I've been reading into the future cIV game, and what strikes me as interesting is that the AI will be required to respect your territory or declare war. Needless to say this throws in another concept of strategy play. Figure the scenario in which you can block off a huge continent from the AI by building a line of cities to block land access without crossing your borders. Something very interesting considering you can effectively take advantage of settling an entire land mass without AI involvement ... or until they build galleys or whatever unit that will be the first transportable ship.

It will be great. In CIV 3 AI don't care about the trees pass. It's really ennoying.

Sounds like a good innovation. I hate it when in Civ III the AI's wandering troops (usually the settler/spearman pair) wander through your territory, usually blocking your roads. You can order them out, but next turn they're back! Maybe you should be allowed to capture them.

This is where one of my suggestions will be available: toll. You can ask let a civ through and ask him some gold per turn. This way you can block sea routes too.

You can benefit from a war as well: imagine two civs at war with each other. One civ to your North and one civ to your south. You can give them both a RoP for gold per turn. Your borders will become much more important.

Great Artists can give your cities a cultural boost. They will give you +1000 cultural points instantly. Needless to say that you can use them in combination with this strategy to close sea and land routes.

Addit: imagine a just-built city: 0 cultural points to 1000 cultural points. That's a big progress.

Maybe you should be allowed to capture them.

And to sell them of course.

In diplomacy, it is now possible to negotiate peace between two Civilizations which are at war with each other. On the other hand, it is also possible to make two other Civs go to war, even if you do not wish to get involved at all.

This makes it much easier to apply the strategy: just let the civ to the North and to the south make war with each other and ask them some money to let them pass through your territory.

While Closed Borders mean that other missionaries cannot enter your lands and spread their religion, it also means that you will not be able to trade with other Civilizations.

This makes the strategy much less useful.

OK, the strategy works of course: you can set your borders open to everyone except the civs who are at war. Then you can ask them to pay some money for your borders. You'll be able to trade with everyone then.
