Like any game you have to adequate your abilities with the rules of the game. It all depends in your way of thinking and style of playing. I had good experiences playing with Romans, Germans and Portuguese. The first two are Militaristic, and for me its goooood...Legionary is nice unit for a early war attacking or being attacked, and the Panzer is awesome because it can move 3 spaces instead of the 2 like normal tanks...and the portuguese, well they are excellent in an island game, but they work well in a world like Earth, two major land masses plus big and small islands...Curragh is very useful! The Portuguese after all were the first worldwide explorers...hehehe...Interesting trading contacts between civs from different continents after you have exchanged some techs and stuff!

I have used the Americans everytime. I always go for the ground war and use modern armor. Haven't lost yet, I always play in conquest mode. However I've only played in the first two difficulties.

I play original Civ 3. My favorite is the Germans.

Panzers = Fourth Reich baby!

One strategy that works for me more often then not (but not always) is to learn Iron Working first.  Then when possible secure iron resources and begin building Swordsman as soon as you possibly can.  Very often, around this time,  another civ will demand a resource or technology.  You refuse and they declare war.  If you developed enough Swordsman before they did you can get a big advantage and often secure an entire continent before other civilizations discover you.

Anyone else find success with this strategy?  Any other strategies that you prefer?
