OK, to follow up on my recent successes with tricky ways to beat the AI with RoPs, in my latest outing I decided I needed to try it with the nuclear option. This is something I had never done before. and it got me my first Monarch conquest win.

In fact, I had little choice, as my Chinese empire lagged in size and power from even early in the game. The game was a standard map, two continents with four civs each: Russia, China, Egypt and Greece on one and Babylon, India, France and Persia on the other. Russia was the early leader on my continent, and although China was next in size, it was lacking in key resources. First no iron, then later no saltpeter or oil; that AI knowledge of all resources hurt in this one. Cleo and Alex, although relatively small, were able to grab everything available. Some nifty trading corrected the early problems, and some quick city grabs from both fixed the problem permanently. Then sit back, maximize production and wait until we gain the tech advantage. Meanwhile, India goes up in smoke without ever finding the other continent.

Mao's surging scientific civ gets to Navigation second, but for some reason Catherine has not sent out any explorers. A stroke of luck there; Babylon is only two Galley turns away from China's only eastern port. Mao finds Hammy, X-man and Joan first. They're way behind in tech, of course, but we get the rep boost and the money from all the diplo trading. Joan is down to about five cities, and Babylon and Persia have apparently been at war more or less forever. Mao gets chummy with Alex and trades for oil, and then makes a run for MT and tanks. China gets there first, and also to Flight. A massive air fleet and ground army makes short work of Egypt and Greece after that. Persia knocks out a few more French cities, and China takes the last one for an outpost on that continent. At the same time, Babylon is falling to the increasingly mighty Persians, leaving huge stretches of unclaimed land. Russia gets to them first. We lose our French outpost to Persia, who came in briefly and relatively ineffectively with the Greeks. And then there were three.

Hmmm, air and ground superiority have been achieved; we also need sea advantage. I begin to build the biggest navy I have ever assembled, and for the first time build subs. Lots of them, and nuclear ones. We start to build a few tactical nukes; and then we get the Cure for Cancer and finally spring a Golden Age. We get Satellites and ICBMs halfway through the GA, and by the time it's over we have enough nukes to blast every city on the map with a good few left over. We're gonna need that cancer cure. Heh heh.

All is peaceful, and we have an RoP with Cathy. We station armed subs all around her territory, and MAs in it, just outside the blast radius of every city. We have a good few waiting around Persia too. The Persian inland cities will be hit with ICBMs.

So - Cathy first. We declare war and hit every single city with a nuke. The pollution warning goes bright red. There's a surprise. Removing Russia from the map takes a total of three turns. She does manage to hit three of my cities with nukes though, but at this point, the fat lady is already warming up (but so is everybody on the planet). Just as we wipe out Russia, Persia declares war. Dumb move. A good thing we stationed those subs ahead of time. But the X-man has virtually no fleet. His early attack wipes out all my MAs that have gone through Russian cities on his continent, though, so we need to get more ground units in quickly. We proceed as with Russia - every Persian city gets nuked. And a few of them several times. By the time the third transport-load of MAs hits the continent, Persia has no spare units for attack purposes. And with no fleet to speak of, he can't use the three tactical nukes he's built.

By 1995, Mao is alone on the globe, but he's made a desert of it in the process.

ROFL, nice story Pres... The end line is the best. Mao - ruler of a scorched earth.

Did you find riders useful?

Nice diplo usage for the resources early pres... From your style of play, I think you're more than ready to take emporer on. Good job man

Usually I love to use the Rider, but not this time. IIRC, I built a total of three of them, and none of them ever saw engagement. I hit Chivalry relatively late, and decided to forgo war at that point for the chance to develop my cities. During the Middle ages I was churning out universities, courthouses and banks like crazy.

And yep, the jump to Emperor is next up for me...

If you look at the numbers involved, this time frame is by far the best time to sit back and develope. The offence has the numerical edge
Prior to fuedalism, the most common attack will be swords vs spearmen (3 vs 2), when in the medieval era, the most common attack is a 4 vs a 3 (or eventually 4 with muskets) which when fortified is now in the defenders favor.

Well played by the sounds of it. Congrats

Oh, and the best use (and nearly only) that i've found for riders that makes them stand way above the other special knights is if you through 3 elite into an army. I had the joy of taking this rider army through and ancient era civ and couldn't stop laughing at the spearmens complete inability to defend vs the army and the AI's complete unwillingness to try to team up on it and knock it down. If I remember right, it was the hittites I was taking out... The images of the warchariot falling apart brought joy. hehe. Addit: it's the 4 movement and ability to attack mulitple times that made this so fun
