I dunno if anyone else does this, but I have a pretty set strategy when starting a game. As Gandhi, I do the following...

1. After founding my capital, I research Polytheism and build an extra warrior.

2. After Polytheism, the warrior is usually finished, too. I start building stonehenge and research hunting. Getting Stonehenge early helps get a great prophet quicker and hinduism's holy city.

3. Once hunting is done, I pause stonehenge and build a scout. He is mostly to try to get as many bonuses as possible (free settlers and workers are great!) I then focus my research on all of the worker-related technologies, like agriculture, pottery, or bronze working.

4. After stonehenge is completed, I build a settler and then a worker. I use the extra warrior I made earlier for the new city.

5. At some point, I research priesthood. I then construct the oracle while finishing bronze working. Once both are done, I use the free tech to grab Metal Casting. Getting a forge early in the game REALLY jumps you ahead. I usually use the forge to get the great library made faster than even people with marble. The oracle also helps generate a great prophet if you do not have one already.

6. The whole middle of my game is all about getting Liberalism as fast as possible. I get all technologies leading up to Astronomy, and then I get Liberalism to get Astronomy for free...giving me superiority in building colonies before most can do this.

That's the way I start things off. How does everyone else start the game? What leader are you playing? I feel like I'm stuck in Gandhi syndrome. He's awesome because of Mysticism + Industriousness + Fast Workers. If only he has hunting at the beginning instead of the wheel, he would rule.

That early stonehedge build is questionable as your early military will be seriously gimped

I'm too new playing, right now.  Had the game since Christmas, but have just had time to start playing in the last couple of weeks.  Therefore, I'm still experimenting and trying different things.  In fact I really get to do this a lot, because after I get so far into the game it freezes/crashes and I can't get beyond that point even trying to access the last save! Result:  I get to start over a lot!

One method that has provided good dividends (and I'm playing on the lower levels at the moment) is to build 2-3 Scouts and rush around the map.

Another is to make a beeline for as many of the Religious techs as possible.  I haven't yet got them all, but I did get really close one time and the benefit is no one else founds those religion and you can get the shrines and the money, etc.

Having a good number of the land improvement techs for Workers is a pretty good idea as quick as you can, too.

And with how hard it is to take enemy Cities, its a good bet to get them Catapults as soon as you can!

Really, I think there are a number of ways to play and a number of ways that all have benefits.  I think there are tons more ways than in Civ3.  Because of this, I think a DGame with cIV could be tons more interesting!

After going Oracle -> Metal Casting -> Forge...I usually can output new units fairly quickly. This is what I call, "Military Catch-up Time." Because besides getting the Great Library in a city, my game changes from specific goals, to building-up a military, or if I am alone or on good terms with my one/two neighbors, I go into expansion-mode and build settlers like crazy. But, yes...my military is weak, but only for a short time.

Starting next to an aggressive leader that doesn't like your religious beliefs requires some tweaking, like getting archers and barracks ASAP. And maybe Bronze Working earlier.

Overall, I found this plan to work, but as you said, there is a military weakness early on, so adjust accordingly.

Its a great culture push and you will probally be leading in the score for the first quarter game anyway.  What diffculty are you playing at?  I find that at Prince or higher a weak military leads to an early sword/axeman attack but as you said, some adjustments can be made.

How about this strategy?

Marathon + Prince + Terra + Medium sea level + Ancient + Temperate

Found capital -> build 2 warriors -> worker -> settler.

Capital is guard by the free warrior at start of game.

I use the 2 warriors to steal 2 workers from 2 nearby neighbours.

The 2 warriors might die but I love the free workers more.

More workers and I can chop forest faster.

Then make peace and repeat. Lots of workers I got and 2 weaken neighbours.

Prettu much the same as the original poster. I switch off barbarians so in that context it doesn't matter that I have a weak military to start with. I also go for polytheism and the masonry to get monotheism. That way I get two holy buildings eventually- and it means the opponents don't get them. I find it is also essential to have at least one standing army.

After optics I build a caravel and sail it manually strait around the world to be the first to circumnavigate. The extra movement point is very handy.
