More to come on this later.

I beat my first duel at Immortal.  Most Civ players will find duels to be very easy up to Monarch, but Emperor and Immortal difficulty can be a good challenge for a more experienced player.

I have not tried the Deity setting yet.  I will try it tonight and post my results in this thread.

With just 1 other Civ and a small map,(duel setting) essentailly with a heavy push towards military you can easily beat the AI, as it thinks about expanding first.  When they expand they split their military towards the new city, leaving their capital open to an early attack.  If you sack any civs capital by 2000BC or earlier, its pretty much a done deal for that civ, hence a win for the duel.

On Emperor levels the AI starts with a worker I have not tested this, but they seem to be able to build tile improvments from the 1st turn.  They also start with an archer, or maybe two.  Im not sure if they get those units regardless of if they have archery tech. or not, also possible they get a free 3rd starting tech.  Im not sure, I will wait to see when someone takes the time to test out the AI advantages at those difficultys.  Post info if you have/know it.

My game results thus far:

Monarch  - Conquest 500BC - Score 38 000
Monarch  - Conquest 40 AD - 28 000

Emperor - Conquest 700 AD - 41 000

Immortal - Conquest 1000 AD - 46 000
(Scores approx)

The score is modified heavily based on how early you win the deul. Stil need to learn more about how a score is calculated.  If you know any of this information please post it for the rest of us.

Immortal AI on the duel setting is impresive and a challenge.  This type of game plays far more like a RTS game, in that aggresion ussually wins the match.  more to come soon.

I know that before the patch, the difficulty setting had no effect on the score, so you could get a very high score by playing a very easy game. However, that's been changed with the patch.

Obviously the duel match is very easy on any setting other then Deity.  Im sure most players here, and in general have found the 1v1 AI so easy to beat.  The challenge is at deity, the AI starts with 5 archers, 1 worker, and a settler (not sure) Well, this is a challenge.  I still have not been able to win at this setting.  Tactics need to be adjusted.  Killing their worker early seems to be one of the best ways of catching up to their development.  If you can pillage a good improvement or two, your even better off.

In any event, my new top score

Immortal duel - Conquest 2600 BC - 61 000(aprox) Inca

Inca get a huge early game advantage.  Maybe too much, in a duel game they are actually overpowered.  I expect this to be changed in the next patch or exp pack.  I wont spoil it for anyone, who may enjoy finding out why on their own.  Obviously their unique unit will dominate anything before bronze working.

From what I can tell at Immortal, the AI starts with 3 archers(no archery) and a worker, + whatever their starter unit is, warrior, or scout.

Duels are clearly made for multi player and the AI is not good at this aspect of the quick 1v1.  It looks like they use the same algorithms as if it was a huge 10 player game.  A duel AI improvement would be welcome but not dire, as these matches are meant for 2 human players.

Post your own scores and experience with the duel matches here.

AI build attack loop

Something I noticed last night on a immortal 1v1 match, if you take a defensive unit or lets say a spearmen into enemy territory, post him on a hill or jungle or forest if possible, and camp him out side the enemy capital, the AI will just loop build and attack your units with their most powerfull military unit.  Lets say you also cut off their horse and bronze/iron.  They will just build archers and when ever they have 3 or 4, they will attack with 1 archer.  The loop starts over and they just keep doing that.  They wont save up and attack with 3 archers or use their city defenders to attack.  After 20 turns or so you should have a well upgraded spearmen or 2 if you started with 2.  I tested it about 4 times with different units.  There is always a chance to loose to an archer with a spearmen.  But with a  good def. bonus its rare, and with 2 units on a hill almost impossible. the AI wont put out a worker, and just loop that same archer build and suicide it to your defender.

Exploit?  maybe, but a win is a win.

Just to clear up the above post

This is tested in early era, when archer is still the main def. unit.  Obviously if the tech. tree has reached Crossbowmen, those guys would cut up your spearmen pretty easy with their 50% bonus

Also being across a river with your def. units will help ensure beating those archers easy.  But unless the AI. has more defenders then they need for their city(3) they will not attack more then once.  Even if your unit is badly wounded and they have 3 perfect archers in the city.  They will build a 4th archer, as soon as he pops, attack with that 4th, leaving the 3 to defend the city.

tested at Immortal difficulty

General Georges (12/14/2005)
tried this on monarch and got my a$$ kicked.  I was the aztec and saladin was nearly tripling my score!!!!!!!

He might have had a great starting spot, on this small a map it is possible to get 3-4 even 5 great resource squares, and they get a big head start at Monarch.  No head start in MP, turn 2 is waiting in your inbox
