Chapter 5 - Ho-hum...

Germania's military had been badly depleted by the war with Poloand. Bismarck had only anticipated having to take Danzig; Taking the capital city of Warsaw in addition had taxed his forces. Even so, he did still have many archers left, and once his alliance with Hungary was up, he could begin arming his young men with swords. There was also another new addition to his army.

"What do you call these things?" Bismarck asked his chief engineer.

"A catapult, sir."

"Catapult? Why do you call it that?"

"The stone is pul't through the air by the force of the lever."

"And the 'cat'..?"

"My cat gave me the idea when she jumped from the top of my hut onto a plank of wood resting atop a log. The food I had placed on the plank went flying, and as it happens, the cat ate it before I could stop her...But it gave me the idea for this."

"I... see. The range is impressive. Even archers wouldn't be able to strike at this range."

"It is not terribly difficult to construct either."

"Indeed? Well, until we have some more iron, we'l make these for our military."

And the buildup in Southern Germany continued.

Thats not to say everything went according to plan. One day in 1990 BC Gandhi called upon Bismarck.

"Peace and brotherhood requires sacrifice, Bismarck. From you."

"Between brothers, whats mine is yours, and what's yours is mine. As such, in demanding what is mine in order to make it yours, you are the one discarding brotherhood, not I, not the German folk. Request denied."

Gandhi left in a huff. A day later, an Indian runner came to the palace and left a message, which one of the servants brought to Bismarck:

"Sire, the Indians have declared war on us!"

Ho-hum, they would have to march halfway around the world to reach Germany's lands. But then they signed an alliance with Egypt. That was worse, but not terrible, Bismarck reflected. They were, after all, on the other side of the Great Mediterranean sea.

Finallythe day came when the alliance between Hungary and Germany ended. By this time Germany had made 19 groups of catapults of many ranges and strengths and they were on a hill overlooking Vienna. Bismarck could now make peace with Poland.

"We haven't much to offer for peace, Bismarck," Jadwiga said. "All we have is our map of the world."

"Fine. Just sign on that dotted line..."

Germany now had a free hand in central Europa once more. The stage was set for Germania's last forseable aggressive war.

Chapter 6 - Unification

At long last Germany could unleash her might upon the Celtic people who had enslaved ethnic Germans for so long. By 1675 BC everything was ready. With the knowlege that all Germans were to be unified at last under a national government, Bismarck became quite giddy...

"Brennus, old man! I have something to say to you!"

"Yes?"

"Haha! Sod you!":p

Thus the war began. The great barage of stones from the catapults made resistance in Vienna practically non-existant. The city was garrisoned immediately. The army now moved to Munich. The Celts did manage to scrape up enough archers for a spoiling attack on Luxembourg, but it was quickly annihilated. Munich was also taken with minimal losses. Bismarck had done it! Germany was unified!

Well, no point in future bloodshed, Bismarck thought. He quickly sent a runner to Brennus to request an audience. He was turned away, however, leaving Bismarck to remark ruefully, "Perhaps I shouldn't have said 'Sod you..."' He figured that if he just gave Brennus time to cool down, he could get peace. Until then, he'd just stay on the defensive.

Finally, Brennus consented to hear what Bismarck had to say for himself.

"Honorable Brennus, please accept my sincere apologies for my insults at the begining of this war."

"Get on with it."

"I would give you peace if you gave us construction."

"Not going to happen."

"No? Come along, we've taken your two most populous and important cities, and can easily take more if we want to."

"We see no need to give the trecherous German people anything that will make them more powerful."

"Haven't we been through this before? Those are German cities, with German folk living in them. But as I can see, you have no intention of giving us what we want without a fight....How does 125 gold sound?"

"Deal."

Germany was still surrounded by enemies, people and kings who would gladly see Germania in ruin. But with each war, the Reich was growing stronger. All the lands of Northern Europa from the Pas-de-Amsterdam to the great port of Riga on the Scandinavian sea payed taxes to Bismarck. His territorial aquisitions quenched, Bismarck went to sleep with a smile on his face that night -- something that was quite rare with him.

I really would love to continue this, I had a lot of fun writing it, and the game was getting more and more interesting as I went along....  But then disaster struck; no, not in the game...  While playing a different game I accidentally saved ober this one, and I didn't have any autosaves.....Dang it.

I suppose I could start a new game, make the same moves I did in this one, and then pick up where I left off?  Now there's something to think about.  I'll consider it, but I already have a lot of games occupying my time at the moment.

Addit:  Your question about German citizens - my saying that a city was full of "German folk" was just roleplay; an excuse for taking them, you may say.  All the citizens in the cities I took were entirely of the ethnicity of their original owner. Hey, I had to do something, or the story would have been boring.

Yeah i sometimes like to find a reason to go to war with the country before i do, simply to make my self feel better about going to war and slaughtering there armies like cattle....which reminds me i nd to kill off the rest of greece.
