It just occured to me that I've never used feudalism as a government (or facism for that matter). I always go from despotism to monarchy to republic/democracy. I always had the the impression that feudalism was a bit like monarchy, but a bit worse. When and how do you use it?

Fascism is good for wars, because you have many military units for free and you suffer from corruption less than in comunism. Feudalism vs. Monarchy allows you forced labor and gives you much more units for free, however you should avoid exceeding the limit because you pay 3 gold instead of 1 for each extra unit. Also you have to be aware of war wearness.
Feudalism is good for a balanced middle ages civ, no radical expansions in plans, however neither disarmament brought by the republic. Monarchy is better when you have not many cities and you want to conquer. You need to arm yourself in c.a 7 units per city for the incoming expansion. Few cities normally means that you didn't have much possibility of expansion earlier and this means that they are larger. In Monarchy lagrer cities give more upkeep, in feud it's the opposite.

It makes no sense if you have a large army to go for republic, because all the attitional gold will get chewed up by the army and you will stay only with the disadvantages(like no police).

Also feudelism has good unit support when you have lots of small cities and monarchy is good when you have lots of cities with a 7+ pop.

I seldom change governments when I play. I usually go from despot to republic. I can't stand the 5 years of anarchy. That differs when using a religious civ, then I bounce around.

And what if you are entering the middle ages, but still have some conquests on your eye in the near future?

We worked out that if you have the correct gameplan in order, squeezing your cities together, and planning for a fuedal war period is a very good stratagy for a continant or pangea game. You rush some cultural buildings (temples) and rush your military whenever your population gets to six... Then you have to have enough targets to use it on or it will begin to cost you... Try the Celts as the UU, and the religious/agricultural traits all fit into the plan quite well. be-line for fuedalism, and have at it.

Also, you CAN NOT beat the zippy workers in Fascism. Workers work 200% normal efficiency! Throw in a industrious trait + replaceable parts and you are at 350% normal effieciency! Amazing!

A long and wandering thread based on inflating military power actually became an attempt by myself and aintmyprob to put together a successful fuedal state.

Fuedal is for large, spread out nations that want to rely on population rushing (wheres my whip?) instead of buying with money. Take a look at that thread, theres even a few save files in there for you to look at as well

Oh come on Seared, it wasn't wandering that far off topic was it? it only discussed six topics, but they blended from one to the next smoothly. I agree that the end was not the beginning, but the means justified the ends...

Thanks guys. Great thread that by the way, I was working alot in july that's probably why I missed it.

I'm currently playing the scandinavians on a large archipelago map. I have mostly towns on grasslands without the possibility to irrigate, so I thought I'd try with feudalism. I changed government a bit late since the great wall triggered the golden age while in despotism. I have a huge treasury and tech lead over most other civs, so I guess I'll have to whip up some berserkers and do some raiding.
