Not many people play PTW anymore, you're more likely to find a game with Conquests, and then again, cIV will be out soon, so not many new PBEM's are beginning as they can take some time.
Having said that, if you're looking for a small game (i.e. a small map with not many participants), I'll play. Possibly the easiest for a very small game is two people, if you can coincide times when you're online, then playing over MSN is quicker than e-mails.
Of course, if only playing with 2, you'll want some AI civs aswell, which is a slight advantage to the last player in the turn order as they get to see the moves made by the AI. However, as you're new to civ I'd be more than happy to go first
