I hope someone besides me noticed that the quote "

On a web search, both Patton and Patterson said this.
(Patton seems to ounumber Patterson by about two to one but he is more famous). Maybe they were both just quoting an established dictum.
I've also seen Mao and Von Clausewitz credited with versions of this.
Maybe Sun Tsu, Julius Caesar or Ugg the Warrior first said it
