im a total civ noob, so i figure you guys can give me some helpful advice.
im the romans, and once again im alone and all the ai's are together, so very limited trading at the begining. this is my first game at warlord (i said im a noob) so i decided to be more milirastic instead of simply sitting by and losing.

the game starts out terribly, i wasnt prepared for the rate the ai expands. so by the time they had 3 cities, i had 1. i freaked out, and made a TON of settlers, and put cities all over the place. my score catches up a little, but not much. now, im pretty much entirely lacking any military, and i was put in a terrible place so i had no rescources. once i aqquire some iron, i start building legionairies like mad. i find the greek border, and i decide to pick on them. the site of my entire military (which by now is large) streaming towards the greek border is encouraging. so the war starts when i slaughter a warrior hanging out just outside a greek city. a HUGE battle ensues, where a legionary makes a leader, and i rename him eisenhour, only for him to get killed. the leader triggers a golden age. everything is going good, i have to quell the resistors in the city i eventually capture with heavy casualities, but its seeming pretty good. so i decide to try to make the switch from depostism to the republic. my civilization was in anarchy for i think 7 or 8 turns. i was gaining 1 gold per turn with depotism, and i was losing 46 gold per turn with the republic. so i decided to go deaper within the greek border, and to attack another city before preceeding to athens. my army is almost back from the city of its creation. one by one, each of my cities start rioting. they are just plain sick of the war. and im losing 20 gold per turn in my golder age, science at 50% and happyness at 20%. i decide i have to abandon my war. i manage to milk out a world map with the greeks though. alexander is still furious at me, but it doesnt matter. im now im 3rd place out of four, only ahead of those greeks i just beat around. we both suffered medium casualties, but he didnt have a big an army as me, so i could have probably progressed farther. currently, all my troops are stationed around the greek border for my next assault. in the mean times, i think ill start relations with egypt. more updates soon to come.

oosh. things were going not to well. i had to disband the majority of my units because i simply could not afford them. i had good relations with the other civilizations, so i wasnt woried. then out of the blue, the egyptians march in. a short a bloody, one sided war was fought. they quickly dominated. they took over a city which i won back. they then took it over again and burnt it to the ground, along with two other small cities. i was desperate, and i knew this could be the end. i contacted the egyptians and begged for a peace treaty. i gave them 80 gold, and 20 gold per turn. but i vowed revenge. my plan is to set the science slider low, and build up a huge military. i will quickly take care of greece, and milk technology after technology out of them for a peace treaty. then i will attack them again. and finish them off.

with a huge military you are better off being a monarchy. In republic you pay for ALL your units, but in monarchy a certain amount of units (related to the amount and size of cities) is free.

if your playing conquests, you get a small support for units in Republic, but for every one over that you pay 2 gold per turn

Here's my advice, I always am ready for becouse I have monarchy as a goverment, 90% research, 10% luxury. All this keeps me ahead of everybody else one way or another that is my suggestion on how you put your slider and hat your goverment for war should be.

I agree with on getting a peace treaty with Egypt. If you hadn't they would wipe you mape, so good choice on that.

If one lesson you learn from this particular game.

Never change government, unless, maybe, your a religious civ; during a Golden Age. You only get 1 per game - 20 turns - a chance to catch up or pull ahead. By going into anarchy you waste so much of that time

a HUGE battle ensues, where a legionary makes a leader, and i rename him eisenhour, only for him to get killed. the leader triggers a golden age. everything is going good, i have to quell the resistors in the city i eventually capture with heavy casualities, but its seeming pretty good. so i decide to try to make the switch from depostism to the republic. my civilization was in anarchy for i think 7 or 8 turns. i was gaining 1 gold per turn with depotism, and i was losing 46 gold per turn with the republic.

Question: When you went to battle against the Greeks. Did you check the F8 screen to see how you fared against them?

Also did you check to see what your Military adviser said F3?

keep em coming. We where all civ noobs once, some of us still are

Cheers

i freaked out, and made a TON of settlers and put cities all over the place.

Freakin is almost never helpful, but it sure makes the game more exciting eh?

One thing you can consider when you are behind on cities is whether having 3 cities could be a better use of settlers, time, and strategy than say 5 or 6. A well-placed city, and a city that fits with the others is very useful!

i was put in a terrible place so i had no rescources. once i aqquire some iron, i start building legionairies like mad. i find the greek border, and i decide to pick on them.

Did they start intimidating you? Is that what you mean by a "terrible place?" Generally, it is best to avoid going to war unless you (a) absolutely must, or (b) know you can win + (c) know you will gain from doing it. The info screens Steve mentioned are critical for helping you decide these questions.

by terrible place i mean a starting place in the map far away from anyone else, and without many rescources.
and yeah, i did check out my military advisor screen, i had a strong army compared to greece, but the war was just seeming to costly. now that i entirely blew off my golden age, i think ill get down to buisness.

so i was preparing for an attack against greece, my entire military was poised on the greek border for attack. i was about to attack, then egypt, out of the blue declares war on me. im very worried, they are just behind my military, so for now they will be pretty much unstopable.

the war against egypt is going well actually. i quickly recaptured two of my cities from the previous egypt war, and they burnt down one of my inconsequential ones. they wil only give me a peace treaty if i give them jerusalem, but i said no. right now i have a galley full of legionars headed towards their unpretected shore, i and i just created a leader. i plan to milk this war for all its worth.

At warlord, you get a production bonus so you should be able to expand faster than the AI. In the early stages try building settlers whenever you can (when the population is high enough). The object is to grab as much land as possible.

i find the greek border, and i decide to pick on them. the site of my entire military (which by now is large) streaming towards the greek border is encouraging.

When starting wars:

Have a clear aim - it is only worth going to war if you will gain something. It could be resources/luxuries or just territory and room to expand.

Choose the victim carefully - depending on your aim this might be an obvious choice. However, you should consider the relative strength and size of the civ - it's usually a bad idea to attack a civ that's significantly bigger than you. You also need to think about their level of development and the units they will have. This includes UU's - it wasn't a particularly good idea to attack the greeks at this stage in the game - they get hoplites with one extra defense instead of spearmen.

Plan the invasion - this includes getting all of the units you'll need in position. Remember to take some units to defend against counter-attackers. At this stage you'll also want to build roads from your territory to theirs to move units in faster.

Be in a war-friendly government - The best are monarchy (early) and facism/communism (late). In republic and democracy you'll have major problems with unit support, war wariness and keeping the population happy as you can't use any units as military police.

Concentrate your force - This is probably the most important thing when fighting the war. Keep your units together in stacks.
currently, all my troops are stationed around the greek border for my next assault.

Make sure you wait 20 turns until the peace treaty becomes permanent otherwise you'll get a huge rep hit.
