I usually keep them, if they aren't badly placed, and then starv them a bit and maybe build a temple. The best way is to conquer the entire civ though.

My choice is usually based on culture. If I'm facing a cultural giant, I'll capture the city... Sell off any improvements... Then disband.

If I'm easily surpassing their culture, I'll usually keep it and use it to build population consuming units like workers and settlers. Eventually I'll put a cultural building in it so the culture radius can expand.

As with any part in civ, there is no best choice that applies to all scenarios. Each situation will be unique and you'll have to evaluate them as you get to them.

can you sell off improvements in the original Civ3 (vanilla)?

or is it only in one of the expansions...

if so, how do you do it?

thanks!!

I beleive you could in all versions, though conquests restricts the sale of a few buildings. In the city screen, click on the improvements listed in the bottom left. It'll come up saying view civedia for this improvement or sell this improvement. Marketplace, bank, habor... Those are my usual sales

hmm..

maybe i'm not playing on a hard enough difficulty then...

seems like whenever i gain a city either by culture flip or through war, the AI hasn't build anything in it...

i usually only get the standard granary/barracks from having completed the Pyramids/Art of War..

I've so far only mastered up to Warlord, and should be upping my difficulty soon..

does the AI imrpove their cities much more on the harder settings?

(thanks!)

The AI does some more improvement at higher levels as it gains cheaper builds, they used production to limit the AI instead of making it smarter, it just builds more... So, it has a better chance of getting the defenders it wants, thus it can then build some buildings..

One round I had a surprise attack from AI invaders who captured a well developed coastal city. I immediatly recaptured it but found I had only a granery and barracks (had SZ and Pyr) and no other improvements. I had always assumed the AI sold off the improvements the 1 day they had the city. Now Im wondering if you "lose" some improvements like culture improvements when capturing a city - the AI lost them when it took the city. Anyone else notice this?

Any cultural structures are immididately razed (really, how could a foriegn temple add to your culture?). Some other structures can be lost (percent chances). Marketplace, grainary, and barracks will be most common, but you'll get harbours, factories, and banks occasionally.

And yes Gargamel, you've hit that on the head. At lower levels the AI tries to produce the same things it would on harder difficulties. Only difference is they produce things quicker on higher levels. On cheiftan, everything costs the AI 140% more (that includes research and food for city growth). Regent is even, deity is 60%. So on Deity they make the same structures as they would on Cheiftan... But it takes the deity AI less than half the time to make them.

How about the pyramids in modern egypt? the parthenon in Greece? Even my little midwest town has an ancient indian burial ground which attracts a number of tourists (and every once in a while we have to kill off the living dead, but its worth it :p ). Also Stonehenge and various Incan/Myan temples found around south american are icons of the area. Heck, even native abandoned towns such as Mesa Verdi (sp?) national park in Arizona is a big tourist attraction. Granted the Taliban bombed out all the ancient buddist temples (before the US bombed them out) so its perhaps a gov decision to incorporate supplanted cultural icons into their own culture.

My point is destroying culture when capuring or even replacing cities isn't a foregone conclusion. In fact, its arguable to say when Rome conquered Greece, the Greecian cuture conqured Rome.

Im going perhaps more into detail than Civ can incorporate... but it would be nice to see in 4.0...

I usually keep them if they are in a good spot. the only time i would burn them is if i think there is a better spot close by and/or what my mood is like at the time.
