im a total civ noob, so i figure you guys can give me some helpful advice.
im the romans, and once again im alone and all the ai's are together, so very limited trading at the begining. this is my first game at warlord (i said im a noob) so i decided to be more milirastic instead of simply sitting by and losing.
the game starts out terribly, i wasnt prepared for the rate the ai expands. so by the time they had 3 cities, i had 1. i freaked out, and made a TON of settlers, and put cities all over the place. my score catches up a little, but not much. now, im pretty much entirely lacking any military, and i was put in a terrible place so i had no rescources. once i aqquire some iron, i start building legionairies like mad. i find the greek border, and i decide to pick on them. the site of my entire military (which by now is large) streaming towards the greek border is encouraging. so the war starts when i slaughter a warrior hanging out just outside a greek city. a HUGE battle ensues, where a legionary makes a leader, and i rename him eisenhour, only for him to get killed. the leader triggers a golden age. everything is going good, i have to quell the resistors in the city i eventually capture with heavy casualities, but its seeming pretty good. so i decide to try to make the switch from depostism to the republic. my civilization was in anarchy for i think 7 or 8 turns. i was gaining 1 gold per turn with depotism, and i was losing 46 gold per turn with the republic. so i decided to go deaper within the greek border, and to attack another city before preceeding to athens. my army is almost back from the city of its creation. one by one, each of my cities start rioting. they are just plain sick of the war. and im losing 20 gold per turn in my golder age, science at 50% and happyness at 20%. i decide i have to abandon my war. i manage to milk out a world map with the greeks though. alexander is still furious at me, but it doesnt matter. im now im 3rd place out of four, only ahead of those greeks i just beat around. we both suffered medium casualties, but he didnt have a big an army as me, so i could have probably progressed farther. currently, all my troops are stationed around the greek border for my next assault. in the mean times, i think ill start relations with egypt. more updates soon to come.

If one lesson you learn from this particular game.
Never change government, unless, maybe, your a religious civ; during a Golden Age. You only get 1 per game - 20 turns - a chance to catch up or pull ahead. By going into anarchy you waste so much of that time
a HUGE battle ensues, where a legionary makes a leader, and i rename him eisenhour, only for him to get killed. the leader triggers a golden age. everything is going good, i have to quell the resistors in the city i eventually capture with heavy casualities, but its seeming pretty good. so i decide to try to make the switch from depostism to the republic. my civilization was in anarchy for i think 7 or 8 turns. i was gaining 1 gold per turn with depotism, and i was losing 46 gold per turn with the republic.
Question: When you went to battle against the Greeks. Did you check the F8 screen to see how you fared against them?
Also did you check to see what your Military adviser said F3?
keep em coming. We where all civ noobs once, some of us still are
Cheers

i freaked out, and made a TON of settlers and put cities all over the place.
Freakin is almost never helpful, but it sure makes the game more exciting eh?
One thing you can consider when you are behind on cities is whether having 3 cities could be a better use of settlers, time, and strategy than say 5 or 6. A well-placed city, and a city that fits with the others is very useful!
i was put in a terrible place so i had no rescources. once i aqquire some iron, i start building legionairies like mad. i find the greek border, and i decide to pick on them.
Did they start intimidating you? Is that what you mean by a "terrible place?" Generally, it is best to avoid going to war unless you (a) absolutely must, or (b) know you can win + (c) know you will gain from doing it. The info screens Steve mentioned are critical for helping you decide these questions.

tones (9/1/2009) I was minded to compare this site to a sort-of-private Facebook, but, on reflection, that's not right . . . Nope. Here is a forum to exchange views and discuss topics and maybe have some literary fun; post some interesting pics (not Megabits of family krap); flag up some internet sites of Interest; pass on the occasional joke. To me, (struggling for analogy here) it's bit more like a quiet and cosy pub with locals you know and the occasional visitor from "outside"; thick stone walls and a cellar full of well-kept ale. Facebook, on the other hand, is some awful massive city-centre club that serves Fosters lager. And, you know what? I am not unhappy with that analogy. I prefer the pub.
