Edit:
Specs: Vikings, emperor, huge map, archipelago, small landmass, random everything else. That should be about it.

Prologue:

The Scandinavian nation had grown and prospered during the 5400 years or so since the founding of the first longhouse in Trondheim. Ships sailed across the oceans in search of new lands, colonies were been founded in all four corners of the world and strange goods were traded from even stranger peoples. Great structures, wonders of the world, had been constructed and Trondheim was undoubtedly the greatest city mankind had seen. But the years were not all laughter and sunshine, conflict was always a part of the Viking way of life, with warlords fighting each other for dominance over the most fertile lands and the richest resources. All that ended when a new figure stepped into play. Algot Blodnäbb did what no one before had achieved. He united the people and convinced all warlords to swear fealty to him. Now was the time to seek blood, wealth and glory beyond the seas, to see if anyone could stand against the might of this new Viking nation.

The Conquest of India:

To secure his position Blodnäbb had to find some way of distracting the other warlords, something to occupy their swords and their minds, other than him. The perfect solution seem to be a small island nation called India. Their warriors consisted mostly of swordsmen, although numerous they where reputed to be poorly trained and badly equipped. There was something else to this small island in the north though, saltpeter, a substance not found in Scandinavia, something that could be used for new and more powerful weapons. Traders had noted this resource, but the backward Indians did not know what to do with it, so there it lied in the ground, unused. "Summon the warlords, it's time for some bloodletting!" bellowed Blodnäbb.

The opportunity to declare war presented itself when the Indians refused to pay tribute. Bangalore, a mining town on the northern tip of the island, where the Indians got iron for their weapons was a natural first choice for a raid. They would be, if possible, even more helpless without a steady supply of iron. The berserker warriors quickly conquered the little town and crusaders rounded up the infidels, while companies of knights secured the countryside. The Indians responded with sending an immense horde of swordsmen to liberate their little town, leaving southern India undefended. After a few skirmishes Blodnäbb decided that a defense of the town would prove pointless and bloody. He would not give it back to the Indiands though. "Tonight Bangalore will burn." Blodnäbb mused. At dawn a bewildered Indian army walked through the ruins to what used to be Bangalore harbor, only to find the Viking warriors hooting and jeering from their ships. Now the undefended and fertile south was ripe for picking. Town after town fell to the invaders, a great army of knights was assembled, epic songs were sung in the honor of those who had departed for the halls of Valhalla and soon entire India was under Viking rule.

During the war a far away country called Persia and neighboring Byzantine had declared war. Persia, while a mighty country in its own right, was too far away to be of much concern. The Byzantines on the other hand where a nuisance, their dromons where busy bombarding the newly conquered town and they even managed to land troops on the Indian shore. Although the troops were quickly dispatched, the dromons were somewhat of a problem. “Maybe we could bloody Persia’s nose while our shipbuilders are busy thinking up ways to counter the dromons” said Bloodnäbb to his warlods. After a few failed raids in northern Persia which only yielded some slaves, poor ones at that, sights were once again set on Byzantine. “Thor blast those dromons! We are proud warriors and won’t be thwarted by a few torch baring would-be-sailors. We have the swords, we have the numbers, Byzantine will go the way of India!” Blodnäbb bellowed. So began the Byzantine wars.

A gripping saga of a bloodthirsty nation. Is the world destined to burn as the Vikings bring on Ragnarok? Or will the ancient Byzantines prove too wily for them...

Stay tuned for the next installment?

The Byzantine wars:

As Blodnäbb was busying himself with preparations for the war, a messenger entered his chambers. “Baron, a fleet of Iroquois warships have been spotted of the northwest coast.” “Well, we’ll just have to wait and see what they have in mind.” Blodnäbb said “According to our treaties they have the right to cross our territories. Maybe they’re on the way to China or Persia, which would be good news indeed.”

A few years later when the Viking armies were poised to attack Byzantium, Iroquois troops landed near Tromso and declared war. Blodnäbb was not to be discouraged, hovever, “This changes nothing!” he exclaimed “Sing your praises to Modi my men; I can already hear the Valkyries screaming.” And sure enough, great battles were fought on both sides of the Scandinavian ocean, great heroes, leaders of men, emerged from the battles. In the south the Iroquois were butchered one and all and beyond the ocean the Byzantines smashed themselves senseless against the walls of newly captured Trebizond, while their dromons bombarded the harbor. It was to no avail, the Viking warriors held on and when reinforcements arrived from the homeland, they were ready put on the offensive. Battles raged, but for the Byzantines it was a hopeless war. City after city fell until the Viking horde was knocking on the gates of mighty Constantinople herself.

The war had not gone unnoticed by the rest of the world however. Ever jealous Persia was first to take the opportunity to declare war against the Scandinavians and promptly began bombarding and raiding our colonies. Although a peace treaty was quickly signed with the Iroquois, a new treachery was brewing. The evil Persians persuaded China to an alliance. This would not have been so terrible were it not for the alliance the Chinese made with our longtime allies the Babylonians. Many were the times when Vikings came to the aid of Babylon in their wars against evil Persia. All this forgotten, in the blink of an eye. To make matters worse the treacherous Babylonians began sowing discord amongst our former allies and trading partners through military alliances against us. This was not serious, since they were weak and backwards peoples, but it did make trade increasingly difficult.

Though few of the conflicts resulted in any battles, the Persians made moves on Scandinavian colonies. Honningsvag off the west coast of Persia was the first to fall. Later the entire island of New Scandinavia, where the famous Risor horses were bread, fell. Luckily Byzantine was now conquered and armies could be dispatched to reclaim the lost colony. The veteran troops from the Byzantine wars quickly defeated the Persian troops and the fields of New Scandinavia were irrigated in their blood. Now was the time for Blodnäbb to deal with the treachery, but there were so many. Who would be the first to feel the wrath of the Viking nation?

Look at all those galleys bombarding Trebizond!

Did the Babylonians attack because they had weakened to the point where they had to agree to anything Persia suggested, to avoid being wiped out by Persia?

Or, perhaps, had your reputation declined to the point where your old alliance was counted to be untrustworthy?

China, not Persia, made the alliance with Babylonia. My reputation should be pretty good, I've only declared war twice and made no sneak attacks. All the others are "known liars and cheats". My military shows as pretty weak compared to most others though, so I'm guessing that's the reason. We'll see who's the weak one in the end, eh?

The Industrial age:

The Byzantine Wars marked the birth of a new era in Viking and indeed human history. New concepts, like nationalism, fascism and communism were introduced spread amongst nations. Blodnäbb saw that there was no going back to feudal times and said “Better to embrace these new ideas and go forward, than to struggle against change and become like the half barbaric countries in the north.” One concept in particular struck a new chord in Blodnäbbs soul, communism. In this he saw, for him and his people, a new calling. The Vikings would unite all workers and free them from the chains of oppression. Of course it would have to be done by blood, but the Vikings were certainly not novices on the battlefield. So began a long and painful revolution, riots swept across the continents and all of Scandinavia was in a state of anarchy. Old warlords tried to hold on to their power and wealth, but in the end they succumbed to the will of the people, to the will of Algot Blodnäbb.

The revolution was followed by a time of enormous growth. Towns grew to cities, cities to metropolises. Universities, hospitals and factories where built and all cities connected through a vast railroad network, these in turn spurred even greater growth in all sectors of society. Scientific research was greatly increased, when a genius of the times Anders Agstrom formulated the universal theory of evolution, which yielded a greater knowledge in the fields of physics and electronics. With this Scandinavia was once again the world leader in science and technology. When breakthroughs with direct military applications where made, Blodnäbb was more than willing to use them in the liberation of the Chinese people. Strangely enough this modern war with its artillery and infantry regiments was initiated by the traditional Viking warriors, the berserkers, who sailed their galleons into the harbor of Tatung and managed to overcome the defending Chinese riflemen and cavalry regiments. The harbor was red with Chinese blood and Blodnäbb knew it was a sign of great things to come.

The Liberation of China:

After Tatung the armies were quickly on the march for Tientsin to the southwest. After a massive artillery bombardment the city quickly fell to the besieging cavalry and infantry. The Chinese then began a major offensive in trying to retake their lost territory. The Chinese cavalry rode in endless waves against Tientsin, but the defenders were well dug in and refused to be routed. Then as quickly as it had begun it was over, the China had depleted their entire offensive force in a desperate attempt to drive back the Viking troops. As the Viking armies once again began advancing on the southern cities, Korea saw an opportunity to increase their domain and also declared war on China. China was in a hopeless situation, they were crushed between the Viking hammer and the Korean anvil. The last resistance came from the islands of Chinan and Kaifeng off the northwest coast of China, but they were hardly in a position to put up much of a fight.

These were troubled times and many wars were being fought around the world. The evil Persians, who were at war with most of the world, finally conquered the Babylonians, while the Sumerians were busy with their conquest of England and Greece. Many military breakthroughs were also made, mostly in the field of naval warfare and mostly by Scandinavia. New Viking ships of war, the fast destroyers and mighty battleships, unmatched by any other nation, ruled the oceans. Shortly after the war new even greater inventions were introduced. Tanks, machines faster than cavalry and more powerful than infantry, rolled out of the factories of Trondheim. And at last it could be said that man had conquered land, sea and air when the newest innovation, bombers, flying machines capable of bombarding the enemy from the air, were introduced to Blodnäbb. “Finally!” he said, “We have the means with which we can purge this world from all evil, once and for all.”
