I do hate it -HATE it- that during negotiations there is no optimize button to find out how many pennies will be just enough to satisfy the other party... Oh, this deal is almost enough for ye? Great! How about if I add 10 gold? No... 20? No... 35 then? No? Okay okay, 60! Yes? Hmmm, maybe 50... yes? Et cetera ad infinitum... Grrr...

It interferes with a stream-lined game experience... It is mind-numbing... It is silly... Do end it, please...

A lot of times, I'll just see what they want for the deal, and then accept it, not milking it for all it's worth, and sometimes, even getting slightly ripped off. It's best not to haggle sometimes, you know, to get things off on a friendly, trustworthy note. Along those same lines, sometimes the AI will offer to pay you 446 gpt for Atomic Theory. Those deals you accept as well.

For lack of an optimize button, I have developed an optimization technique for haggling:

Suppose you start at the price of 128 and this price must be lowered. Take half: 64. If the price must be lowered again, take half again: 32. If it must be higher, go up half the difference: 96. And that is how you go on. Always half the difference, up or down, depending on the reaction you got.

Suppose you want to buy a tech and the price is 128 and you want ot bring it down. Suppose the optimal price is 74. The bargaining goes:
128? OK
64? Too cheap
96? OK
80? OK
72? Too cheap
76? OK
74? OK
73? Too cheap
74 -- sold

Going down 5 gp per offer will take more steps.

Rabi, that is the most logical method, much like when testing electronic circuits for problems you are eliminating half the difference at each step... It gets tougher when your trying for that last couple gold on a large amount per turn bid though...

The part that gets to me of that is the process involved in adding / subtracting gold more than that it has to be done in order to get or save the maximum... A more graceful system in gold transactions, and I wont mind not having optimize buttons.

I've done the narrowing down part, but have found (under normal diplomatic circumstances) you can lower what they ask by 25% (on the gold end) and be very close. The same holds more true if you are asking them what they'll give you for something ... except you add 25%.

Uhm, the point is not that you can quite easily deal with the problem (if that's what it is); the point is that it is very tedious to check with 8 to 12 civs regularly to find out what the best deals are... Especially because it is completely unnecessary...

What's that you put up, Roadkill? Can't easily download stuff... And I just saw a book which had a pet cat called... Roadkill!

Just so you know... Culture is what that opening bid is based from. The higher your culture compared to theirs, the closer to the 'optimal' trade will be offered to you.

Strange note... I've had a few offers made from AI's that if you try to renegoiate for less money, they'll want more, but that normally involves MPP's and ROP's
