Whay an earth does every other civilization want to wage war against me and noone else?

Even civilizations on the other side of the globe will send huge armies through the territories of like 5 other AI civs just to get to me!

I am constantly on the defensive, I am only just able to hold them all off. But I am sure that they would fare much better if they concentrated on fighting their neighbours rather than
traveling all the way across the globe to fight me!

I am playing the Teturkan Test of Time scenario game (but only on Chieftan).

I am only like the third most powerful civ, yet they all want to gang up on me! Any ideas why? I almost never sneak attack my oponents so my reputation must be good. I do not have many embassies though, do these help?

First of all, welcome to the boards, garethmann.

I am only like the third most powerful civ, yet they all want to gang up on me!

When you say you are the 3rd most powerful, do you say this because you are the 3rd in points, or because of the powergraph, under the "power" section?

If it's the first, you have to be aware that points are given mainly on the size of your empire, so if you control half the map but do not have a single unit you'll have a much much higher score then a civ with 10 cities and 150 modern armors, but you'll be obviously much weaker.

As for the AI ganging up on you is probably because they see you as weak, unit wise. This can happen very easily if you focus too much on grabbing territory at first, at the detriment of stacking up on units also. You have to balance these 2 carefully. An indication of your strenght compared to others can be found in the military advisor (F3) screen. Choose a civ on the right part of the screen and he'll tell you if your army is weaker, average or stronger then the chosen AI's civ.

My advice is to build alot more units, they'll act as a deterrant for them picking up on you.

Let us now if this works.

welcome. one way that helps is to build many units. you can build workers, too, as the AI looks only at numbers, not quality. thus, they while 200 swordsmen may deter the AI, 15-20 modern armor/mechs will not, at least not if the AI has the usu amount of units

Welcome to the community and the wonderful world of Civ3.

Frustrating isnt it. Just think as you go up the levels it gets worse

Definately get embassys. Will tell you the AI's attitude to you.

Learn to trade with them. Learn to offer them gifts such as a map of your land - ONLY after every AI civ has found you and mapped your territory.

Cheers
S

First of all, you have to be #1 and they'll never pick on you. But if you are not, the tables can turn very easily and diplomacy is the answer in advance. Make sure you trade with your neighbors and thus ensuring a favorable attitude among them.

But if that hasn't worked. Then building up an army is the way to go. And while you are at it, you might want to swap to monarchy in order to be able to bare the upkeep

I might be wrong, but I seem to recall that this was corrected in one of the patch and that workers are no longer used in that calculation.

It's the way the AI is programmed. The relations with the player is regarded as the number 1 priority and they will not sit as nuetral towards you... They'll either be a friend or an enemy and it's your choice to decide. Ignoring them and not setting up trade will result in them hating you. Simply put, if you don't make the effort to make them friends, they will always (ALWAYS) degrade into enemies.

If you meet another civ, they will slowly move to hostile as each turn passes without contact. Make an embassy with them and offer a right of passage... It's a good start. Since you have a positive agreement, they will move towards friendly. I know sometimes the right of passage will be broken, but most of the times an AI will not declare war on you (seemingly randomly) if you've made the effort to contact and trade with them.

Sorry JF, thats unfortunately completely wrong. The AI uses a formula based on the attack and defence of each unit to determine strength. rather rough, but it works:

(Unit attack * 2 + unit defence) * hitpoints.

For example, lets go small. you have 2 archers and 3 warriors (all veteran for examples sake). This will read as:

archer = 4hp * (2 attack * 2 + 1 defence) = 4*3 = 12. so each verteran archer = 12 points. a warrior put through the same formula is worth 8.

3 warrios + 2 archers = 48. The AI then takes it's army and puts that through the same calculation above. Thier number is compared to yours... To make it easy, lets say your army adds to 100.

If their army is 25% stronger than yours (theres is 125 and your is 100), they are read as stronger. If their army is 25% less than (75 in this case), they will be read as weaker than you. 75% - 125% is read as about the same.

Hopefully thats clear. Theres a very good post on civfanatics (if I can find it) that shows the testing and results that led to this info.
