where tehy rule themselfs but are generally under your control after the surrender!

so the extra option should be there for make peace an keep gains or surender an suffer occupation for a while untill you become a nicer world civ.

maybe i havent explained this the way im thinking but im sure someone will understand

Yea, I guess this option works in the whole "all we want is peace 'real' world", but how would it work in a game where the goal is just outright doing better than your opponents and conquest? Why in civ 3 would you want to put in the effort of invading a city if you're just gonna give it back?

The way to inact this in the game, is as follows:

Lets say you're the Americans and its a WWII going on in an Epic Game. You realize that if you actually occupy Western Europe once you beat the Nazis, you'll be crushed with maintenance fees and corruption. So, for a few years after taking back Paris, etc., you keep it under your control, then you give it (you can give away cities) back to the French, Ducth, etc., but conditional on a ROP, and after you have built airfields and fortresses in their territory.

It should be possible to negotiate for longer ROPs than 20 turns but ah well.

And of course, getting the AI to play this way (hand back a city after they take it, e.g.,) is a dream!

You can give cities back now. The only change I would add is a rep boost for doing so depending on gov types of the different civs.

This has been mentioned before, some time ago. There are similar mechanics in Star Trek: Birth of the Federation. You gain a rep boost for giving back a system to the original owner. You also gain points for capturing a minor race system and then letting them get their freedom (i.e the Federation freeing Bajor from the Cardassians and giving them their independence).

A long time ago there was a thread suggesting all the various mechanics/things from other games that would make sense to have in Civ...

IF, and with real emphasis on the IF part of that 'if', you could get the AI to play along with it that would be a nice feature...the problem is the AI doesn't have a way to 'see' the future of that city (in terms of Strategic, economic, cultural, etc...values) or the costs involved. In Civ III (yes I'm well aware this is the Civ IV suggestion board) as it is much in real life, Land is Power. The more land you have the better chances for undiscovered resources, more cities, more growth, more production, more money....did I say more Power?. Since the goal of the game is accumulation of power (for most all civs) getting the AI to understand benifits of 'good will' between neighbors is a hard sell.

the better chances for undiscovered resources

unfortunately, there is no "undiscovered" resources for the AI.

Occasionaly i do give cities back to their original owner, but only when their pressed all around by culture and are crippled by corruption and waste. I think in order for any of ths to work, civ4 will have to be a completely differnt game, maybe more realistic in size...
