The AI gets some definite perks. Had the Germans take back a city recently with a single archer. Poof! There's a spearman in there too next turn. GRRRR!

I don't think this is a bug... if it was large enough, and you had less culture than he did, then he could possibly conscript...

This exact thing happened to me in a recent game. I had an undefended recently captured city, due to the high frequence of cultural flips on Deity level, and it just so happened that the Inca AI had 2 longbow set to enter the city. That was all fine and good, but on my turn there were 2 longbow AND one spearman. I couldn't have been conscript because it was the middle ages AND it was a veteran spearman. I even went back to the auto save to check, and sure enough, no Spearman entered the city.

:gasp:

It happened to me too in a recent game. I conquered a town, which was re-conquered by an AI longbowman. The next turn there was a spearman and a longbowman in the town. The spearman then managed to repell four or five knights that turn too.

I've had this happen twice -- galleys attacking cities directly.

The first time, it was a German galley which attacked and killed the lone warrior defending one of my coastal cities. The city was then undefended, but the galley didn't conquer it, just sailed away.

The second time was yesterday, when a Dutch galley attacked a city with a spearman, then retreated back out to sea when redlined.

Both times were pre-marines and not involving berserkers. The animation was of the galley firing arrows, just as it is in ship-to-ship warfare.

Interestingly, both times were the first attack by an enemy after a surprise declaration of war. I don't know if this is significant.

It doesn't work when the player attempts it.

So, a bug but not a major one. Oh, and no mods either time.

On the magical appearance of additional units in cities -- I think this is because the AI production round occurs after their move but before your next move. So if the AI capture a city, then they have one round of production before you get another go. They can use this to whip a spear or most annoyingly, they can buy a unit (ready next turn), then they get their production round and the unit is actually present in the city when you get to counterattack.

I think this is fixed in Civ4.

Hope so, as this is really annoying, especially on timed games (limited turns I mean) where you only have "X" amount of turns to win the points.

When I first got here, I spent like a week reading everything...I'll assume he missed the date on it   I think that is a record though!  And it was relevant!

I dunno the answer to it myself...I think our new friend's answer would be right...the zerk took it and then the boat sailed in but it was a graphic glitch and made it look different
