Why can't I post messages?

We require you to register to post messages and access most of the areas here. Community is nothing withinout its members, and we want you as a member here!

Registration is quick and easy. We don't ask for your name, address, or anything else that's private. All we ask for is an email address (see next FAQ to find out why). You create your username and type in a password and you're on your way!

And don't worry... we won't spam you or sell your email -- we hate spam as much as you! The only email you will receive from us is email that you specifically request!

Why do you need my email address?

We need your email in order to stay in touch with you. Some areas of 1BC allow you to request email updates and without a valid email, we can't send those emails to you.

For instance, when you post a message, you have the option of receiving emails whenever someone replies. Again, without a valid email, we can't send those emails to you.

We do not collect emails for the reason of spamming you -- we do it to prevent spam. We hate spam as much as you!

Consider this scenario: Say someone is out to spam you. They can come here, create a username using your email address, and then subscribe to a bunch of mailings. Had we not verified your email, you might start receiving a bunch of email, and quick! (We have some members who receive 50+ emails a day!)

What is the purpose of a profile?

Your profile tells the world about you!

The information you enter into your profile is available to other members of this community. All the information is completely optional and, if you choose, you can choose to not even fill in your profile.

Can I change my timezone?

Yes! Click Control Panel at the top of any screen and you will see these options listed.

What is a moderator and how do I become one?

Hey, I'm Kid, one of the Moderators of this site.

Welcome to the Civ 3 site at 1 Big Community.

If you are unfamiliar with forums, the role of a Moderator may be a new concept to you.

I'm going to give you a few lines to help you understand how we fit in;

Ok. Most of the Mods present were selected during the early days of the board when the populace was still fairly low. Sean, founder of 1BC, took note of those members who visited regularly and who made an effort to assist other and to offer ideas for enhancing the service. These early contributors were granted Mod status.

Since then the board has grown as has the number of Mods, with some Mods leaving and others being brought on board.

Much of what you see here is a result of suggestions from the Mods. When this site first started it didn't feature nearly as much as it does now.

As time has passed things have settled down a bit with growth and new features appearing at a more measured rate.

The Mods are not much different from the general populace. In fact the majority of most Mod's time is spent posting much the same as anyone else.

Over and above this we have certain admin rights which allow us to move threads to a more appropriate board, delete threads that are considered inappropriate or offensive and take action against members whom have joined purely to disrupt what we all have here.

All of this takes place in the background and is hopefully fairly transparent to the users of this forum. This is intentional, the Mods are here to housekeep not dictate.

We do have our own board, the Inner Sanctum, which we utilise to discuss and develop ideas which have been posted and assess feasability.

Where a requirement for additional Mod's is identified we look for suitable members in that field. In addition we are more than willing to listen to individuals ideas for boards and work with them to develop these ideas and where applicable the board will be created and the initiator of the idea allocated as Mod, if they so wish.

All users of this forum have equal rights to post. All users of this forum have equal chance to gain Mod status.

Some won't want Mod status as it means additional work, which they don't necessarily have time to do. We respect that some users just want to come here to post and have no interest in trolling through threads to see if someone is being generally abusive or whether there is a post in Worldly Chatter that should be in I Need Help....

....but for all of you that do feel you have time and ideas to add please post in Suggestions & Opinions or feel free to send a message to any of us.

Ultimately we are here for you. Our priority is the smooth running and the friendly nature of these boards. Too many forums are merely flame holes and I for one value this place as being a little different from the norm.

Thankfully this hasn't proven too arduous a task as this site has attracted a good crowd who understand the meaning of mutual respect. We do get the odd spanner in the works but these are dealt with swiftly.

For anyone who is wondering - post count makes no odds.... no prizes for having the most posts. Attention is paid to quality not quantity.

Above all we wan't you to enjoy your time here. Hope to see you around.

KiD.
