It depends on the situation of course, but most games i try to expand my borders as much as possible. If 'l German i start with a scout so i can find some good spots for a second city pretty fast.
First thing i build is a warrior. when he's done my population is up enough that building a worker->settler doesn't take as long.
Research what best helps you in the begining. if you start off in a spot without animals then you don't need animal husbandry as badly. I do try to get farming ASAP beacause the bigger my towns are the faster i can get techs/expand. i am not too worried about hinduism or jewdaism because i know i'll be first to confusism/taoism/christianity/and usually islam because i focus more on poplation instead of pure religeon techs.
If i'm a Creative leader i don't bother with stonehenge because it's obsolete so soon with calendar. else, i try to get it asap so i can push out my borders. The best early wonder for me is the great library. 2 free scientists is key to being tech advanced in early game. it's best when your first or second city has stone or marble (or both) available so you can crank out the wonders, but it's not a must. I usually build granary->library, but if i need military i'll get a barracks instead of library. of courase i'll keep 2-3 archers in my border towns.
I guess i don't prioritize religeon as much as most of you guys because i know if i'm tech advanced i'll get 2-3 of the later religeons first anyways.
#1 I hate the Aztecs, how do I keep them away from me
#2 How come the other AIs pile on me? I am playing at Noble but without the Aztecs, I think I could win.
Any suggestions?
Sounds bad, but if you have like 3 sources of rice (for example) you can give him one and then still have some to trade with other civs. then when he least expects it, plow through him with some catapults and elephents.
You should also make sure you keep up with your military so he doesn't see you as an easy target. If you know he's near you can get archers in your border towns asap.
The best thing is when an aggressive AI declares war on you a few turns before you were going to declare war on them. You might not be 100% set up, but you are ready to defend your land and then take a couple of their cities in return!
I try to build an adequate military and in my game before this one, I was kicking A but then the Inca and the Germans piled in.
I have backed my level of play down a notch and started a new one- sure enough, the Aztecs are next door and Montezuma just declared war- however, I think I am stronger now and plan to build a huge horse archer army and wipe that sucker out. I will keep you posted.
